An 18-year-old oddball, goofy, yet undeniably charming scientist aboard the Pioneer I, Zander O'Roarke is a brainiac who completely belongs in the Pioneer Program.
In general, Zander is just fun to be around. He is quirky and comical, charming and just plain likeable. Heās yet to meet someone who truly despises him. Though he does have his moments, he really is a good guy and has no longing to break any rules, but heās by no means a goody-two-shoe. And amidst being kind and trying to bring out the best in others, it isnāt completely uncommon for Zander to dislike someone based on their attitude, or even just his own instincts; heās kind, not fake. He loves science and math and is often caught working through chemistry problems in his spare time. Fun-loving and light-hearted though he is, his serious side shows through to those who push through to get to know him; who he really is. Though he takes relationships lightly, he takes love extremely seriously. He respects women, but that doesnāt keep him from being a man.
The only personal items Zander brought with him are his favorite 0.5 lead mechanical pencil, extra lead, and a thick pad of yellow lined paper for scientific equations.
Zander OāRoarke was born to an American couple, a surgeon and a CEO, living in Beijing, China. He was their only child and was practically raised by his Chinese nanny, his parents having hardly been around, kept away by their careers. It was the strong Chinese culture that his nanny enveloped him in that instilled in him the morals of being good and kind, and it was this also that put a wedge between himself and his peers when his parents decided to move back to the United States when he was 12. He felt lost in America. And he was severed from the only person who ever truly loved him; his nanny. He felt nothing like the hard-edged Americans in the intensely polluted city of Chicago. But slowly, after the culture shock and the anger and pain that came from the lost of a loved one and his home had time to dissipate, Zander realized that he was wrong about Americans. He realized they could be just as amiable, they just wore thicker shells, and he had to pierce through that exterior with the friendliness he had learned from the time of being a toddler. However, in the meantime, with his parents always gone and always being left unsupervised, Zander had more than enough time to himself. He developed a hobby. Chemistry. In school, he had the some of the highest marks in his class. When the Pioneer Program came out, his school counselor advised him to look into it. He realized he was a perfect fit for the program, and leapt for the opportunity. He would be doing what he loved and would even be around people from China. Zander had found his lifeās goal and launched on the Pioneer I at age 18. He felt a completion he had never felt before. Only he wasnāt completeā¦the only thing missing from his life was love. His parents never showed any amount of cordiality toward him. He didnāt even know if they liked each other. His vow to himself was that one day he would find someone and love them. Love them the best he could, no matter what. Though he's in no rush for this to happen. He's young, he has time yet to have fun and just...be young.
