Reith Arian

"...remember me?"

a character in “Solace”, as played by VitaminHeart

Description

(Image Pending)

Full Name: Reith Arian

Nicknames/Aliases: Rei (To her former Solace friends) The Silver Demon, The Corrupted Solace

Age: 21

Gender: Female

Species: Human...at least she was born human. What she has become is less clear.

Faction Affiliation Bwgan

Rank Commander. Reith appears to display some sort of unnatural control of the bwgan, who seem to treat her almost as a 'Queen' like a hive of bees or a colony of ants. Bwgan appear compelled to protect her and to follow her orders, and seem drawn towards to her. It is unknown why this is, whether it is a conscious effort on Reith's part, or whether it is some other force at work.

Description: Even prior to her change, Reith was quite a distinctive young woman, and tended to looks distinctive among her peers. She seemed quite slender, almost androgynous in her figure, lacking much in the way of curves. She was naturally quite pale-skinned and sensitive to the sunlight. She had high cheekbones and thin lips. She didn't dress provocatively, tending to cover up as much as possible. Most distinctive were her eyes, which appeared a grey-mauve colour, and her hair which was a long, thick mane of silver, reaching down to her lower back. A thick black stripe ran through on the left side. The hair reached down to her lower back, and served as an easy way to pick her out in a crowd.

Now, some months along, as the corrupting influence of the bwgan began to take its toll, she has changed enormously. She appears very underweight and frail in appearance, skin appearing a sickly pale grey sort of hue, with dark purple rings surrounding her eyes. Her lips seem cracked and chapped, her skin blotchy and grazed in many places. Her silver hair hangs in greasy strands, clinging to her face in several places.

More disturbingly it appears her body has begun to change. Her left hand has become a twisted, bony appendage covered in a slimy membrane, the digits tapering into sharp, claw-like points. Her form is patched with a sort of black, sticky substance that resembles bwgan skin, and seems to began in a similar way. Her blood is a bight green colour.

Personality:

Prior to her betrayal, Reith seemed to be a good-hearted, if rather shy and enigmatic individual. She was generally quiet and rather meek, tending to be concerned about offending others. She was quite considerate, and came across as pleasant and kind to those that extended a hand of friendship to her. She was quite close to her team-members, something that made her betrayal all the more shocking.

In the weeks leading up to the murder of the team's mentor, Reith began to act rather strangely. She became progressively more withdrawn and snappy. She started avoiding the others and spending nearly all her time locked in her quarters. It was clear that something was not right, but it was no known just how severe it was until murdered her mentor and took off.

By the time the team set out to combat her, Reith had changed immeasurably. She had lost her mind. While once she had been a compassionate and sensitive young woman, she had become spiteful and malevolent. She displayed a love of carnage and destruction, and a sort of twisted affection towards the bwgan, viewing them as her 'pets'. She seems to gain some sort of twisted joy through the suffering of others. Despite this, she does not appear to have a selfish motive to her horrifying actions. Her behaviour has not benefitted her, leaving her sick and weak, the dark influence slowly destroying her body and mind. She appears to believe herself to be some sort of 'Chosen One' who will bring about a new age.

Her madness extends to her sense of planning and logic. Much of what she says is cryptic, and much of her plans appear to make no sense and follow no pattern of logic. She seems to neglect herself almost completely, rarely eating and almost never sleeping, wearing ragged, filthy clothing despite her status allowing her far better ones.

Skills:

-Dark Magic: Reith is able to manipulate some sort of dark force that appears to be a grotesque parody of Pale Magic. She is able to use it to transform others into bwgan. This is not an easy task however, and requires preparation. She appears to have gained a frightening knowledge of the arcane, and can call upon an assortment of strange spells.

-Bwgan Flesh: Reith appears to be able to manipulate the corrupted tissue within her own body to a frightening effect, using it to seal wounds or form terrifying tendrils and spines. These constructs are quite fragile and easily broken for the mostpart.

Weaknesses:

-Sickness: Reith has been rendered quite unwell by the effects of the corruption on her body, and her neglect of herself. As a result she is not physically strong enough to match up in a physical fight, preferring to let her 'pets' do the legwork for her.

-Madnesss: The corruption has also effected Reith's mind. Her decisions appear to not be based in logic and she appears to make very rash decisions much of the time.

Brief History:

Reith was taken in The Solaces at the age of nine, appearing one day accompanied by two of the existing operatives, though little was said about the circumstances of how she had come to be taken in by the organization. Reith did not speak of it either, and few sort to push the subject. Many would not speak of their backgrounds. A few weeks after that she showed some signs of Pale Magic, and was admitted to the training program.

