Description

Image
Name: Jade Ryder.
Nick Name: Just Jade.
Age: Twenty-four.
Gender: Female.
Personality: Jade is an outgoing woman, fun loving and always trying to look at the brighter side of life. Though she isn't bubbly, hyper or anything like that...she's just content and joyful. Her grandfather taught her that if she makes an effort to be happy, then she will be. And so, Jade is always smiling and laughing, trying desperately to ignore all the unhappiness that surrounds her. People have said she's just ignoring reality, hiding away in her own, happy little world. But she sees it more as taking reality, and looking at it differently. Even if death, and wrong and sadness is everywhere - it doesn't mean life and happiness can'T be there as well. And she decides to look at the better half. However, it's not like she always prevails in this. Despite popular belief, she's very aware of all the sorrow that fills her world; that hardly anyone is living anymore, they're all just trying to survive. There's been many times when she just wants to give up. What's the point in this life anyway? Fortunately, she's been able to pull herself out of these bouts with depression...but it gets harder every time. And lets not forget her temper. It's not a quick temper, and it's not terribly easy to get her mad, but it's a fierce one.
Job/Skill: Jade doesn't have specific job or trade - though she is a bit of a mercenary. Her grandfather taught her hand-to-hand and swordsmanship from a very young age, for years and years she practiced. He took her into the forests with nothing but the clothes on their backs and taught to live off the land. So, I guess you could say her skills are fighting and surviving.
Gear: A slightly curved sword with an elaborate hilt (which is always strapped to her back) which was given to her by her grandfather. She keeps a small dagger strapped to her ankle, as well.
Dragon: None (as of yet).
Background: Jade Ryder never knew her parents. She has no idea what their names are, what they were like, or even what happened to them. For her whole life, she lived with her grandfather. Though, she isn't sure if he actually is her grandfather, but that's what she called him. He taught her from how to walk to how to kill; as well as schooling her. It was kind of difficult, seeing as libraries or schools weren't exactly in an abundance, but he did what he could. Her grandfather taught her to read, write, about nature and the animals. As well as history, and how life was years in the past. Jade loved to hear his stories of when he was a small boy. But alas, all good things come to end. Not very long after she turned twenty-one, he passed away. He went to bed one night, and never woke up. She was happy he had such a peaceful passing, but her heart ached to hear his voice just one more time. She hired a few men from the Town and buried him the same morning, placing a cross she'd made with the words "Grandfather. A man of wisdom, of peace and of love. Gone, but not forgotten." over his grave. She sold everything they had in the small cottage that sat between the town and the forest, and stuffed everything of hers into a bag and began to wander. She worked here and there, adding money to the small brown bag she kept with her at all times. At some points, she fought for money, others she lived off the land, and still other times she was hired to work security, move a sensitive package from point "A" to "B", or even to go on dragon raids. Her life is anything but consistent.
Other: Jade has a tattoo saying "Life is beautiful." on her inner-wrist, as well as the date her grandfather died on the back of her neck.

So begins...

Kaylani moved through the forest quickly staying low to the ground and keeping her rifle in hand. She wasn't looking for any large game fore she still have to carry back whatever she killed. She spotted an elk and quickly ducked behind a tree. She definitely didn't want one of those. They might be nice for a large family but for one person it would just go to waste. “Move along...” She thought to herself as she watched the grazing creature slowly move away. Something scurried past her feet and she quickly looked down at a squirrel and slowly crouched down and watched the small animal clean itself. She carefully pulled out her knife as her head tilted to the side. She waited until the animal's eyes were closed and quickly plunged the knife into its body. She pulled a thin rope out of her bag and tied it around the small animal before looping it around the shoulder strap of the bag.

“Come out little animals...” She whispered as she held her hunting knife tightly at her side as she moved through the forest as stealthily as a human could. She ducked low when she saw a dragon over head and quickly changed direction staying close to the outskirts and not going too deep into the forest.

She didn't know that another town had been attacked by a dragon and that she probably should be retreating back to her own very well protected town. She rounded a tree and spotted another man hunting, she assumed. Maybe he hadn't seen her. She touched her mask before taking a heavy breath and moving away from the other spotting a large raptor in one of the trees above. “Jackpot,” She grabbed her rifle and took aim, “You're gonna keep me fed for a long time,” She pulled the trigger and the winged beast fell to the forest floor causing leave and feathers to scatter. She quickly ran over to her kill and snapped its neck just to make sure that it was truly dead before tying its legs together and attaching it to the shoulder strap of her bag. She had enough to last her.

Quickly running back to the outskirts of town she saw the panic at the river's edge. “What happened?” She asked a man that scanned the sky. He told her of the fire dragon that had attacked the other village. “How many survivors?” She asked and watched the man shrug.

