Maxine, or Max, was raised in a laboratory whose mission was to essentially 'create' a powered person who could be controlled. She was abused and treated extremely poorly for a very long time. She didn't have powers until a nurse made a mistake and gave her the wrong injection. It made max very sick, but afterwards, a creature came to life inside her. Max was very young at the time, so she called it Night Terror. Max and Night Terror share a body, and Night Terror has sworn to protect her at all costs. When Max is in danger, she can summon Night Terror to take over her body and protect her. Night Terror basically appears in different shapes made up of a black tar-like substance, but prefers to look like a black dog the size of a bus. Max and Night Terror unfortunately can't control the body at the same time, because it would be too strenuous and they both would perish. Max escaped with Night Terror's help, and she met the first person who was kind to her. His name was Sam, and he had powers as well. They loved each other dearly, but Sam made the ultimate sacrifice and gave his life to save Max from the lab who wanted to bring her back. Max has been running ever since, and craves justice for herself and her lost lover.
