Lao is a level-headed person who embraces logic rather than impulse. Everything he does is always calculated and planned so don't expect him to be good at being spontaneous. Though he has a kind heart, people often see him as distant and sometimes or mistake him for a cold person due to his introverted nature. The current hokage has currently moved him into a teaching position to possibly make him more outgoing. He is also very meticulous and a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to his profession, always demanding and aiming for nothing less than 100%. He fights for the mission given to him so don't expect him to risk his life if it would not benefit his goals.

Lao's jutsu and abilities revolves around the ancient Chinese practice of Kan Yu or more commonly known as Feng Shui. There are many factors that affect chakra and Kan Yu utilizes three things to affect the chakra of himself and others; the environment and its arrangement, the harmony of the elements, and the alignment of the heavenly bodies.
Qi Detection - Lao's most basic jutsu. This allows him to see the chakra of his opponent as well as see the state of chakra in the environment. This gives him the ability to single out the best places to be if one wanted to make full use of their chakra as well as places that drain the chakra of the opponent more than the normal rate. He also uses this when he "re-arranges" the battlefield to change the state of chakra to benefit or cripple the chakra of people in that particular place.
Basic elemental ninjutsu - Lao possesses a basic ninjutsu for each element. All of them are genin-level ninjutsu which may cause one to question their effectiveness in battle. However, the true purpose of these ninjutsu is to help Lao in re-arranging the battlefield by shifting the harmony of the elements in a particular place which affects the way chakra reacts to the environment.
Dragon Gate: Eighth Formation - By completely destroying the harmony of the elements in a particular area, Lao can detonate every ounce of chakra in the area resulting in a massive spiritual explosion. The more things that produce chakra in the area, the greater the power of this skill becomes.
Dragon Gate: Fifth Formation - The opposite of his previous jutsu. By attaining perfect elemental balance in an area, Lao can enhance the chakra flow in an area. This allows anyone inside this place to recuperate their chakra faster as well as reduce the cost of chakra used by jutsus.
Way of the Wandering Stars - By using his compass, he can "align" a certain constellation to people that allows him to include or exclude them from the effects of his other jutsus. For example, if he aligns the Phoenix constellation to Teammate A and uses that alignment to exclude him from the effects of his jutsu, Teammate A won't be affected by his Dragon Gate and thus his chakra will not be detonated. He can align up to four constellations which may be a problem when clones are present.
When forced to fight at close range, Lao usually employs Taijutsu that focuses on pushing his opponents away or to areas that will decrease the effectiveness of their chakra. He is also proficient in herbalism so he can provide some first aid but he is certainly not a replacement for a full-pledged medical nin.

History
Lao came from a family of traders hailing from the Silk Country. Like most people from the Silk Country, his parents were traveling merchants which peddled their wares from country to country in order to prosper. His family in particular are one of the main suppliers of steel and metal to Konoha which allowed them some privileges to the shinobi village. His great great grandmother was a Kan Yu practitioner and herbalist who moved to Konoha to start her business there. She fell in love with a shinobi in the village and eventually became a family. Though they are not officially a clan, the Kubikiri family's presence is still well known in Konoha, primarily due to their economic ties to the village as well as their mysterious practice of Kan Yu which has been developed to be incorporated with ninjutsu.
Lao is a 5th generation Kubikiri and the only male of his generation. This has put a lot of pressure on him as he is expected to uphold and honor their family name. Lao was somewhat deprived of a childhood as he was forced to master the ways of Kan Yu and train to become a ninja at a very tender age. It paid off though as he was able to become a jounin by the age of 20. The hokage was impressed by his skill and proficiency as a ninja but worried that it may be wasted since he was socially inept. In order to remedy this, the hokage appointed him to a teaching position and become a squad leader to a team of promising genins. Determined to fulfill his mission, Lao steps up to the challenge and hopes to accomplish the task at hand.

Lao stands at about 5'9" and wears the standard jounin outfit on missions. When not working though, he can be seen wearing clothes that are practical renditions of his country's national clothing. His primary tool is his Luopan, a special compass used by Kan Yu practitioners. Aside from using it to aid his divinations, Lao also uses his Luopan as a weapon, hurling it to enemies like a boomerang. It is strong and heavy enough to cause some serious damage if hit.
