Riley Donovan || "The Sound Guy" || 19 || Shapeshifter--subspecies: Black Bear || Straight
Abilities
Can turn into a black bear, and everything being a black bear would entail, basically, but that's about it. Riley is simple man, and down to earth. Bears are common through all sorts of levels and positions in society, and are a very common shifter race, and black bears are one of the smallest of the bears. Black bear families tend to be very much white-picket-fence types, and friendly with the neighbors and everyone around them; they find it easy to get people to like them. They're much, much stronger than their human frame would suggest, especially someone like Riley, who's pretty small in his human form. While most black bears are gentle giants, when finally roused to anger, they go into a rage they have no control over until it subsides, like a Mr. Hyde under the surface of their Dr. Jekyll.
Skills
Extremely good at electronics, knows a lot about audio equipment and instruments. Uses this knowledge at work, doing the sound for live bands at the bar where Tanya does security. His last job was in construction, and is very handy. Good with computers, and makes music electronically and with physical instruments. He's good at keeping his head in volatile situations, which is good because his friend Tanya isn't. Like most bears, he's calm, persuasive and likable to most people. He never went in for sports at all, but in gym class was a pretty good wrestler, back in school. He's good at resolving conflicts between people and seeing both sides of an argument.
Weaknesses
His biggest weakness is that he's cautious literally to a fault. He'll wait-and-see until the moment passes him by, if someone like Tanya isn't around to push him a bit sometimes. He's also a bit lazy and aimless: he's done school, he works at the bar, he enjoys it, and while he knows he can't do it forever, he has no other plans, and no particular aim to to make any. He's pretty much just bumming around. He's not the brightest crayon in the box either, and tends to get set in his ways very firmly and need a big push to even think about changing them.
Fears
Mainly, loneliness. Being lonely is terrible to an extrovert like him. While he would never admit it, despite his large size as a bear, he's actually rather scared of confrontation, which is why he's so dedicated to peaceful solutions. When confrontation is needed, he tends to look to Tanya.
Likes
His job, his crappy little apartment, playing standup bass, his friend Tanya, his family, music and composing, food, drink, parties, video games, being around friends, small animals, wood-working and carpentry. The non-human equality movement
Dislikes
Airplanes, hot weather, being alone, extreme viewpoints, direct confrontation or fighting, when the bands mess up his stage, locking bridges on bass guitars. There's not really a whole lot Riley objects to, he's very laid-back and easy going.
Riley is best described as relaxed. His talks slowly and mellowly, and nothing is ever as much as a problem as you thought it was after you talk to him. He's friendly and easy to talk to, down to earth and humble. He doesn't talk much, but likes listening to other people and thrives on being around others. He's not any traditional idea os the word smart, but he is good at what he does. He's a very simple kind of guy, who likes simple food and good times. The rare times when he isn't with friends having a good time or working, he reads a lot. Contemplative volumes of poetry most people would be surprised to see him interested in. He avoids talking about it. He also builds RC cars and planes to fly in his spare time and fixes computers, and various other applications of all his electronic knowledge. He has very steady hands, something learned from soldering circuit boards, and could probably learn to paint well, but doesn't care to.
He was raised in a very average middle class family, with no strong affiliations to anybody except the people in their neighborhood. They didn't say much when the laws were enacted against them, and were among the many who simply quietly moved to where they were told to go, and there they were in Teraton. It does anger him how people like him are treated by people like them, but he doesn't believe that Tanya's ways are the answer, though he doesn't know how much of that is just his own fear. He does, after all, have a life in Teraton now, one he likes, and so does she, and he wishes she would listen to him and calm the fire in her belly. He's convinced this isn't about the laws anymore, so much as her parents. And he concedes she has a point, but he's a very non-violent person. He worries deeply sometimes that his friend might do something stupid.
Theme Song
