SECRETS
Depression | Started during his early teenage years, but he always did his best to hide it. While it's abated some as he got older, it never completely went away—and when it hits, it hits hard.
A growing addiction to cocaine | Cocaine is one hell of a drug, especially for a wide-eyed seventeen year old thrust blindly into the underground music scene. While his dad always made sure to keep him away from that particular part of the music industry, persistent cajoling from his ex-bandmates eventually pushed him to try it.
He didn't really need it at first, but the pressures of fronting a TV show and his growing frustration at seeing Haven's face plastered across every tabloid out there meant he needed something to help him stay afloat, and coke ended up being that something. He's trying to fight it though, because the last thing he needs is for anyone to find out—especially his sister.

PERSONALITY
Charming, charismatic, and passionate as hell—only a handful of words that viewers and readers alike might use to describe the colourful and highly spirited star of travel blog-turned-TV series, 'A Wandering Irishman'. However, he wasn't always that way, and if asked, the people who know him best will otherwise paint the picture of a thoughtful man—a tad introverted, but generally well-spoken and kind.
He is never one to act based on impulse or strong feeling. Despite the scruffy hair and tattoos, Howell is someone who thrives on structure and order. He doesn't break rules, he makes them. Some might call it a side-effect of being forced to grow up too fast. Well, they're not wrong. He was very different as a child—reckless, as most boys are, and mischievous to some degree—but after his parents' divorce, he decided to change all that. After all, he had a baby sister to raise, and father to take care of; he couldn't allow the family to fall apart. He tried his best to behave. He studied hard, ate his vegetables, and made sure his sister did the same. He also tried his best to care for said sister while his parents were too busy decimating each other in court.
His sister's very important to him, that's for sure. He'd always placed her well-being above everything else. In fact, he's a very different person when Haven's involved. Case in point when he got into a fight with a bunch of paparazzi at age twelve for trying to take his sister's picture while they were at the beach. Many similar incidents would soon follow, with not only the paparazzi, but overly handsy boys ending up of the other side of his fists. Some might call it 'overprotective', but he sees it as nothing more than acting like a good older brother should. Besides, it always pleased his dad to no end, seeing his kid punch the living daylights out of every sleazy fuck who dared breathe in his daughter's direction. And that's another thing that Howell considers important: pleasing his dad.
He struggles to please everyone, really; most often at his own expense. He did the band thing instead of going to college just to appease his dad's surreptitious desire to have a musical child. He sacrificed a good part of his childhood to make sure his sister would grow up in a somewhat stable environment. Even the TV show was largely his dad's doing, because Howell was initially reluctant when the offers came, but his dad pushed and pushed and, well, nobody can say no to Bono. Not even his own kid.
Luckily, he grew to like it. It took maybe two episodes to get him going, but he found his rhythm soon enough and the show—unlike his musical career—took off on a high note. It helped that he liked to explore. Even as a kid, he'd often wander off, and he isn't any different as an adult. Traveling is the only impulse he allows himself to indulge in—whether it be spontaneous road trips to South America, or exploring the depths of underwater caves in Southeast Asia. He can't ever be forced to stay put, and it isn't uncommon to find him in three different continents, all in the span of one week.
Born amidst flashing lights and headlines, it's no surprise that Howell values his privacy. He takes care not to reveal too much of himself to the public, and has a secretive streak that's birthed a penchant for lying. Trust also doesn't come easily for him. He's good with people, sure, and easy to talk to, but he rarely ever lets others see beyond what he wants them to see, and rarer still for him to consider anyone as anything more than just a friend.
