Bryne Netherland || Raven|| 24 || Selkie|| Gay
Abilities
As a selkie, he has the ability to transform into a seal at will. At a very young age, he had progressed quicker than all the other children and had learned how to manipulate his form into that of a human. However, he can lose control of this when he is scared; it seldom happens but fear will force him to turn back into his seal form. Bryne also possess some ability to manipulate water into ice. He can spit ice shards if he wanted to or leave frost covered finger prints on warm surfaces. It comes in handy when he is trying to avoid others, threatening them with his power of ice. Bryne is also aware of his manipulative powers he has on women and even men. He has embraced it and will use it whenever the opportunity arises. He is not unaware of how he looks, but rather doesn’t care since his looks are only a tool in getting his way.
Skills
Bryne is excels at infuriating others with his cleverness and his deep seated need to point out little details of others’ lives. Ever since he was little, he had a very keen eye and was able to tell what people had been doing nights before. His eye for detail is immaculate and helps him further in his art, being that he tends to draw Hyper Realistic paintings and sketches instead of quick pen and ink doodles.
Bryne also is very good with language; he can speak a number of ancient dialects as well as double talk and backwards speak.
Weaknesses
“I have the habit of… well, I have the habit of always having the need to be perfect… Is that so wrong?”
“I refuse to care about anyone but myself... It hurts too much.”
“I smoke like a chimney when no one is around, it’s my way of relief.”
Fears
“Keep all furry creatures away from me.”
“I will not lie… Alone is all I have… It shields me from the likes of humans and you.”
“I am not gay. I- I don’t fancy boys, stop asking.”
Likes
“If I say tea and an old book, how old would you say I am? I do on the other hand love painting and new paint brushes. Buying new oil tubes or water colours are always exciting for me. I do enjoy music however, piano being my favourite above all. I’m a very good piano player… If you’d ever like to hear… I’ll one day join the ranks of Rob Coslow and learn from him one day; the man is a genius. I do also enjoy swimming quite a bit, seeing as I am a selkie and all. However, I do actually enjoy steam rooms and saunas.”
Dislikes
“I was always such a quiet child… I was picked on a lot because of what I am and how detail oriented I was. I still am, mind you, but I’ve learned to… Harness in my annoying habit of blurting facts out. I don’t tend to make friends easily because of it and this displeases me however it’s not so bad. I’m not quite fond of my smoking habit either, but it is soothing to my soul.”
Personality
Bryne is very reserved and proper; he oozes quiet confidence and a sort of arrogance that could be found attractive. He is quiet, but very intelligent and will have no problem pointing out when a person is wrong. When he warms up to someone, he seems to relax and become more affectionate with them.
Selkies in origin are from Scotland, Ireland and even found in Norway. Having grown up on the coasts of Ireland, Bryne, his parents and his grandmother were naturally exposed to the myths and legends that surrounded their kind. His grandmother, Aoibheann, used to tell him about the times when she was young and all the Selkies used to have what they called “Land parties” when the humans were asleep. She also told him about the dangers of the sea and the savage seamen who would hunt Selkies down in groups to shear off their seal skins.
When Bryne was 11, his parents disappeared one evening without any notice. He can still remember that night very vividly, in almost perfect detail except for one thing; how the fire had started.
It was a cold autumn’s eve, and Bryne was sat up in his room painting the view that was laid out before him outside his bay window. His grandmother and parents were milling about, still awake and full of life, downstairs as they chatted animatedly. It had made the youth smile as his brush had slid effortlessly along the rough canvas.
Then the front door shut and all went quiet. He had heard his grandmother speak out loud to herself in Gaelic before all that filled his room was the soft murmur of the sea meeting the shore. Bryne then lost himself in his painting once more before he had felt the warmth lick at his back. Had it been minutes? Hours? He did not know at the time but as he had turned around, he was met with his bedroom door set aflame in angry orange and red. He had heard his grandmother yell and looked down to see her on her knees by his window, pleading and crying for him to get out.
Bryne remembered panicking, fear gripping his heart as if someone had wrapped twine around it and was now pulling hard to squeeze the frightened muscle. That was when he had transformed; his fear forcing him to fall to the carpet in his seal form before everything had went red.
A few days afterward, his grandmother had them both flown over to America to then settle in the town called Teraton. “This, dear Raven, will be our new home.”
