"I love people- so how am I supposed to ignore when they're in pain?"

a character in “Return to the Dark Ages”, as played by Miss Nomer

Description

Image
Image
Jeremy Quentin Whelk || "Jem" || Eighteen [18] || Witch || Heterosexual

Image Abilities
Jeremy was born to a witch and a human. Luckily for him, the witch was his mother, and thus he still has a decent competence with magics. His best subject is, by far, potion brewing. Even regarding normal classes, he has always had a fondness for chemistry and chemicals and the way things mix and react with each other, this love even going towards people as well, often. His prowess with potions is virtually unmatched by others in his age group, and he prides himself on his ability to bottle fame, brew glory, and even stopper death. Much like other witches in the community, he makes some of his money by selling his potions, which are considered the best in town. Unfortunately, he's never been much for rituals or transfiguration, but he's also quite passable at charms and the like. His mother is one of the most respected witches in town, due to a long lineage of powerful witches, and he has inherited some of those gifts- along with a good amount of disappointment about the fact that they only had a son, never a daughter to carry on the family name.

Skills
Chemisty || Science || Mathematics || Finding Things || Taking Things Apart || Observing Things || Very Empathetic || Good Climber

Weaknesses
Putting Things Back Together || Writing || Becomes Too Attached to People || Somewhat Possessive || Allergic to Bees || Bad With Transfiguration || Sometimes Overemotional || Bad at Bargaining [He often ends up selling his potions far below their value] || Easily Won Over

Fears
Bee Stings "I'm, erm, Allergic, so I tend to avoid bees in general, of course."

Being Alone "I don't find myself to be very good company- and I feel safer with other people around."

Being Hated "I don't want to make people angry, or dislike me. Sometimes I do things, and it drives people away."

Most people who know Jem will agree that he has a somewhat volatile personality, able to go from one end of the spectrum to the other at the drop of the dime. He doesn't have Bipolar disorder, or if he does, it's undiagnosed, but it's quite clear that his emotions aren't always completely stable. On one hand, he is childish and sweet, a hopeless romantic with a dimpled smile that gets people to trust him. And he really is quite trustworthy, most of the time, rarely lying and almost desperate to please people due to a craving for affection. There is a reason for his extroversion, and it has everything to do with the fact that he loves to be around other people. He just loves people in general. But, perhaps he loves them too much.

Jem has the tendency to invest himself wholly in friendships and relationships and the like. He doesn't do half-way acquaintances, really, and he's a bit too quick to put himself on the line for others. A small self confidence has him devoting himself to friendships and relationships because he's always believed that other people are far more worth it than he is. He's an extremely empathetic person, to the point where he seems to experience the same pain and joy as others just by watching them go through such feelings. He hates to see other people hurt, because it hurts him, and deeply so. He has always tried to keep this side under wraps, but it sometimes gleams through. When he loses friends, or goes through a breakup, or anything along those lines, Jem tends to become depressed very quickly. Other people are his life, and losing them is like losing a piece of himself.

The last paragraph aside, he genuinely is a nice person, with some emotional problems at time, whom makes friends easily and is incredibly loyal and willing to put the needs of others before himself. He is a fan of random acts of kindness and large romantic gestures and making people smile.

{ June 21st | 6:00pm | Teraton, North Carolina }

The Summer Solstice Festival has been a staple of the Teraton community far before it became set aside for the relocation process of the supernatural community in the area. Once simply referred to as the Summer Fair, it has now come to be called by a more appropriate name. It is most greatly celebrated by the witch community of the somewhat small town, and many run stalls or have special sales for the event. Lights are strung across buildings and trees to create a magical, picturesque atmosphere. The festival is something that most look forward to, and while it is not incredibly large, it is a dear part of the community.

It serves as many things. For the witch community, it is expected that young witches, coming of age, begin to create some product, or develop some skill for a service, which they will demonstrate here. The faerie community is also known to take special joy in the event, especially the summer fae, as a matter of course given that it is a summer holiday. Many people also take it as a romantic event, and the music [different bands or DJs on various corners] as well as the lights help this concept along. It also happens to line up to be just after the schools get out, so clusters of high schoolers, middle schoolers, and elementary schoolers can often be seen in various places.

Attractions of Note
Ferris Wheel [Provided By The City Council]
The Magical Lane [All-magic Corner of Witch's Wares]
Local Bands [The best of which playing on a platform in Town Square]

Cj literally tossed a plate to his brother, a huge grin forming on his face when he didn't drop it. Below them, there sat shattered plates from there three previous attempts of using the plates like frisbees. "No more," Alexander said, trying to be stern, but failing, and cracking up at the shocked face Cj shot him, making him crack up. Madden, entered the room and Cj put on a blank face, quickly exiting the room, and the ridicule his twin sister would give them two.

A huge grin formed on his face as he piled his arms with plates; two cheeseburgers, a specialty salad, and a chicken bartuci; as well as a tray of cups. Cj made his way to table 10, asking two tables along the way how their meal was, and gave the family their food. "How's the puppy, Mr Carpson?" He asked, engaging in a short, but sweet conversation with the family who'd he'd known since his second day at the restaurant. Leaving them to their meals, Cj walked back into the kitchen, receiving a quick shove from Madden as she exited to take orders. Alexander gave him a quick laugh, taking off his apron. "I'm heading out. See you soon, probably," he muttered, grinning at his brother before signaling to a girl smiling in at Alexander from the window. Cj smiled in reply, taking down the order he had just served. After Alexander exited the kitchen, Cj reached into his pocket and pulled out a pill bottle.

He popped two pills, already feeling his last dose wearing off. His mind was getting jumpy, and while serving the waters to the Carpson's, his hand had grown shaky. At least he wouldn't be a mess during the festival.

