Name:
Barnabas Vine

Nicknames:
Chief, Buddy, Navigator

Age:
23

Role:
Waterbird Navigator

Appearance:
Barnabas is quite the handsome man, with neatly kept brown hair and green eyes that look like emeralds. Barnabas is known to like to be very extravagant, always wearing large cloaks and showy weapons. He is pretty tall, standing at about 6' and has a very lanky build. He's not very muscular, as you can tell by his baggy sleeves on his shirts. With pierced ears and his capes, he looks somewhat like a Pirate, but he is much to respectable to become one. He has quite tan skin due to being outside often. He has quite a fashion sense also, and is also the Waterbird's tailor, but his directional sense is much stronger.

Personality:
Barnabas is so charming you can't help but wonder if he is just a fake. He has many manners and is always polite, unless he has a reason to hate your guts. An outspoken man, he'd rather stay quiet until asked to speak. He is great at plotting, but will never do his own dirty work, for he is quite too respectable for this. Barnabas is a narcissist, for he believes he is better than everyone else, especially low down pirates. Besides this, Barnabas can easily persuade you over to his side without needing reason. He is a smooth talker and can make you believe anything. He can be kind and caring when he deems you are deserving of his precious time.

Likes:
Himself, His Family and Friends, Fashion, Elegance, Navigating, Sailing, The Sea, Adventure, Spooky Stories, Danger, Reading, Mapping

Dislikes:
Filthy Pirates!, Pain, Having blood on his hands, Animals, Rude or Loud people, Being disturbed

Skills:
Direction, Fashion, Persuasion, Saying wise things, Charming people, Mapping

Weaknesses:
His ego, Loud noises, His soft spot for children, His inability to fight, His scheming self

Fears:
His only fear is fear itself... that and being found out for what a jerk he really is.

History:
Barnabas was born in a small European village. His father was the mayor, but was hanged for an embezzlement scheme when Barnabas was three. Barnabas grew up a rich and spoiled boy, nannies always taking care of him. His mother was sickly ever since she had been a child and was bedridden after giving birth to her second son, Barnabas's younger brother who came along after his father was killed. His nannies always cared for his younger brother more, and Barnabas was left to defend for himself. Wanting attention, he claimed the habit of being over extravagant.

When Barnabas was sixteen, and he had moved out of the house by this time, his mother finally passed away, making him the heir in the Vine family and he got most of their fortune. Barnabas quickly abandoned his younger brother, taking all of their fortune for himself. Barnabas' brother took to stealing and was hanged, just like his father. Barnabas felt no guilt. Barnabas quickly became a fisherman, and once got lost at sea on accident with two other fishermen, but was the one who navigated their way back. Barnabas was soon regarded as one of the best navigators in the village and was a shoo-in for getting the job as the navigator on the Waterbird. He is now engaged to a woman back at the village, but this doesn't stop him from being his charming self to other women.

Other:
Spontaneous Combustion

Two glowing red eyes opened to another bright morning. The boat swayed back and forth, but a Pirate Captain should be used to this. Captain Curry stood, rubbing his eyes, one of which almost swollen shut. He let out a yawn as he got himself ready, putting on his captain's uniform, trousers, a white button up shirt, and a large overcoat. He attached his belt, which had a hilt for his sword and pistol. Lastly, he placed a comically large hat on his head. Stepping outside of his quarters, he let the breeze hit him, taking in the smell of salt water that stained the air. Yes, this was a mighty fine day for an execution.

Captain Curry began to trek through his boat, watching as men hurried to their positioned. They would hang the captives, for throwing them in the ocean would not work as well due to the species of some of them. Mermaids. He could sell them, for quite a price too, but the Englishmen had killed their young crew members. They were only trading that price.

Captain Curry looked overboard, peering at the water which seemed a green hue. It wasn't a dirty green, for it was actually quite pretty. The Captain took it as a good omen. He hurried to the kitchen, grabbing a bit of moldy bread, which he ate as if it was as clean as a whistle. He nodded to the cooks as he left. Thinking about the hanging that was about to take place didn't upset his appetite in the slightest. He even let out a deep bellowing laugh that almost made him sound like Saint Nicholas. But Captain Curry was far from a kind, jolly fellow.

"Are we ready?" the Captain asked some of the passing boys. He decided to be more specified. "For the execution, I mean, are we ready?"

Anthony looked up at his boat, the one he was able to get for a crate of rice, and sighed. This was not what he wished to use the boat for originally, but he wanted to save these people. Plus, no one else was willing to risk their ships.

Anthony turned to his navigator, "Barnabas! Are we ready yet? We need to leave and we need to leave now!" Anthony rubbed his temples in frustration. It was going to be a pain to get these people back, but he was not going to let them die.

