a character in “Naughty Children Society”, as played by Cookies Need Love

Description

Name:
Mary Dunes

Age:
Ten

Appearance:
Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary

Personality:
Mary is a mostly quiet child. She rarely throws tantrums, and isn't one for screaming or talking a lot. For Mary it's actually a good thing she's so quiet because she's also very curious. Mary loves to find things out and is often found listening at keyholes. She doesn't like not knowing something and will persist until she can find out what's happening. Even if she's yelled at or told to leave it alone Mary refuses and just keeps poking her nose where it should not go. So Mary usually knows a lot of things that she shouldn't. Things like gossip about the neighbors which she then repeats, proud of her information. Mary doesn't really see the difference between thing that can be said in front of other people and things that cannot be said in front of other people, so she's often spouting out things that will embarrass everyone involved.
Mary is also a very brave kid. Even though she gets scared by lots of things, Mary will just keep going. Like the basement under her house! Mary was always terrified of that basement but whenever her mother needed something from down there, Mary would go. Even if she comeback upstairs crying, Mary never came back without whatever her mother needed. Mary doesn't like dark places and this contributes to her love of fire. Mary absolutely delights in flame and matches. She had many stashes around her house of matches so that she could light them and look at them. Her parents never approved of this, but Mary found she couldn't resist lighting up a match or a candle. It chased away the darkness and it looked so pretty...

How were you captured:
Mary was captured by the black van and squad.

Why were you captured:
Mary sat with her arms wrapped around her knees, crouched in the far back of the closet. She was as squished against the wall as she could be. Her breath was heaving heavily through her throat despite her attempts to slow it. She let out an almost silent squeak and tried to push back further when she heard voices outside the closet door.

"Are you sure it was Mary?" That was her mother's voice. She sounded sad and tired. Mary wondered if that was her fault, but it couldn't be. Her mother was always so happy when Mary was around! Besides, she was always tired.

"Yes, ma'am. The sensor is never wrong." This voice was gruff and apologetic. It was scary, and Mary didn't like that it was talking about her. It sounded like a voice that should be talking about really bad things. Mary wasn't a really bad thing, was she?

"She knew, Lisa. We told her three strikes." Her dad now, talking to mommy. Mary did know about the three strikes. She wasn't dumb, but Mary also knew she still had one strike left. The first had been at the school, when she'd nearly set the principal on fire. Just now she'd only struck one match, but the sensor had caught it. So why were the scary people and the scary van here? Mary knew what happened to kids who got in the van. She'd seen them climb in and never climb out again. Mary didn't want to disappear...

"I know, Charles. The school, and then the lawyer's office, and now this... Maybe she'll be better off." Mary's eyes widened. How could she have forgotten the lawyer's office? When she and mommy had stopped by the hair salon, Mary had wandered to the lawyer's office next door and listened to some things she hadn't nearly understood. Three strikes. This was her third strike and now the scary people were going to take her away and she'd never see mommy or daddy before.

"That's right, Mr. and Mrs. Dunes. Let's get Mary now." Mary shivered at the gruff voice. She wanted mommy to say no. She wanted daddy to kick him out. She didn't want to go in the black van. She wanted to stay right here in the old house with her parents. Mommy's tummy had grown bigger and she'd told Mary that meant that Mary was going to be a big sister soon. Mary wanted to be a big sister, but how could she in the black van with the scary men? The door to the closet began to creak open and Mary peered forward as light appeared. She saw her father holding out his arms. Mary scrambled to her feet and ran to him, throwing herself into his arms. He lifted her up and squeezed her tight and for a moment Mary felt safe. There was no way daddy would let the scary people take her! He would tell them to go away, and Mary would be a good girl this time. She'd stop lighting fires abd listening at keyholes and they'd all be happy. Together. But then Mary felt daddy loosen his group and different arms take her up. Thicker, musclier arms that held her too right.

"No! Please, daddy, don't let them take me!" Mary cried, struggling helplessly against the strong grip. Her eyes landed on mommy, who was holding her stomach and crying silently. "Mommy! Please, mommy. I'll be good. I promise, I'll be good. I won't break the rules anymore and I'll help put around the house and I'll eat all my vegetables. Mommy... Daddy... Please, please let me stay." Mary could feel tears welling up in her eyes as she fought against the man holding her, trying to pull away from him. He held her back easily and began to turn away. Mary twisted in her arms so she could continue watching her parents as daddy wrapped mommy in a hug. Mary reached out a pleading hand but neither of them were looking at her anymore. She heard the door swing open and felt the touch of fresh air.

"Mommy! Daddy!" Mary screamed as the door closed. Salty drops spilled down her cheeks even as she fell silent.

"That was easy." It was a new voice. Less gruff then the man holding her.

"Yeah. Usually need all of us," another voice joined in. A girl this time. Although Mary could understand the individual words, as a whole they were meaningless to her. What did it matter anyway? Mommy and daddy were gone, and Mary was going in the scary black van. She closed her eyes and continued to let the tears fall silently, even as she was tossed unceremoniously into the back of the van and roughly strapped in. She would never see her little sibling...

So begins...
