Akira is an asshole. That is the easiest way to explain it. But, to add more description to this lets delve into Akira as a person, shall we? Akira hates sympathy, he has gone through half his life having to deal with people saying that they feel sorry for him and there was something that they wish they could do to help his condition. Now, one would believe that this would make someone depressed, not resentful. However he sees all this sympathy is people looking down on him. Hes always wanted to be the person that people looked up to, this was especially attributed towards his little brother who now has to help Akira with daily tasks.
This constant down-pour of sympathy leads Akira to be a depressed person filled with hate towards those that live life freely, able to walk and run as they see fit. They take this simple part of life for granted and when he sees this he can't help but feel jealousy and endless hate towards them. This is what drives Akira to be the person he is in-game, it is what drives his determination to kill players without feeling remorse.

Born in San Francisco Akira was a most likely born to be a very social person. If fate didn't have its way he would have been the one hosting parties at his parents house and the one that everyone would know. He would have grown up with a carefree life not knowing what it was like to have to lose something, and by the time he lost something...it was far too late for him to realize what life was really about.
Tragedy had struck Akira when he was merely just a child, a ten year old child robbed of his innocence within a moments notice. He was the victim of a T-Bone car accident on the receiving end. He was sitting in the front seat whilst his younger brother was in the back. The car hit the passenger side of his car and crushed half the car in. Akira was lucky to be alive, however when he woke up he found he was unable to move his legs. He then watched as everyone else pitied him and said they wish he could walk again.
His parents, being technology-illiterate bought him the game Sword Art Online, they knew that it was the popular game at the time but knew nothing of how virtual reality worked so they knew not that Akira wouldn't be able to use his legs...or so logic had foretold. Akira put on the Virtual Gear and entered Sword Art Online, only to realize that he could actually stand. He didn't need to use a wheelchair, of course it took a bit of practice but he could finally walk again! He went on to log-out to tell his parents of his new-found joy but then realized he couldn't log out. That was when everyone was told of each others fate, they were stuck until the 100th floor was conquered. While everyone cried he simply stood with a smirk on his face. He sought out to kill any players that tried to reach the 100th floor as Sword Art Online was his new improved life.