"Everyone! Get on the ship we're leaving soon!" He barked to his new sailors before turning on his heal and going to the center of the boat to await his sailors.

Aster Flichen

Aster turned to his captain once he spoke. 'Darn... Why do I always get caught when he wants to talk to some random person."
He looked at the boys next to him and realized they weren't speaking up out of slight fear.

Aster sighed, "We don't have enough rope to hang them all at once, Captain, only about... two at a time at most. And people right now are currently tying the nooses." He knew the captain would not be happy about this, but it was better known now than later.

He turned to Caleb, hoping he'd help him calm the Captain once he exploded. "Help..." He whispered out the side of his mouth. Caleb worked with the Captain more than himself. He was usually inside his own little work space waiting for idiots who got hurt to come in.

Al heard her captain shout "Everyone! Get on the ship we're leaving soon!" She ran with her boyish grin and stood front and center with the rest of the men. She saw a few eyes widen at her being a girl. She slightly bounced on her toes in excitement she thought to herself 'I should be able to control my temper as long as no one called me miss or lady' I watched our captain. He looked to be about 29 or 30. He hadn't noticed me yet, that was a good thing. So far everything had ran smoothly.

Anthony, not getting a response from Barnabas, realized the man wasn't anywhere near him when he asked the question. 'I'll just secure it with him later.' Anthony thought as he watched people gather around him.

"I welcome you all and thank you for being willing to risk your lives for others." Anthony started, "I am Captain Anthony Shepard. I expect all of you, no matter of size, speed," He glance over and notice a girl. He raised an eyebrow and continued, "Or even gender; I will expect all of you to to perform at your best ability. I expect this crew to work as a team, but I also want you to work like adults. I can not come fix every argument you have with one another.

If any of you think this is going to be easy or simple, get off now. We are going to rescue lives from a terrible man. I know many of you are angry at this fact since some of the people who were taken are close family or friends. But know, we are going to bring them back. If not, I will die trying. I would die for them, and I would die for you all if needed."

He stopped for a moment, "And I hope I am able to trust my life in your hands. But I hope more, that you can trust your lives in my hands. I will try my hardest to make sure everybody comes out of this alive. And if you die, I will personally make sure you were regarded as a hero.

And with that: I welcome you to my crew on the Waterbird and look forward to working with you~" When he finished, Anthony bowed his head slightly and gave a small smile to his new crew members.

((We seriously need more crew members on this ship XD))

The captain took the outstretched and and gave it a firm shake. "Barnabas. You're late." Anthony said, "Anyways, as long as you are able to point us in the right directions it's fine."

Anthony took out his notebook and looked through his list of crew members; it seemed Barnabas was the last person they needed to leave. "Alright. Lift the anchor! We leave!" Anthony called out to whoever was at the anchor. The closest one too it seemed to be the girl he saw earlier. "Lift it, girl!"

Aster Flichen

It took all that he could for Aster not to yell, "Don't shoot the messenger!" at the Captain. But he and everyone else knew that's be a death wish. And the fact that his only help was that of a girl's bothered him even more.

When the Captain barked another order, he ignored it and went back down to his quarters/pharmacy/death room. It seemed that Curry was in an angry mood today, which meant that there would be many visits down there today.
"I hate my job." Aster grumbled, smacking his head down onto his desk.
He actually had a really demanding job. Since they lived in a terrible environment, any sort of cut or scratch could become deadly. So he he had to act as a nursemaid for every single person who got a freaking boo-boo. And he couldn't refuse them either since that could bring the wrath of Curry on him.

Rosemary sat in her cage for a little while, no answer coming from the man, until he stepped out of the room and looked at her, discombobulated. "Was that you, girl?" he asked. She smirked. No, it was the Captain.

"Yes, it was me," she said, speaking a tad bit louder than she had before. "And, if I was to quiet before- sorry about the mumbles, I wasn't really expecting an answer- I asked when you all plan to kill me and whatever others you have captive on board." Although it was a bold thing to say, she didn't say it very boldly, sounding timid as she spoke. She crossed her arms as if to seal her small streak of courage. "You know, I am a Historian. I could be of more use to you all alive than I would be dead. I wonder how much you all know about the world's civilizations. I've dedicated at least four years to learning," she said, sounding quite proud of herself as she spoke in her British accent. "Although that isn't your call, is it? It's your Captain's and by what I hear through the floorboards, from gossiping crew members, he isn't a great man to try and convince." Rosemary sighed. It seemed hopeless. Why was she debating this with a doctor, crew member, or whatever he was?

"You're late."