During training she did not shine, seeming to have quite week and unremarkable abilities, seeming to struggle with most of the exercises, and seemed to blend into the background much of the time. Those friends that she did make she was very close to, and when they were assigned teams, she quickly became quite close to them, seeming to enjoy the thought of fitting in.

However the change in personality began to strike her and she pulled away from them, becoming withdrawn and hostile. She would spend most all the time in her room, and was not eating. The team's member, an older Solace, decided to take her to one side for a private talk, hoping to work out the problem. The next day he was discovered murdered in the woods outside the fortress, a sword plunged right through his heart and deep into the ground beneath him. Several Solaces went to search Reith's quarters and found her gone...and her room in a terrible state. Strange writing was painted over the walls, the bed was torn up and books shredded, and the desk appeared smeared with blood.

Nothing was heard of her for months, but bwgan attacks began to rise...it was then that reports began to come in of the figure known as The Silver Demon, a human who walked amoung the bwgan hordes and commanded them like a Queen, recognizable by her long, silver hair. It was realized, as investigations were made, that her and Reith were one and the same.

So begins...

Fray suddenly had this odd urge to go to the tower on the cliff. The 'Terror Tower' as she called it. Sure enough, as she turned, all her fellow Bwgan were heading in that direction. She had heard of the corrupted solace had moved in there, but she thought it might be false leads by actual solaces. Although she couldn't resist. She followed the others toward the Terror Tower. When she got closer, she noticed Bwgan, mindlessly fixing the place. Her Bwgan went straight to work, and curious, she climbed the tower.

Her paws padded up the stairs, and her spiky fur scent screeching sounds echo down the stairwell as it brushed against the walls. She swished her tail back and forth. She noticed several markings on the walls. She finally reached the top and almost gasped. There it was. The corrupted Solace. The reason she was even here. This Solace deserved respect, and the rightful word of: Master. Although she herself, viewed her self as a leader amongst the Bwgan, she truly looked up to this Solace. She grinned. What was this evil solace planning? Her thoughts trailed off to evil imaginative thinkings, but then she shook her head and regained attention. She walked forward, but didn't make much sound, because the solace was clearly concentrating. She lowered herself to the ground and bowed her head. This would be her Master now. She would do anything this corrupted solace said. "I offer you my service," She said, respectfully but also proudly, as if she was proud to be able to do this.

The proximity of Gull had became a visage painted straight from Hell itself. Never had such a great amount of bwgan gathered together and worked in such an organized and constructive (yet terrifyingly so) manner. It was like a circle of the abyss had been transported to surround the town, trapping and condemning it. More surprising was the fact that the townspeople had yet to suffer any casualties. In this world, where meeting a bwgan usually meant dying, the notion of a town in which one had only to gaze out their window to spot at least ten of these hellish creatures in the distance was unfathomable. Certainly, there had to be a great power at work to keep their aggressive and murdering instincts from acting up on the poor civilians, who still failed to understand how they were still alive. So far, only one person had gathered the courage to try and break through the circle of bwgan and rumor had it he had been attacked during his escape. Whatever mysterious force controlling the creatures was, it obviously didn't intend to let the town free that easily.

Despite the organized circular path that the bwgan had followed around the town, there were still times when one of them would enter the urban area and even walk around the buildings for one reason or another (sometimes they took materials from the citizens, but they hadn't attacked them so far). At those times, the tension turned so dense it became hard to breathe and the weaker of heart would even fall to their knees and cry. Unfortunately, this would prove to be one of those dreadful days, as the figure of a tall man clad in dark grey skin and spikes protruding from his back had ventured in the center of the town. He carried two logs roughly three times his size on his back with as much effort as a normal person would display from carrying a teen pig, and his fully white eyes scanned the area with ominous apathy. Considering the creature already had materials for the tower on his self, one could only wonder what Ged, The Grey-skinned Bwgan, was seeking in the fear-filled Gull.

Suddenly noticing something that drew his attention, the High bwgan changed the direction of his path and dropped the large logs in front of a store. Unexpectedly, rather than destroying the place down, he gently opened the door and entered, even going through the trouble of trying not to damage the door with the dangerous-looking spikes on his back. Inside the store, three people, including the clerk, looked back at him from the ground with wide eyes and expressions that seemed the very picture of terror. Upon confirming his presence, one of the men lowered his head to the ground, covering it with his hands and crying in desperation; the other man simply kept staring at Ged, too afraid to say or do anything, while the store clerk was the only one who managed to remain on her feet, albeit completely frozen. The bwgan thought to himself that the reaction was only natural; in fact, most likely all of the townspeople were like this, hiding inside their houses until he decided to leave the village.