Speaking of the festival, a quick look at his watch told him he only had five more minutes. His phone vibrated in his pocket twice, a message from Mel and a message from Belinda appearing. Cj sent each a quick message.

To: Mel
Most definitely. Tonight we party hard?
From: Cj

To: Belinda
I'll win you the biggest prize I can, maybe more ;)
From: Cj

Chuckling lightly at his flirty exchange with Belinda, Cj pocketed his phone. He took a peak out of the kitchen, searching for Jae. Where was she? No matter, his eyes fell on Jem, now at the door, talking to Alexander, who then nodded toward him, and grinned. He quickly made his way to the door, almost bumping into an old lady as he moved, careful to apologize. "J-money," he chuckled, giving his best friend their usual handshake and grinning wide. "I've got two more tables, then we're out of here."

He made his way back to the kitchen, checking the order list then picking up two drink trays and a plate of some type of fish. The drinks were for a group of girls, probably about 16, each sending Cj flirty glances, which in reply he smiled. He then brought the fish to a man sitting alone at the bar, a man he knew to have worked at a restaurant in a different part of town. It seemed other's could not keep themselves away from their food, like it was bewitched or something. Dropping the trays back off at the kitchen, and giving his mum a quick hug goodbye, Cj made his way back to Jem, grinning widely at whatever it was they'd be doing tonight.

After his brief encounter with Alexander, who soon leaves, presumably to go walk around with the girl who had been staring through the window when Jem walked in, the dimpled boy does find the person he's looking for. Hopefully the Shantley parents are planning to let their primary workers take the night off. It would surprise Jem if they didn't- it's not like they've kept the siblings locked in working for the past several festivals. As far as families go, CJ has a really good one, Jem thinks. They all seem to get along very well, at least. Not that Jem would ever complain of his family- they stick together, even if his mother and father have the tendency to argue quite a bit. It's a good thing neither of them are the sort to put aggressive words into action- especially with his parents' potions, which would be too perfect for bits of revenge or irritation and such.

CJ promises to be done soon, which merits another smile from Jem- not that his smiles are really a rare commodity to come by. Both of the friends, best friends since childhood, are known to be the sort who smile quite a lot. After all, they share a sort of sociable cheerfulness, as well as the fact that it kind of brushes aside any other issues the two may have. In Jem's case, people tend to forget how bad his sulking can be, or how emotionally sensitive he is [almost child-like], when faced only with a boyish smile and a joke. That's the way he likes it, of course. He's too dependent on the presence of others to allow them to slip away so easily.

As his brunette friend returns, this time for them to set off and enjoy the festival, Jem finds himself smiling once more. "So, where to first? Games? Music? Meet up with people?" he asks, never having had qualms with letting other people make decisions for him, especially ones so trivial. Besides, he doesn't know how long CJ's parents will let one of their few waiters go for- or how busy the restaurant usually gets during the festival, now that he thinks about it. He's never hung around the place during the Summer Solstice.

"Maybe we could find Skye?" he adds, mentioning their mutual friend [though he perhaps sees the spring faerie as more than a friend].

Mel owns a phone. She knows how to use her phone. She even goes sofar as to use it fairly frequently. That being said, she is one of those people who will send a text, put her phone down, and not look at it again for an hour, leaving the other person mildly confused. At the moment, she can argue the excuse that the music and dancing and cute guy dancing diagonally from her served to redirect her attention. Whatever the argument, the young woman doesn't notice the response texts that float in, focused on dancing and the music and the fact that the weather is impossibly perfect at that moment. It's her ideal summer day, really- perfect weather, perfect waves, perfect shots, and good music.

And, she soon finds out, good friends. It's fortunate that Chris actually physically approached her, because she hadn't noticed his text, just as she hadn't most of the other messages. Hearing his voice, she turns around to face the shapeshifter, whose hands-in-pocket, make-self-smaller stance looks impossibly awkward among the pulsing semi-crowd. She grins at him, her wide and easy smile as distinctive to her as Jem's dimpled one is to him. "Hey! My mood, man- on a roller coaster that only goes up, my friend," she adds with a twist of her smile that gives it a funny looking quirk towards one side. As her speech patterns often suggest, Mel is a rather relaxed, non serious person. "Speaking of moods, here comes your lady love," she refers to his less than subtle crush on Theo Osonia, the girl hair that Mel has often compared to a supernova. To Mel's credit, she drops her voice slightly, out of courtesy for Chris's anxiousness.

Mel raises her eyebrows at Theo, smile quirking once more, "I took lessons from her." She looks over Theo once, then beams. "Nice to see you aren't wearing heels this year."

Finally, her attentions are located in such a way that she feels a text coming in. Leaning in towards Chris, she whispers [as quiety as she can to still be heard, "I'm gonna ditch this crowd. But first, I'll leave you and lady nova over there to the privacy of the mob." With a wink and shoulder nudge, she is out of sight, weaving through the crowd until she reaches clearer lands, where she can check her phone and wait for Chris and Theo to join her, if they choose to. This is just like Mel- bring people into her own habitat, only to leave them there to fend for themselves.

To: Jae
Oh, love, I'm blushing. I trust you'll wait for me. For a few minutes. Or an hour. I'll get there eventually

To: Belinda
I'll be looking for that top- and maybe the face. :-)

To: Skye
Maybe near the Ferris wheel. Stay tuned.

To: Chris
Wow, long time no see. Having fun in the crowd? Knowing you, I'm surprised you aren't crowd surfing yet!

To: CJ
The hardest! If you're nice, I'll give you cheaper drinks during my shift.

Cj grins at Jem, exiting with him. "Can we do them all?" He chuckles, holding the door for two girls who look about their age, and then continuing with Jem. His comment about Skye draws a nod from Cj, his eyes looking over his best friends face for the usual glint he gets when speaking about the young faerie. He nodded again, his phone vibrating. Pulling it out, he turned at the end of the road, signaling Jem to follow. "Where is she now," he questions, banging out the texts he had gotten.