Barnabas frowned. The Captain quickly lost interest in him, so he figured it was time to see where he worked. He quickly walked through the ship, admiring the work put into it, but it was no great ship. He sighed, keeping up his search, almost giving up until he saw a small crate by the wheel full of maps. He eagerly pulled one out. A map of the known world- brilliant! Barnabas couldn't hide his smile. He was eager to show off his skills to the whole village. He was already known as one of the best navigators in their small town, but if he navigated the rescue mission against Pirates and danger, who knows how famous he could become! Plus, navigating gave Barnabas a certain happy feeling that made him sure that he loved direction.

He quickly sat down on the crate and observed the map. The Pirates were obviously not from anywhere around here, and you'd probably want to travel by land if from Asia, so they must be down, heading somewhere around Africa. Southwest. That was the direction. Great. "Now I've just got to find the bloody pilot."

Weston Kale

A loud huffing sound, similar to that of a dog about keel over and die. Weston trudged up the gangway plank with an sheepish expression on his face as he gently maneuvered his way around the busy deck..narrowly avoiding the death glares directed at his back by less than patient crew members. His expression was coached into that of a strained smile as he approached who believed to be the navigator of the Waterbird who appeared to be busy pouring over a map of some sort.

"Please excuse me for being late..I had to make one final stop...sir" Weston apologized quickly, inclining his head in a respectful manner. His calm expression turned into that of increasing anger as he was ran into by a clumsy sailor carrying a heavy load. His hands seemed to tighten even more around a black case containing his most prized material good...his beautiful, oak violin with an arabian horsetail bow. The violin was a friend to him in the toughest of times, it had always been there for him. Turning his attention to the navigator he asked in a quiet voice "Please tell I am not on duty for physical labor yet...I would hate to have one these..men step on this..". Carefully setting down the case and clicking open the silver clasps with a smile on his face. The violin lay in the velvet case shining like the sun as it had just been freshly polished and restrung by the local musician of the small town.

Gently closing the clasps once more Vincent gave the navigator a slight smile before stating "I have not introduced myself yet, I am Weston Kale, the present..hopefully still employed pilot of this well-crafted ship. I promise that I will not be tardy whilst manning this ship I assure you on that of my fiancé's heart..". His words trailed off as he realized the slip of words..before pondering ~Do I still even have her as my fiancé?~...

In the middle of Barnabas' map plotting, a boy came up and began stuttering about how he was sorry he was late, and how he wished he wasn't fired, his fiance's heart, blah blah blah. Barnabas finally put down the maps and looked him in the eye. "Look, I am the navigator, not the Captain. It is not my responsibility to throw you overboard. I don't think you'll be doing any physical labor, as we need you to steer the ship," Barnabas said in his charming voice, agrivation peaking through. He had no patience for Stuttering Stanley's ((Holy crap... Bout died there laughing.... I love the Sixth Sense...)) who wished to apologize for everything they said or did.

"You may want to take note, we must head Southwest, for I believe the Pirates are from that area. Hah, not many people have dared to go there. No land masses that way, just maybe the edge of the world. How exciting!" he said, half enthusiastically, half sarcastically. He was fine with journeying into no-man's-land, as long as he came back in one piece. If he died, he wouldn't be quite happy.

"I'll tell you which way to go when we take off, but until then, hang tight. Just, please tell me that you've actually piloted a ship before. If you wreck, I doubt anyone will be very happy." Barnabas crossed his arms, waiting for the man's answer.

"Once the Cabin Boy finished with the nooses? Well, I hope he takes quite a while with that. I'd enjoy for my eyeballs to stay in my head just a little while longer." She tried to laugh at her remark, but it sounded more fearful than funny, which was not how she had intended it to be. She felt almost sick to her stomach.

He continued, seeming quite confused with the fact she was a historian. "Not officially, almost, but I consider myself one, yes, I've been studying in history, becoming an apprentice under Librarians and other Historians for a while now. And to think I was almost actually almost officially Historian Turner. What a pity I'm being killed now." The boy still looked confused. "What, you've never heard of female historian? Wherever your from, it must be a lot different than my little village."

She wanted to add 'we don't kill innocent people', but she tried to view it from their point of view. They had lost two crew members... they thought they were doing what's right. But they had been the ones who raided anyway. It wasn't Rosemary's fault that their crew members had been hanged.

Anthony reached down and took the knife away from Al's hand, "I'll be taking this until you learn not to act first with violence. We just talked about this, Al." He scolded the small girl before turning to the man.

"And it was my choice to allow her here. You should not question what a captain chooses. Now. I am sick of playing a housewife who can not get her children to behave! Both of you will be mopping the deck this night!"

And with that, the angry captain placed the knife in his empty holster for his own dagger (he left it in his quarters) and went to go find his navigator and/or pilot. He'd noticed the signs of a storm brewing upon the horizon and did not wish to get stuck in it. Wondering if they'd be able to avoid it.