“That new village near the mountains was also hit but by a thunder dragon,” The man spoke quickly before calling to some of the guards, “You'd better head back to town.” He warned before walking over to the heavily armed men. Kaylani took a breath and walked over to the river.

“What's going on guys?” She spoke to the clear water hoping that the water dragons would be of help. As if they cared if another village was burned down or not. “Be careful... stay in the water, 'kay?” She said softly as she glanced over at a woman marching with the troops. Her head tilted a bit as she saw her inquire about the commotion. “What are you guys gonna do?” She asked softly as she approached the two walking just behind them. She wasn't quite ready to head back to town yet. She adjusted her bag letting the dead animals bump her leg slightly. “Gonna go help the survivors?” She asked a bit louder as she tried to keep up with them.

Kaylani paused and looked at the woman. “Oh... it wouldn't ruin my day in the least. Not that I want to see the carnage or anything,” She cleared her throat, “I told the water dragons to hide...” She spoke as she followed the woman for a bit. She moved over to the water and crouched down, “I wonder if they listened...” She tilted her head to the side as she watched something shimmer in the water, “I guess not.” She looked at her reflection tilted her head to the side.

“So pretty...” She spoke as her eyes focused on the golden eyes of the dragon staring up at her. She had completely forgotten that she had two bleeding animals hanging on her side as she watched the dragon poke its nose out of the water. “I really like what you've done with the water,” She smiled her her mask and watched it just stare blankly at her. She turned her head when she saw its mouth move on the surface and she could have sworn she heard the words, “What a strange human.” But she wasn't sure.

“Perhaps...” She replied and watched it move a bit closer to the shore. It stared at her bag where the squirrel and bird hung. “Um... here,” She untied the squirrel and tossed it near the dragon and watched it eat the tiny animal. “Sorry,” She spoke when it looked at her bird, “I can't spare anymore today,” She gave a shrug and pushed it back so that it was behind her. “Wait!” She watched it sink into the water and swim off. “Mean ol' dragon only hanging around for my food.” She pouted and stood up. She crossed her arms over her chest before spotting Jade.

“Um...” Her voice grew quiet as she tried to be social. “Wanna head back to town?” She asked as she waited for her to get some water.

Kaylani knew that dragon tamers weren't welcome in any town and that people who openly sympathized with dragons like she did were looked down upon but she was had never thought of becoming a dragon tamer. She more so wanted to make peace with the dragons and learn about them. “No. I just like to speak with them every once in a while.” She spoke calmly. “They really aren't the type of creatures that should be tamed anyway,” She spoke with a nod towards the water.

Perhaps she wouldn't mind befriending one. The few kind ones that she had come across only made her love them more but she wouldn't try to make one do her biding. That would just be mean. “You're not a tamer are you?” She touched the horn on her mask and sighed. She really wished that she didn't have to worry about the radiation. The mask was getting hot and she was tempted to run back to town so that she can sit in her cool burrow.

Kaylani began to fidget with the strap of her bag losing sight of what was going on for a moment. Her eyes drifted to the water then to the forest. She wasn't sure what she wanted more, to run home or to go off into the wild. Her attention quickly snapped back to the woman in front of her once she introduced herself. She smiled under her mask and gave a sharp nod in reply, "And I'm Kaylani." Her words were sharp. This wasn't her first encounter with a wanderer but she'd never engaged one before so she made another long pause.

"Jobs? So you hunt then..." She assumed. She crossed her arms over her chest for a moment, "That means your tough." She had never tried to take down a dragon before but she had no problem taking down the other beast that filled the forests. "Can I join you?" She paused for a moment, "I know how to take care of myself so I promise not to be a burden." She spoke while patting her rifle as it hung on her arm. She wasn't sure if trying to join a stranger was a good idea but it was better then going back to her hole and doing nothing.

Did that mean that she had a traveling companion? Kaylani tugged on her hood a bit as the thought of staying above ground for days at a time started to sink in. “Thanks so much for letting me come along with you.” She nodded her head a bit. “I guess...” She paused and cleared her throat. She was starting to overheat, “Since I need to get some things for travel, you can come over my place and I'll roast up this guy for us.” She offered while gently shaking the bird on her hip.

“We'll be spending a lot of time above ground.... wont we?” She finally asked knowing the answer. “Not that it'll be a problem.” She quickly added before pulling out her canteen. “I've just never gone beyond the forest.” She pushed her mask up just so that her mouth was exposed and she quickly drank down the fresh water. She tried to enjoy the breeze that graced her chin but her paranoia got to her and she quickly capped the water and pushed down her mask. “I wonder...” She continued to fix her mask until she felt it seal tightly to her face, “Have you ever met a hybrid?” She took a couple deep breaths of the filtered air, “I met one once while I was hunting. She was a sweet girl...” Her thoughts trailed off as she spotted a dragon fly overhead. It didn't seem to be interested in the townspeople or the town but it was beautiful.