To: Maya
Heading over now. For sure, I'm with Jem. Find us?
From: Cj

To: Mel
Then I will definitely be nice. When are ya working till?
From: Cj

To: Belinda
I'm down. Let me know when you wanna meet up :)
From: CJ

After sending the texts, he pocketed his phone, turning his whole attention to his best friend. If he was being honest, which he generally was, he missed hanging out with Jem. Sure, they hung out a lot, but it seemed any time they were together now a days, Skye or another girl showed up, which was totally fine, but they hadn't hung out just them two in a while. He shrugged off the thought, pulling his hand up to run it through his hair. They were walking somewhere, and Cj had to put all of his mind into keeping on track, wanting to move and touch everything on any side of them. The food, the people, the loud music. It was all so distracting. His head bounced around, but he was able to keep walking with Jem. Hopefully Jem didn't notice the slight change in his attitude; they'd amped up his meds. But then again, Cj was always this bouncy.

Before she gets any responses via text, Mel is attacked, in the friendliest of ways, by her fellow selkie, Belinda Santiago. Belinda is the sort of person who people either adore or hate, and most tend to lean towards the former, from what Mel's seen. The girl's easy smile, paired with eyes that look like a puppy's, is completely contagious. Not that it takes much to get Mel smiling, of course, but she is now, after returning her friend's surprise-attack hug with a squeeze and a grin, "Hey there, chickadee. Well, the wait is over, isn't it? Which means it is about time to have some fun, eh?" Belinda's enthusiasm would've made the platinum blonde smile, had she not already been beaming in general.

It is hardly a surprise to see Derrick trailing behind Belinda. The two always seem incredibly close, especially when Belinda is between relationships, which she often seems to be. The two share a hug as well, though much briefer than Mel's hug with Belinda. While friends, they aren't quite as close as the two selkie are with each other. "Oh, you know, assembling. Chris is smashed in the crowd with Theo," she adds with a knowing smile. It's hardly a secret that Chris has a massive crush on the fellow shapeshifter. Even he seems to know that everybody knows it.

"Jae's somewhere near the ferris wheel, last I've heard, and I think Skye should be wandering around somewhere. CJ's probably with Jem? Might meet up with him eventually," she lists off the people that she's contacted to hang out with, save for the two who are standing right in front of her. A clenching in her stomach tells Mel that right now would be an excellent time to grab a snack. She relates this suggestion to the duo before her.

"We can head over through the game section. I'm sure Chris won't mind us leaving him behind with Theo," she suggests. Her phone then buzzes in the back pocket of her shorts, so she gives an apologetic smile, not really different from her normal smile, and takes it out.

To: CJ
8-1am

To: Jae
Caught? Been steppin on toes again?

To: Skye
Awesome. Keep up the good work.

Jem returns CJ's smile with one of his own at the suggestion that they do them all. He's perfectly okay with that- experiencing every bit of the festival. Last year he hadn't attended, having fallen into one of his moods after a bad break up, and he is thus determined for the day lost. Besides, it would certainly help to erase the memories of last year as much as possible- as with the ending of all relationships, romantic or platonic, it had been a huge hit to the ever-sensitive witch boy. He follows after CJ, falling into step right beside his childhood friend. The question gives him a momentary pause, thought-wise. He doesn't actually know where she is and has, not being much of a phone guy, left his cellphone back at home. Guesses will just have to do.

"Well, she's probably around, I guess? Let's just walk around, and see if we happen upon her," He suggests, a compromise in order to free more time to hang out with CJ. His friend has not been the only one to note that they don't hang out as much as they used to. This is the sort of thing that Jem tends to be very quick to notice, even if it is trivial.

CJ is as bouncy as usual, so Jem doesn't really notice his hyperactivity acting up more than usual. Sure, he sees that CJ's eyes are flitting around quite a bit, but that's just CJ, usually. Still, he worries for a moment, wondering if something has happened or if he's had some sort of medication issue. They first bonded because CJ hadn't taken his meds, and Jem had helped to calm him down. Both boys have their own little problems, as far as processing and brain activity goes, even if CJ is the only one of the two who is medicated for it.

"Want to go play a game or something?" Jem suggests, thinking that it would be a good way to help funnel his friend's general nervous energy. Besides, they are reaching the area that has a long line of carnival style games, and it looks like fun. Jem wouldn't mind trying his hand at one of the games, to see if he can maybe win one of the prizes.

Skye quirked an eyebrow as Jae's face transformed from uncomprehending to understanding, her mind quickly putting together Skye's subtle hints. However, the witch didn't react as Skye had expected, instead grabbing her arm and dragging her out of ear shot of the stall worker. "Um, Skye I don't know about you, but in the world that I live in...that's called cheating!" Jae said, her voice a half whisper and half shout. "I'm disappointed in you." She continued further, a rare serious expression crossing her face, "I don't get you. One day you're threatening our friendship because I lied, then the next second you're deceiving people with your illusions, that's not fair at all."

In all honesty it probably wasn't fair, but when had a faerie ever been known as just? In Skye's mind lying, outright lying to someone's face was wrong. There was no grey area for it, if you lied than you were lowered in Skye's mind. But omitting the truth was something that Skye had no trouble with. Simply allowing people to jump to their own conclusions was Skye's favourite game.
"I never lied." Skye began, a playful smile on her face revealing that she wasn't taking Jae's telling off as seriously as she probably should have. "Lying is for people who lack the will to speak the truth. All I do is show people what they want and expect to see." Skye gave Jae a pout of her own and held up her prized toy bear at eye level with the two girls. "It would have been nice for Mr Cuddles to have a friend." Skye said as she created an illusion. This time Skye's magic was focused on the stuffed toy. 'Mr Cuddles', as she had named him, appeared to move of his own accord. The line of his mouth moving down into a sad frown while tears began to fall from his button eyes. Skye blinked, pushing the illusion further and suddenly the sound of Mr Cuddles sniffing broke through the general sounds of the crowd around them. No one watching would be able to see through Skye's illusion to the inanimate toy bear that was actually sitting in her hands. All they would see was the distraught toy bear crying his eyes out and occasionally blowing his nose on his furry paw.