Completely ignoring the terror in their faces, Ged walked up to the counter with slow and calm steps, which only served to further enervate the shoppers. Once he was standing at less than a meter from the store clerk with only a wooden table separating them, she finally seemed to be snapping as the demon-like bwgan looked down on her with his white eyes. She still couldn't get her body to move, but her eyes began to shed tears and her expression suggested she might as well have seen a meteor falling on her. There was no way she could have seen the next instance coming. Again with vague movements, Ged reached to one of the sides of his garments and pulled out a bota bag, which he dropped on the counter in front of her.

"Fill this with honey... please", he ordered in a calm manner which only served to further confuse the clerk. It had been a long time since he talked to humans in a casual manner, so he had to force himself to remember to say 'please'.

There was no instantaneous response; the store clerk remained static, gazing at the leather bag as if she hadn't understood what to do with it. When she realized she was making him (a bwgan) wait, she quickly took the bota bag and disappear under the counter to look for the honey. The silence and tension remained even after Ged had received his honey-filled bag, paid for it, took the logs on his back again and left in the same way he had appeared.

This is why no other member of his species managed to understand him; Ged was such a whimsical and unpredictable creature that he sometimes would appear like a walking set of contradictions. Despite his actions, he actually disliked humans (in fact, the money he had used to pay for the honey was most likely from one of his victims), but to him that didn't mean he should massacre, rob and torment them without a reason. Even if that reason was something as meaningless as finding them annoying, so long as he had one that was enough, and that was what differentiated him from his siblings. True, it had earned him an infamous reputation even among his own species, but he was at a point in his life in which he was no longer willing to let his actions be dictated by a majority consisting of mindless beasts. Besides, not like it made any difference, but ever since the appearance of the Corrupted Solace and the moment he started hanging around her, the other Bwgan began to tone down their criticism towards him, as if they feared he would influence her. For his part, Ged didn't understand the reasoning behind that fear; he was well aware that, to the Corrupted Solace, he was simply another bwgan who happened to appear around her quite often. The time he had spent following her had only served to further confirm this time and again: regardless of a bwgan's shape, age, power or intelligence, they were all trained dogs to her eyes. The most any of them could hope to achieve was to be considered more useful than the rest, which was as pitiful as it sounded. However, that had been an established fact from the get-go to Ged, and he didn't care what rank he was given so long as he got to serve her. He had his own reasons, and even if the Corrupted Solace's mind distorted beyond recognition time and again until none of whatever sanity she had ever had was left, it would all be well so long as he could still follow her.

Nonetheless, he had to admit that it had gotten boring ever since they had arrived in Gull. All he and the vast majority of other bwgan did all day was transport construction materials from one place to another, all for a ritual that (evidently) none of them had been filled in about. He no longer got to wander aimlessly like always and, while he wouldn't change his situation, he no longer got to meet any interesting individuals anymore. Only a few of the bwgan there even had the ability to talk, and none had anything interesting to say. The only High bwgan in the tower aside from himself was Fray, who didn't seem to have a very developed mind (which wasn't unbecoming of her, considering she was nine years old) and usually rambling on about evil. As if something as basic as good or evil existed in a grey world like this one. He actually didn't mind her childish vision of the world nor the fact that calling herself 'evil' gave away how rotten she was on the inside, but he did find her lack of work in the tower annoying. Even at that moment, she was probably jumping around, eager to kill Solaces or anything while the rest of them built the tower. 'You'd think dogs would be good at finding sticks', he would usually think to himself while carrying the large logs to and from the tower. As entertaining as she could be for short-term conversations, when he imagined what it would be like to babysit her, he suddenly felt exhausted.

Now that he had been working for several hours, he was about to finish his daily amount of work and had earned a rest, so his main concern at that moment was on what to do next. He would probably be issued another job from the Corrupted Solace the moment he finished his work either way, though. As he pondered on exactly what to do once he dropped the logs in the tower, he opened the bota bag with his free hand and sipped on its contents. He grunted in a displeasing manner; the honey was far too sour. Lamenting that he hadn't bought sugar while he was still in town, he silently continued along his path.