The storm arrived. We couldn't avoid it, it was to big. All the sailors sprung to action I hoisted the sails and threw water off the boat. I saw the captain and two others watch us. I huffed out a breath and kept working. Waves splashed over the boat making it rock violently in the sea, the skies poured down rain, the sea was black and deadly. A crate was blocking the way for me I called over to a sailor for help and he came over we moved the crate and he went back to his storm post. A huge wave crashed onto the boat soaking me wet It's icy fingers grabbed my ankle pulling me off the boat. I screamed. I was close to the water and I found a rope to grab to hold onto, I gripped the rope for dear life. It was literally my life line. "HELP!!!" I screamed, it was cut off by my body being plunged into the water I came up again and gasped for breath. I was not going to let the sea take my life.

He heard the mermaid girl say something but decided to pay his full attention to the Captain. "I was wonder if you were injured in any way, if any of the crew was injured (though you already answered this), and if you would allow me to fix the prisoners up. It seems, that one of them has a shard sticking out of her ribs. Not sure if you rather have them fixed up from a hanging or just let them die now."

While he was speaking her started to work on the girl/boy's legs, taking tweezers and pulling the smaller pieces of wood before pulling out the bigger ones with his fingers. "I get the feeling that more people got hurt down here than up there." He said to the captain.

Anthony Shepard

When Anthony saw one of his members fall over board, it seemed to have been Foster, he let out an annoyed sigh. "Alright, I'll get him." He said before shedding his shirt and weapons. He grabbed a life line, tied it to a sturdy board and himself, before jumping into the water after his fallen ship mate.

Pushing against the tough waves, he was finally able to reach the poor male. He untied the rope from himself and tied it around the almost sunken male. "I swear to god. If someone doesn't pull us up, I'll throw you overboard and not save you!" He yelled up at his crew. He didn't care who pulled them in, as long as someone did it.

Barnabas waited for the man to respond, but chaos struck as on of the crew fell off of the ship. Barnabas rolled his eyes, but the Captain actually went after the idiot who had managed to throw himself overboard! Barnabas scoffed, but heard the Captain cry out for someone to pull him out. No one responded. Barnabas scoffed. Why did he always get stuck with these jobs? Barnabas stood up and strutted over to the rope that the Captain had tied himself to. He heaved, but Barnabas wasn't the strongest guy in the world. He gasped as he slid at the weight, landing on his bum. He was a Navigator, not a body builder!

"How much do you lads weigh?!" Barnabas explained as he pulled himself up. He let out a gasp and heaved again, the two coming up just a bit. Barnabas climbed on top of the rope that was already stretched as far as it could, and placing his feet on it, began to jump, finally his weight causing it to sink. He sat down from there and began to heave until finally the Captain and the crew member's heads popped up. He let out an annoyed yet tired gasp as he stood up and walked back to him maps, collapsing onto the crate he had been sitting on earlier.

Rosemary had been started when she felt the waves collapse onto the boat. She had gripped the bars to her cell and held on for dear life, but her glasses had been whipped away from her and were sent under the bars, out of her reach. The waves had finally slowed down, but she was still completely blind without her glasses, the whole world had gone fuzzy. Blindly crawling around her cage, she ran into a pile of hay and collapsed onto it. She didn't think she was hurt, but it might have been helpful if she could see to check herself for injuries. She closed her eyes, a headache beginning to settle in.

Suddenly, she heard someone walk by the cells and into the doctors office across the hall. By the way he spoke, referring to "his men", Rose knew it was the Captain. She payed close attention. The doctor asked permission to check the prisoners for injuries.

"Fine," the Captain said to Rose's surprise. "I don't think we'll be able to hang them when our cabin boy just lost most of the rope, so better not let our hostages die without a proper execution." Rosemary felt hope finally flutter back into her... now if she could only find her glasses.

Anthony was the girl to get on board and pulled up the other man next. "What on earth were you thinking!" He yelled at his first mate, "Never mind, it wasn't your fault..."

"Everybody, get inside the ship before another one of you falls overboard!" Anthony yelled before grabbing his shirt and weapons and heading for the inside of the ship. "We'll wait the storm out." He said in a softer voice.

Aster Flichen

After Aster was finished patching up the girl he tapped the side of the table as a sign he was done. "Alright, anybody else beside the captives injured?!" He called out to the rest of the crew members. "If you are you have about 10 seconds to get in here!"

Aster walked out of his office and looked around at everybody, He glanced down at the captives and saw the the historian's glasses had fallen onto the ground. He picked up the round items and placed them in front of the girl who was wandering around her little area looking for them. "Here." He muttered, waiting for one of the crew to speak up.