While Mr Cuddles 'cried' Skye's eyes happened to glance up behind Jae and catch sight of a pair of familiar faces just wondering into the games area. Skye knew Jem and CJ from their younger days since all three had grown up in Teraton together, they were always good fun to hang out with. The illusion around Mr Cuddles had reacted to Skye's excitement of seeing her friends. The bear, previously crying buckets, wiped the tears off his fur and broke into a winning smile. Mr Cuddles stood up in Skye's hand, straightened his bow-tie (because all the best toy bears have bow-ties) and began to jump madly up and down on her palm. Since Skye and Jae were standing pretty much in the middle of the area she hoped that one of the boys would see them and come over, if not Skye would ambush them when she could.

Skye broke the illusion and the bear instantly returned to a lifeless slump. At the same time her phone vibrated in her pocket, indicating another text which was most likely from Mel. However a moment later Skye caught sight of the platinum blonde walking with Belinda and Derrick. It seemed everyone was congregating around the games.
"Come on Jae," Skye said, returning her attention to her friend standing in front of her, "You've probably spent enough money on the game to outright buy the bear, I know I did." Skye coaxed, knowing that the amount of money she had spent on her game had probably been worth two of the things, "Last chance..."

Cj turned back to Jem, his eyes still on one of the many colorful games. "Yeah for sure," he said, smiling at the thought of his friend and Skye. Yeah, Jem liked her, he could tell, but just how much was slightly confusing. He tilted his head slightly to look at his friend, trying to catch his eyes, then getting distracted as the two continue closer to the games.

His phone vibrated, and as he took it out it vibrated again. He read each message then replied to it, trying to walk while typing.

To: Jae
We can get food later or something
From: CJ

To: Mel
Perfect. I will be there in a little then
From: CJ

To: Belinda
I'm over there now
From: CJ

CJ sent the last of his texts, and while checking the time, his eyes flashed up as his whole body came in contact with something. He found himself looking at Jae and Skye, his hand now on Jae's arm as he caught her, stopping her from falling. A short, "Sorry!" was out of his mouth before he saw who he'd bumped into, out of habit. At the sight of his close friend, a cheeky smile fit on his face, his arm pulling her in for a hug before letting her go. He grinned widely at Skye too, putting his arms out for a hug. Everyone who knew him, knew he was a hugger. It was just part of being CJ.

"I never lied." Jae scoffed and rolled her eyes. A rare action that she seen others do, but never herself. This was her first and she didn't like what she was feeling. Jae wanted to smile and slap the Skye's back and tell her that this was just a joke and they could get the bear but this was a serious situation. This called for drastic measures. If that meant that Jae had to get out of her comfort zone than so be it. "Lying is for people who lack the will to speak the truth. All I do is show people what they want and expect to see." Jae just couldn't believe what she was hearing. This is coming from a fairy. A FLIPPING FAIRY! "They don't expect me to get the bottles down. So it's going to look suspicions if I did after my gazillion attempt to win." Jae pointed out using her hands for wide gestures. She was getting the hang of this.

"It would have been nice for Mr Cuddles to have a friend." Jae narrowed her eyes in confusion and then it happened. The movement from the teddy bear. It was crying. Right in front of her. Jae felt herself getting sad just looking at him. Now imagine how she felt when she heard him sniffing. Jae put an hand to her mouth and watched the bear show it's emotions. Occasionally wiping at his face to get rid of the stray tears. Then the bear stopped and he looked cheery. Jae tilted her head in confusion. What happened to crying buckets of water? What changed his mood. A buzzing noise could be heard but it was faint. After a while Jae figured it was her phone and then everything came to her. An illusion. Jae's mouth dropped in shock. She couldn't believe it.

Jae snapped out of her shock when a body slammed into hers, almost making her fall if it wasn't for the arm that caught her. "Sorry!" Jae steadied herself and looked at CJ. She recognized that hyperactive voice anywhere. Jae smiled at him and he did too pulling her in for a hug which she returned instantly. Man she hasn't seen him all day. She didn't go in for work since her dad wanted help at Magical Lane. "CJ! Dude, I haven't seen you in the longest! How's life?" Jae joked her mood switching to chipper in a nanosecond. She turned to see Jeremy as well. "Jer-bear! What's up?" Jae said. Man the whole gang was here. Well most of them. That was when Jae remembered she got a text. When she looked it was actually two. One from Mel and the other CJ. No point on replying to his seeing as he was in front of her.

Something like that. Promise to bail me out? XD

It seemed that Jae was saved from answering Skye's enticing offer by the sudden arrival of their mutual friends. Skye hadn't even needed to ambush the pair of boys as CJ bumped right into Jae. Indeed CJ almost knocked Jae off her feet as he crashed into her, however he was quick enough to stop her falling and issued a quick "Sorry" before realising who he had crashed in to. He gave the two girls a cheerful grin and immediately pulled Jae into a big bear guy. Jae's tune perked up rather quickly at the appearance of the two boys and she happily returned CJ's hug. The two disentangled and CJ turned to Skye, his arms open in invitation. Never one to disappoint Skye stepped forward and gave him a tight hug. "As always, a pleasure to see you CJ." She said lightly, emphasising her words with a playful squeeze.

