When he was born, they gave him both a Korean name and an English name to help him fit in. His English name became his stage name after he joined Soul.
Jay grew up like a normal American child. His home was very westernized and he was not exposed to the Korean way of living until after his audition to SM. His parents never spoke much Korean at home so that Jay and his sisters wouldn't be confused and not speak English well.
He found a love for dancing at an early age when he saw some street performers breakdancing. Through practice and hardwork, he became a very well known performer in time and was even featured on several local news stations along with his dance crew.
