By the time Johnny had turned 13, his parents became and more and more scarce at home. This was because both of his parents' careers took off and with him getting older, they imagined he could handle their absence. With his mother's restaurant chain, "The Cellar" moving into the West Coast, keeping her busy and travelling all the time, and his father being appointed to Head Administrator of the hospital he'd spent most of his medical career at, Johnny become mostly left up to his own devices.

Things changed drastically, however, shortly after Johnny turned 15. One night during a bad snow storm, the few that ever actually happened in Alabama, his parents were in an accident. While his mother survived with minor injuries, his father died on impact with their car being struck on his side. For the next few months, he and his mother spent a lot of time together, mourning their loss together and just taking a break from the world.