"What have you two been up to?" Skye asked as she drew back, casting a cheeky glance between the two. Skye stepped up to Jeremy and slung an arm around his waist, playfully bumping her hip against his side. "I'm glad we found each other." She said in greeting to Jeremy. Skye didn't know about the secret feelings Jeremy harboured for her. Or, if she did have an inkling, she dismissed it as she assumed that Jeremy would have made a move before now. Either way, she has always loved joking with him and sometimes those jokes take on a more flirtatious nature. "Have you come to win a prize?" She asked, her tone was innocent but her eyes twinkled mischievously, "Jae was having trouble winning herself a teddy bear, but I managed to get one." Skye couldn't help but cast a cheeky glance at Jae. Of course she was teasing and hopefully Jae would understand that. Then again, given Jae's surprising reaction to Skye's previous offer of 'help', Skye was beginning to think that she had misjudged her friend. Not that that would stop her from playfully joking about it.

Of course, with the two boys in tow she was sure that there would be plenty more to joke about. Hopefully they would also be able to meet up with more of their friends, completing the gang. Although Skye would be perfectly happy to stay with the group as it was, provided of course that the boys weren't about to rush off. She hoped not, nor did she think it likely. She couldn't help the smile that crept onto her face as she contemplated the potential the night offered and glanced around the small circle, waiting for her friend's to reply.

Jem smiles, becoming somewhat distracted by the color and noise of the games area. His attention has to be divided in two, now, though he makes a valiant attempt to keep it primarily on CJ, succeeding for the most point. In fact, CJ is also being distracted by the games, as well as his phone, making Jem's friend's attention split into three thirds. Of course, this is usual, and more than likely there are other tiny fragments digging into the other male witch's focus, things which Jem has yet to see or hasn't decided is requiring of any serious attentions from himself.

Then, Jem catches sight of Skye, and he lights up a bit, though she is also accompanied by Jae, who seems to constantly be teasing him for some reason or another. "Ah, Sk-" before he can really greet her, CJ, who had apparently not actually been paying attention due to his cell phone, collides into Jae. Jem's face breaks out into a large grin, for he clearly thinks the collision, and CJ's cheeky grin following it, to be somewhat funny. The blond stands slightly back whilst CJ greets the two girls with hugs, as is his tendency. Jae turns and greets him first, calling him Jer-Bear, which Jeremy kind of dislikes, but dismisses all the same. He simply smiles.

"The usual- potions and books. You?" his response is quite brief, and paired with a bit of a shrug. He's not very good at small talk, typically, but can muster up this much, at least. He's always rather envied those whom he knows that bypass it entirely, leaping over weather and "How are you?"s in favor of significantly greener conversational pastures. With a glance towards Skye, he can guess that the two have already played the games for a bit. Before he can ask where they've won the bear from, Skye interjects, and sort of answers the question.

She does so while wrapping her arm around his waist, contact which he is intensely aware of. He's fairly certain that his affections are entirely unrequited and unnoticed, which can be incredibly frustrating when Skye is constantly flirting with [or in front of] him. Still, hoping his face isn't red, as he's had enough practice trying to keep it from flushing, Jem bumps his hip back at hers. He puts his arm over her shoulder, the gesture more possessive, should one see the slight nuances of his body language or expression, than it perhaps ought to be. "Or something along those lines," Jem responds with a smile. Of course he isn't going to admit that 75% of his reasoning for coming over here was hoping that Skye would be around the game section. He knows her well enough to have been correct, it appears. "Hopefully I have more luck than Jae, though," he adds with a smile, beginning to enjoy [as the initial nervousness fades] having his arm around Skye.

Mel raises an eyebrow at Belinda, but humor still sparkles in her eyes. "Not entirely sure on what your definition of a little is, Bel, but you're probably right all the same," she agrees, but is already moving on to the next topic mentally. The girl has never exactly been one for sticking to one subject for too long, and figures that how much Theo and Chris are getting isn't something that she's actually particularly interested in.

Mel glances over at Derrick, grinning, when Bel looks up from her phone to announce the two debts which apparently must be paid. It's just like the girl to already have guys 'owing' her things- Bel always has had this way of washing people up in her energy and attitude. It's something Mel grew into, but Bel, she's always thought, was born with. In childhood, this was worth envying. Luckily, Melanie has since moved on from such petty jealousies. They aren't worth the time, and are never very productive, anyway.

Unsurprisingly, after her announcement, Belinda proceeds to drag Derrick and Mel after her towards the games center, in pursuit of a teddy bear. Mel's nearly certain that the girl has at least three already, given her occasionally childish tastes, but smiles indulgently all the same. It can sometimes be hard to take Belinda seriously when she acts so child-like, no matter how short she makes her shorts, but Mel loves her all the more for this. After all, this fun-seeking attitude is one which the two happen to have in common, besides being the two female selkie in their general age range. It's a rather small town.

-~-~-~-~-

While Bel moons over the teddy bear, Mel's gaze wanders, sliding from face to face of the people, young and old, who walk through the stands. Some hold prizes, others look frustrated, and more still are being drawn towards one game or another. All seem animated, and that's what makes the brief people watching worth it. Her eyes latch onto a familiar face, surrounded by more friendly expressions. It's Jae, of course, accompanied by what appears to be Jem, CJ, and Skye. Mel raises her arm, her natural height helping it to extend above the crowd, and waves it about, before finally bringing her hand to her mouth and whistling, low but loud. It briefly grabs the attention of people in the vicinity, and while most look away immediately after, the intent is that Jae's attention will be captured.

Hot. Hot. Hot.

Adding the energy expended in running with her brother into the heat that radiated from Summer’s hand, all combined with the heat of the summer day, May was already at the brink of her toleration for the heat. When you want to do something at least warn me! She could hear her brother pushing the thought toward her, her laughter ringing like droplets of ice shards throughout the town as the two zipped past the crowds. To tell the truth, she did not hold an ounce of guilt for the prank the twins have just pulled. However, she never did feel much guilt, her icy nature not allowing her to feel for anyone except her other half, who worked perfectly with her on their little game with the witch.

