"Smile, sunshine; it's not worth being sad here."
Jared is that evidently carefree, easygoing leader type. He has an excellent sense of humor and utilizes it whenever he deems necessary. That lovely little smile of his always seems to infect other people and bring their spirits up a little bit no matter how dark the place they're in may be. It's pretty obvious that he loves cheering people up. If you don't talk, he will talk for you until you give in and say something.
He seems to know quite a bit about Fulgor, but the majority of his knowledge comes from Neil. Speaking of Neil, Jared listens to his every word without question and generally won't do anything important without his approval.
His words are often very poetic, making clear his love of music. It's not uncommon for him to weave song lyrics into casual conversations and think nothing of it. Sometimes you can catch him humming tunes to himself or even singing quietly.
When he isn't around others or is just plain upset for whatever reason, however, his persona turns around completely; the smile departs or else becomes painfully artificial and he gets unnaturally quiet. If anyone asks him what's wrong, he'll shrug it off and say it's nothing but he's a pretty terrible liar. Everyone is entitled to their secrets, though, so it's best to leave him alone about why he's so down.
It takes a lot to make him dislike you, and he generally tries his best to treat everyone as equals. Him being nice can sometimes be mistaken for affection of the romantic variety (and sometimes it is) but he's pretty open about it if he likes you, so you generally aren't left guessing.
Why on Earth he committed suicide is anyone's guess-- he seems like a remarkably happy person-- but then again, he always insists to leave the past behind. That's probably of some significance.
Oh and, whatever you do, don't make him mad.
Good luck finding much of this out at all, but Jared's dad was an infamous serial killer. That alone is an obvious cause for a whole plethora of problems, and it doesn't really help that his psycho father encouraged him to help brutally slaughter/disembowel people, treating such "field trips" as great privileges. He resisted whenever he could, but there were those few occasions when Daddy forced him to watch and/or participate in his gruesome little games.
That kind of thing messes you up, and Jared may have gotten to the point where he snapped and started killing people too if not for the day that, about three weeks before his eleventh birthday, his dad got gunned down on the street. That was a welcome freedom until his mom got severely depressed and turned to alcohol to dull the pain-- her husband may have been a monster, but that didn't mean she didn't love him.
Jared had thought that things would be really different with his dad gone and all, but it was actually worse in its own way. Sure, he wasn't subjected to grueling psychological torture anymore, but now he had to deal with the fact that his mom didn't seem to know he existed anymore. Him being the son of a serial killer and all made his social life virtually nonexistent seeing as everyone thought he was going to try and eat them or something, so he basically felt like he was invisible. He turned to pain-- specifically from cutting his arms with knives and razors-- to make him feel real again. He was twelve at the time.
Two years later, he was entering his freshman year of high school. Nothing had changed. One day, finally unable to take it anymore, he made his way up to the roof of the apartment building he and his mom lived in and jumped off without even leaving a note. No one cared anyways.
When he woke up, he was lying on a strange street with a slightly older boy leaning over him. His name was Neil, and he was Jared's first genuine friend since before everyone knew about his dad. Together, the two of them managed to survive in Fulgor for the past three years, during which Jared became the (more) vibrant soul he is today.