Fray nodded to her new Master. The Solaces will come here. And then she will play a little trick on their minds. One by one she would make them see awful things. Terrible things. Things that would make them have nightmares at night. They would scream and beg for mercy. But she wasn't known for mercy. It was to bad she couldn't trick more than one mind at a time. Although, she could trick a whole crowd of Bwgan because their minds were so weak. She turned back to her Master

"When the blood of a pale mage stains the alter of the Stork's Tower, the dark wind shall blow and the bwgan's ruler shall receive untold power."

The words coming from her Master seemed to float toward her and enter her mind. The words bounced around and she grinned. It was beautiful. Her Master would rule, and the world will be perfect. She couldn't wait to get started. She turned to her Master. "What can I do to assist you, Master?"

Jonathan looked up. Following her gaze, he observed his cluttered room yet again.
"Not really but I do a lot of research. I'm..." He contemplated whether it would be ok to tell her then nodded to himself. "I'm trying to discover new ways to use pale magic. Or, more specifically, how I can improve my...problem." He hoped she realized that he was talking about his power giving out occasionally. No one in the group knew about why it really happened, and he wanted it to stay that way. At least for a while.
"Plus these are all copies of my older letters and reports. I'm on top of everything else."
"Kinda..."

Making his way along the almost unnoticeable path in between the messy piles of books and reports on the floor he made it to the bed. Gesturing for her to take the seat he started.
"When the man got here he was badly injured. Practically dead. He would have died if everyone hadn't gotten here in time." Jonathan tried to find the best way to describe what was to come next.
"Just before everyone else appeared, he said something to me. 'Bwgan. Tower. Send help.'" He shook his head and stood up, knocking pile of letters down. He cursed and starting picking them up and stacking them neater. After he had neatened up the first, it seemed right to start neatening up the ones around it.

"Ordinarily I would just send some of the team out to deal with the Bwgan because I'd assume they were just a few lower level bwgan but with the condition that he came in... It can't be anything good. There's also the fact that I've been having a really bad feeling the last few days. It's felt like something terrible was going to happen and I won't be able to stop it. I know it's just me being paranoid but..." Jonathan looked over his work and smiled. After neatening up stacks of paperwork and books around the bed he stood up and sighed.

"You're probably wondering why I chose to speak to only you about this. Not only are you the second in command, you are also the person I trust the most. Which is why I need you to keep this next part between only us." Jonathan looked to the door and lifted a hand. Sending a small pulse of telekinetic energy, it clicked closed. He flexed his fingers out at the door and a barrier that would at least muffle sound formed around it.
"I..." He took a deep breath, swallowed his fears and finished.
"I think it's Reith."

Fray waited patiently for her Master to answer. Her Master seemed absorbed in her work so she decided to leave her to her work. "I will just help on construction, but if you ever need me for anything, I'm always here." Fray said, and started to head downstairs. But then she stopped with an idea. "There is just something I want you to know I can do." Fray stepped forward. "Please don't be alarmed or angry." Fray then concentrated and sent a green insect to her book, eating at it. More insects appeared and swarmed around her, getting bigger, and dripping green ooze. Vicious wolves appeared and stalked toward her. Seeing the surprised, and somewhat alarmed face of her Master, she made it all disappear. "I can show people fears. I can also read fears, But for whatever reason, I can't pick up what your deepest fear is." She furrowed her brow in concentration. No matter how hard Fray tried, she couldn't get a distinct fear from her Master. "Although this has limits. I can only do it to one, maybe two people at a time, depending on how strong or week the mind is. For example, I had difficulty showing that to you, it was very exhausting." Fray nodded to her Master and headed back down the stairs. "I will leave you to your work."

Fray hopped down the stairs. She almost ran directly into that strange Bwgan. What was his name? Jod? Gid? Gee? Jed? Ged. Ged, that was it. Ged intrigued her. He wasn't exactly like other Bwgan. He had a strong mind, not as strong as her new Master, but still strong. He also acted different from other Bwgan. Not as ravenous. In a way she sort of admired him, like the big brother she never had. But in other ways, she thought him strange, and pointless. For example, his behavior when getting supplies from the town. He paid for them! Me? I would just be like, give me all your wooden planks or I kill everyone of your children and leave you broken hearted. She looked up to him, carrying logs. She would offer to help him, but she wasn't the type to help, without getting something in return. Although, she would gladly obey her Master. She sighed. "need help?" The words practically stung in her mouth. Help. She grabbed a log in her mouth. And trotted beside Ged. Why was she being nice? She didn't normally be nice. But Ged wasn't like other Bwgan.