“I think we have just played a very dangerous game, Summer,” Even though it was a dangerous game, playing with a witch of voodoo magic, her voice did not hold a hint of fear, simply amusement.

Without much of a warning, she let go of her brother’s hand after catching sight of one of the booths on the side. A few murmurs, an exchange of currency and a weird glance from the booth’s owner later, May returned to her brother’s side, now with a small white umbrella. Strange, to say the least, for even the owner she was speaking to gave her a questioning glance when she asked for the umbrella, but to her, it was necessary. However, she held it as if it was common spectacle, opening the umbrella and raising it above her head, the umbrella casting a shadow over her small body despite the already setting sun. Much better. Although she did not exactly want to make her twin feel bad by showing her discomfort to the heat he enjoys so much, the feeling of unease was still apparent, especially after the umbrella practically rubbed her dislike for his season in his face.

A single whistle broke through the air and her head turned with annoyance at the sudden disturbance in the already chaotic environment she was not taking much amusement in. She no longer had a sense of where the two of them have wandered to, but simply keeping him within her proximity gave her a sense of comfort. However, her annoyance eased to simple curiosity the second she saw who the whistle was directed at, the two groups on the side included people she knew disliked her with passion, especially that spring faerie she held a unknown grudge against. I've found a new target. Her icy gaze flickered with mischievousness, her hand tugged slightly at the corner of Summer’s sleeves.

The already chilly air around her dropped significantly in temperature as she felt people passing by giving the girl with the umbrella a wary glance. The ground underneath her feet frosted slightly at the sudden drop in temperature. However, her eyes were focused on something else, the teddy bear that stood in the faerie’s hands. "You want a warning, Summer? It's about to get very cold.." Her icy voice broke through the chaotic sounds that roamed the festival and within seconds, spikes of ice grew on the bear, morphing it slightly away from the cute appearance it held, frozen horns and a devil’s tail grew onto its body.

“It looks so much better that way doesn’t it?” She whispered to her twin, that smile forming on the corner of her lips.

After enjoying the festival, some danced all night, some went home [alone or with another], etc. A few witches stayed behind to make quick work of clean help, though they did receive help from some volunteers. Now, it is afternoon of the next day, 12pm. As it is summertime, few people have classes, unless they are taking summer courses of course, but some do have jobs, appointments, etc. Some are dealing with hangovers, headaches, and morning afters, while for others it is simply just another morning to wake up to. All of this depends, of course, on the individual character.

The sun is in the sky, the breeze is gentle and warm, and their is a distant sound of birds singing. Of course Mel, lover of the beach as she is, immediately changed into human form upon waking up, and then quickly went to the little shack where she keeps human clothing to put on a bathing suit and grab her surfboard. If you were to cut the girl, she'd likely bleed salt water, and anyone who knows her would immediately look to the beach [or perhaps the basketball court] on such a day to find her. The perfect conditions, and fairly good waves, mean that she's been in the water since around 9 o'clock, switching between sunbathing and slipping on her rash guard to go surfing. There are others out in the water, some who have been up for far longer than Mel, and she can recognize each of them. Many are Selkie, which makes sense- they are the most likely to spend as much time in the water as possible, given that it is their natural environment.

Mel isn't really the sort to discriminate against waves, more than willing to ride out those small waves that other people might ignore. She has a good sense for when nice sets are coming in, as well, having a natural feel for the movement of the water, as again, most selkie do. Still, it had been a small, quick-to-terminate wave that she rode a little distance, only to jump off her board when she spots Noah Talon, who makes up for in surfing what he lacks conversationally. Having seen him paddle in with one arm, she grins, pulling herself up to straddle her board beside him. As she paddles with both arms, and has never done it any other way, Mel remarks, "One of these days, you're just going to paddle around in a circle or something with that one hand deal." She shifts slightly, adjusting her center of balance backwards a bit. Of course, when it gets too deep for her to touch the ground, Mel moves to lay flat on her stomach on the board. Noah occasionally acts differently.

The bubble of a wave coming in the distance, and the feel of the softest pull in the water, catches Mel's attention. She flashes Noah another smile, message clearly expressing the wave to come as she lays back down on her stomach, waiting for that tug which signals her to paddle. When it comes, her hands cut through the water in a familiar pattern, keeping up with the wave, until she pops up and rides it out. Mel crouches down and touches the water, turning the board slightly to move down the wave. With the wind in her hair and the sun on her back, riding the wave, even if it can't compare to some in places like California or Hawaii, Mel is perfectly happy.

While some spend the beautiful Summer day at the beach, the boy with blonde ringlets and dimples, not a large fan of heat or swimming, is content to find a cool corner of the library, and read quietly on a comfortable armchair that is near the special showcase on mystery novels that the library has set up, right beside the computers. Typically, Jem dislikes being alone, but even he can make an exception for reading, which is like being surrounded by people in a certain sort of way. He is reading a mystery novel at the moment, not a who-done-it but a how-did-it, which is his preference. These are the novels in which the perpetrator is quite obvious, and almost insignificant. The real fun is finding out how they did it, and what critical slip up they made which allowed the detective, always logical and fiercely intelligent, to catch them.

As a child, Jem had always loved those Encyclopedia Brown books- the ones where the explanation for the answer was tucked away in the back of the book. He used to read them with his father, who was home far more frequently than his busy mother, before bed or simply when there was nothing else to do. They created almost picturesque childhood memories, though more likely or not they had been romanticized by nostalgia or his own tendency towards fondness and dreaminess.

Struck by this nostalgia, and by the end of his book, Jem elects to go in search of these childhood books, crossing the computer section to the children's area. Very few people are in the library today, the majority college students and small children, the latter of whom have been tugged off to some room or another to be entertained until their parents get off work. Thus, at this particular moment, Jem is alone in the children's section, making it a lot easier to go and pick out a few of the books he seeks.

A few minutes later finds him back in the armchair, and struck with the realization that these mysteries were extraordinarily more difficult to crack when he was seven than they are now that he is eighteen. Still, at least one or two of them requires thought, and this manages to justify the unnecessary trip down memory lane. Jem almost wants to steal one of the books to show his father, from whom he inherited his sentimentality. It certainly did not come from his mother's genes, for she is a very practical woman indeed.

Teraton, North Carolina. What. A. Place. It wasn't like it was some crappy little time in the middle of bumfuck nowhere; It was actually a very nice little town and she had been able to buy the cutest little cottage out in the middle of the woods with the most amazing and cute little pond and [as of her arrival] the most beautiful and colorful garden. It wasn't Maui or Los Angeles, but it was still a beautiful home for her. The cottage was green and pretty...small. It wasn't like her last actual home [before prison] where she had the newest and latest in all her appliances. But it was so homey and comfortable and just.... Cozy. That was the word. She had an adorable, cozy apartment. When she arrived, the Uhaul was already there but there was nobody to help her move her things so she spent most of her morning moving things into her new home and trying to find that perfect feng shui, calling on some vines to help her. Perhaps that was one of the good things about being revealed: She didn't have to hide her abilities anymore and she could bring flowers to the world without pretending that it was some sort of special effects or that she was just some sort of epic illusionist. She would bring flowers to the world! Her optimistic nature never failed her.

As the morning soon turned into afternoon, the sun rising higher into the sky, she found herself finished with the arrangement of her home. And with nothing else to really do. She tried to sit for a while and watch some old Gene Kelly movies but she grew restless of that. She moved on to playing some video games but found no joy in that or re-reading her old comic books. She missed Zane. She had never been without her brother since the day that they had met and he had always been her partner in crime. She could make friends without him – Easy peasy. But she had never met another supernatural before and she wasn't exactly sure if they had some super secret government of their own or if there were any foreign rules and regulations. Maybe she was just scared to meet a Vampire and end up getting eaten, assuming that they were all psycho like Russel Edgington. She might just be watching too much True Blood though. She would find these thoughts bouncing around in her head and soon after chastise herself for being both a coward and a bigot.

After a nice shower, she took thirty minutes to turn her honey blonde hair a nice shade of hot pink and another thirty minutes to flat iron it. Today was going to be a pink sort of day, as anyone would see from her apparel; Pink tube top under an unbuttoned pink and black plaid button down with light pink convereses sporting silver spikes and pink embellishments on her daisy dukes. Oh! The joy of being obsessive compulsive about color coordinated fashion. But she hardly spared the time to pick out pink piercings, going for simple black and silver bars and hoops for her left nostril, jestrum, and snake bite holes. It took about two hours of conversing with herself out loud to actually get her out the door, pausing by a mirror to give herself a smile of reassurance. Her parents and Zane would be out of prison in another year - maybe a few months - and her tree would be arriving tomorrow. Not to mention she was going to make some friends today. Yeah. Everything would work itself out.

With the last addition being a charm bracelet with several small wooden charms hanging from it. She was never without it. Ever.

The deep red Rogue was soon parked outside of a small cafe and Lani found herself riding down the sidewalk on a skateboard, her messenger bag slung over one shoulder and a frappuccino in her free hand as she scoped the downtown. To be honest, she had initially thought that the town was going to be like some sort of cult commune where everyone lived in mobile homes and gathered under the light of the moon to discuss a revolution. But she had an extremely overactive imagination and attributed her outlandish ideas of other supernaturals to lack of knowledge on them besides what she'd seen on Supernatural, True Blood, Vampire Diares, The Originals, and Bitten. It wasn't completely her fault that she had no idea what they were like. But it was a normal town and everyone within seemed normal. In her other hand was a video camera that she had held up, intervieweing everyone who caught her eye.

She had made a game out of trying to guess what everyone was and generally turned out positively wrong nine times out of ten. There went her theory that supernaturals had some super cool innate ability to sense each other. Everyone seemed pretty friendly and she soon found herself thinking she had been stupid to be afraid. She soon launched herself into adventure mode and wore a smile on her face, happy to stop and take pictures with people and get their opinions on living in Teraton, spending a bit of time to hold conversations about the pros and cons of supernaturals living in communities of their peers and sympathizers.

After some investigation, she found out that the local public library had a load of comic books and video games ready to check out. Not just new ones like most libraries, but vintage ones. With high hopes of finding Shepherd's Crossing for her PlayStation and possibly even a few Aquaman comics, she followed the directions given to her and soon found herself in front of a rather nice building with a few cars parked outside. Giving a low whistle, she paused to strap her skateboard to her messenger bag and headed inside, the video camera finally turning off and going into her bag. She looked around cautiously, soaking up the look and feel of the quiet building before spotting the video games. Grabbing one of those little plastic baskets that they had for when people had a lot of things to check out, she began grabbing things from the shelves, hardly giving them a second glance until she came across the comics. Aquaman! The tattooed Nymph gave a squeal of delight, hardly caring for the sharp glances she caught as she took off to find somewhere to read with an armful of comics. After setting everything down, she removed her plaid top and plopped onto her stomach into a bean bag, basking in the sunlight while she immersed into the world of Aquaman, kicking off her shoes and humming to herself.

She was content reading about the adventures of the much underappreciated hero that was Aquaman, her head nodding from side to side as she quietly sang The Wheels On the Bus under her breath. For the first time in approximately two years, she was happy and completely calm. All traces of previous paranoia was gone and she didn't fear an enemy to be over her shoulder. But that peace of mind was shattered as she turned the page, sighing at Aquaman's romance. For there, right in the middle of the graphic novel, was a spider. It was hardly bigger than a dime and she could squash it with her pinky easily. But what did she do? Her green eyes went wide and she let out an earsplitting shriek as though someone had just stabbed her in the face. She didn't move, absolutely petrified of the small arachnid in front of her, tears welling up in her eyes as she began to hyperventilate, fanning herself rapidly with her small hands as a knot formed in her chest and she felt the need to vomit coming on.

Jem had simply been continuing to enjoy his trip down memory lane, on which was brief and had various turns as he moved on from one book to another, when a sudden shriek pierced through the air. It appeared to come from a young woman, whose entrance he had not noticed and face he did not recognize, fanning herself rapidly and staring at a book. Instantly he is up, or perhaps not instantly but close enough, rushing over to see what is wrong. A people person at his core, he has no problem going up to try and comfort a stranger- especially one who seems to very upset. "Hey, are you alright, Miss? Is something wrong?" he asks, noting her drastically paled face, almost sickly looking, when he is near enough. He arrives just in time to watch what he had thought to be an image of the comic book, but is in fact a spider of some sort, crawl down the page and onto the girl's lap- a heavily misguided attempt to escape, it would seem.

She had been too petrified to confirm whether or not she was okay when the boy asked and had become even more freaked out when the spider crawled onto her. Even more panic kicked in as she felt it crawl over her belly and she immediately threw herself into a standing position, tears running down her face and smearing her eyeliner now as she wildly began to sweep her body with her hands, unsure where it was anymore, dancing and jumping around as she messed up her hair and nearly fell into a bookshelf, more than once bumping into the guy that had come to her rescue. Even though he did not do a very good job at it. When she saw it fall to the floor, she immediately began to stomp on it. The way she stomped, you'd think that the spider had killed her child or something. Only when it was so crushed that nothing remained did she finally stop. Her hair was a mess, though she was quickly straightening it out by running her fingers through the locks and began to slowly starting to even out her breathing. “You saw that thing attack me, right?! It had murder in its eyes!” She turned to the boy now, straightening out her top as she gave him a pleading look as though she had just bludgeoned a child and was now pleading with a nearby witness to assure that she was in the right.

Before Jem can do anything, the girl had jumped up and screamed, soon launching into a barrage of attacks against the small thing that include catching him in the crossfire, as he is bumped into several times over the course of the insanity. He is helpless to do anything but remain still, dumbfounded, as this stranger completely overreacts to what had been no larger than perhaps a dime. Honestly, she attacks the little thing with such venom and passion that he nearly feels bad for it. There is a point where one crosses the line from killing a bug to committing a cruel and unusual murder. She certainly ensured that the thing is dead, that much is certain. Finally done, the girl turns to him and presents her case, sort of, eyeliner smudged and her entire being in a sort of mess, a state of strange intensity. It takes a moment for words to return to him. "Uh, yeah, sure," he humors her, not really sure what else to say. She looks at him like a madwoman, and he the witness of a crime scene. The librarian has already rushed over to shush them, and with good reason.

She cringed as the librarian gave them stern glares and shushed them, using fingers to indicate that one of them had better clean up the mess of books all over the floor. She issued a groan only to be violently shushed once more. Gesturing with fingers to her lips as if to zip her lips closed, she assured the librarian that she would indeed shut up. Turning to the guy who had run over, she caught her reflection in a blackened computer screen and realized that she must have looked like some kind of psycho to him, reacting to such a small spider. Her face turned bright red as she gave a nervous laugh and pushed some strands of hair from her face, offering out her hand to shake in an attempt to not completely freak him out. “Hiwalani-Noa. Disgraced star, former convict, and deathly afraid of spiders any smaller than a cookie. I swear I'm not crazy.” Smooth. Very good way to recover. She flashed him her best megawatt smile, pink Poincianas blooming in her hair as she relaxed. “I'm so sorry about bumping into you and nearly destroying your eardrums. I didn't bruise you or anything, did I?” Her face expressed a great deal of genuine concern as she looked him over, though she was sure that she hadn't bumped into him that hard. It was polite to check. “Hrm. Also, has anyone ever told you that you are very attractive? Not exactly Hugh Jackman or anything, but definitely got something. Do you have a six pack? Any nice muscles, y'know?” 'Shy' was not in Lani's vocabulary and seeing that he didn't seem hurt, she approved of moving on to expressing her thoughts. She didn't always think before she spoke, but when she did, it was less fun.

Jem rubs the back of his head, apologizing in a string of long, conjoined sentences to the librarian, despite the fact that none of the noise had really been his fault. Had he remained back in his seat, she probably wouldn't have even noticed his presence. But he hadn't, obviously, and consequentially he stands facing a half-mad looking girl as she sticks out her hand and gives the sort of introduction that stamps a clear label on her head: Extrovert. Not that Jem has a problem with this, of course. He's always preferred people like this, with a radiance that draws people like him as a light draws moths. At her promise of sanity, Jem can't help but raise his eyebrow slightly, but a smile of amusement begins to break through, dimples making little dents of curiosity in his cheeks. At her concern, he shakes his head, "I'm-" he begins, but apparently the girl isn't done yet. A bit loquacious, he observes, mentally noting the obvious. Of course, once he processes what she's said, Jem turns bright red. He's not really particularly good with these sorts of things, social or not. Any smooth speech is immediately broken up, leaving him a deer in the headlights. "Um. Not really? I'm Jem, by the way." He sort of skips over her last comment to the best of his ability. "Are you new here or something? I haven't seen you around?" the last bit comes out as a question of sorts.

“Jem. Nice. And people should definitely compliment you more. And yes. I just got out of prison two days ago. Got here today.” Because that made people feel safer. It was a slight blow to her ego to be seen as an unfamiliar face, but she had more than enough ego to spare anyways and simply gave another smile before excusing herself to pick up the books she had knocked over. She was just lucky that the librarian hadn't told her to put her shoes back on and get rid of her frappe.
