She is still scared, though, as she does not know how she will do against strong opponents. She knows how to take care of herself in the wilderness. Serafina shivered as she stood among the other girls from her district. The crowd of children were whispering nervously. She knew her district was supposed to be a career district, but recently their children had not been training. Parents would refuse to believe their children would be the ones to be picked out. She looked up; a woman with a hairstyle much like a bee's nest was making a long speech about the Hunger Games. She smiled and clapped her hands together. She tottered over to the reaping bowl in her 5-inch heels and stuck her hand in. She pulled out a name; grinning cheerfully, unaware how unhappy the crowd was.

"Serafina Hayes!" she called.

Serafina's blood ran cold. She clenched her jaw and squeezed her fists into tight balls. She could feels the stares burning into her back as she marched up to the stage. Once up on the stage, she glanced out; wondering if anyone would be kind enough to volunteer. She stared them down; challenging them to volunteer. The only sympathy she recieved was blank looks. The woman tilted Serafina's chin up.

"Aren't you a pretty one? We have a nice hoard of pretty little girls for our games this year." she cackled.

Serafina did her best not to cry, not to scream and not to choke the annoying woman. She looked down. She heard the name of the male tribute being called and loud foot steps as he came to join her. The reaping ended, and the woman marched them off into their private rooms. Serafina sat delicately on a chair in her room and looked up when she saw the door open. She looked away when she saw who it was.

"Darling, Serafina." she heard her mother say.

Serafina looked up, shocked. Darling. Her mother had never called her that before.

"We wanted to say... that we're sorry. The only reason we shunned you was because you were so perfect, so unlike us." said her mother.

Serafina's look did not soften.

"Go, go away." Serafina whispered.

Her mother came closer. So did her brother and father.

"But, darling, we truly are sorry!" her mother said.

Serafina jumped up from her seat.

"If you expect me to forgive you, after all those years of torture, all those years of fending for myself, not being able to trust, love, care or even make ONE SIMPLE FRIEND, well; you really need to wake up. No, mother. No amount of care will change my mind. None." Serafina shouted.

Her family scampered out the door, never having witnessed Serafina lose control before. Serafina collapsed into a heap on the floor, weeping.

"What have I become?" she whispered.

Serafina stood in the training centre, pondering what to work on. She knew some of the careers had been watching her as she impressed even the trainers with her knowledge of surviving in the wilderness. Serafina strode towards the knife throwing station. She picked up a knife and hurled it towards a dummy. It landed just below the chest. She threw again, this time the knife landed in the head. Suddenly, a large object swung down from the ceiling. She jumped over it in one swift movement and landed on her feet. She smiled as she saw a few of the tributes look at her. A trainer glanced over at her, too.

"Nice work, the boulder is used to train your reaction time. Your aim needs work, though." he said.

Serafina nodded and walked over to him. She knew she would never be as good as the careers, but she could try.

~~~
Serafina heard her name. She walked into the room, the judges staring at her curiously; as if she was a foreign species. She glared at them. She heard them mutter unhappily but she kept her chin up. She knew what to do. She ran to the traps station and tied up a basic noose. She set up a dummy a few paces from her trap. She grabbed a knife, then bounded up a pretend tree in a few leaps. From there, she threw the knife into the back of the dummy, causing it to fall into the trap. Serafina then jumped down from the tree in one leap and nodded at the judges. The judges nodded back. She knew the careers before her had set the bar high, and her performance was far from perfect. But she walked out, determined, if she had to die to do it, to prove that her brains could triumph over the careers skills.
Jemi leaned foward in her seat as she turned on the televison. It was the moment so many were waiting for. How had they done? Who was worth sponsoring? It was nerve wracking and exciting at the same time. Desperately, Jemi hoped that JiYong and Hadrian had done well. If they wanted her father's support, it was crucial they perform well. Then the moment was there.
"Now the moment you've all been waiting for.." An anouncer smiled widely, showing off pearls for teeth. Ridiculous. Her hair was a swirl of fiery colors.. yellow, orange, red.. and pink. The sight was ghastly. Jemi wished she'd just get on with it.
"District 1 tributes, JiYong Ashton Kwon scored an excellent score of 11." Anouncer Lily smiled and winked. "Hadrian Allardyce, scored 10 points from our dear judges." Jemi let out the breath she was holding. Good. They were good.
"District 2 tributes, Ian Smith achieved 9 points and Mallory Foster scored 11 points!" Lily patted her hair and glanced down at her note cards. "District 3's Logun Bell has 4 points and Thalia Cronin has been awarded 6 points."
Jemi was surprised that Thalia had managed to score at all. She was such a young, tiny thing. Apparently there was more than what met the eye. she pondered this for a moment and turned back to the screen just in time for...
"Seraphina Hayes from District 4 has achieved 7 points." Jemi nodded and was about to watch some more when her father came up the stairs.
"Yes, Daddy?" Jemi raised and eyebrow and muted the sound for a moment.
"Did you see JiYong's score?" he asked rowdily and Jemi nodded. "Phenomenal!" Then he lumbered out as his friends called to him. She rolled her eyes and switched on the sound. She had missed a couple of the districts.
"District 6's male tribute Leo Jackson scored 9 points and the female tribute, Lara Barkely, was deemed 5 points."
Then Jemi got up to stretch a little. She had been so tense before, still was actually. Then next few districts scores were pretty low and Jemi felt really bad for them. It didn't really matter if they were just waiting to show their strengths in the arena. The sponsers made most of their judgements on the training scores. Poor kids...
"District 11 tribute, Tommy Wong, has scored 10 points and the female tribute scored a 3." Lily the anouncer flashed her pearls at the camera and cleared her throat.
"Now for the last district, but not the least, male tribute Ryan Duncan scored 4 points while Evelyn Wynter managed to get 8 points!" Lily threw up all the notecards and stood, clapping enthusiastically. "There you have it folks, those are the training scores for the 76th Hunger Games. Stay tuned... and may the odds be ever in your favor."
That was that. Jemi put her head down on a pillow and tried not to think about the ones who had scored under five. The odds weren't in their favor, now was it?
Serafina acted fast. Launching off her square, she headed straight for the the nearest mountain; grabbing along the way a dark red backpack dangling from a rope, a sleeping bag and a small medical kit. She heard someone snarl behind her, she had taken some good supplies. She saw an arrow being shot at her, but she reacted quickly. Serafina got down low on the ground and began to crawl quickly through the snow. She did her best to ignore the screams as tributes were killed or injured. She finally reached the mountain and darted behind it. Blood stained the pure white ice and a few bodies lay on the ground. Serafina glanced away. She could not dwell on the misfortune of others. Still, she hoped that the little girl from district 3 had gotten away safely. She was too young to die. She had also gotten an OK score, and may make a good ally if times got tough. Serafina shook her head. What was she thinking? An ally? She had always been a lone wolf, friends were never an option. She started to make her way away from the cornucopia. She wondered what was in her pack, but it was too risky to open it yet. Footsteps. Someone was following her. She turned. No, she must have been imagining it. But she was still unsure. Serafina sat down for a moment to rest. She decided to venture a little further before dark. She ran to the next closest mountain, it was not far. She then dug a hole, which unless you were looking down at her, would be safe from the other tributes. She curled up in her sleeping bag with her pack close to her. She could still not shake off the feeling someone was watching her, though she knew it was probably just the gamemakers, watching them, day and night. Serafina did not know what she was going to do next, where she was going next, or who she should be wary of. All she knew was she could stay awake no longer. She heard the anthem play faintly, and the cannon shots for the dead tributes. She did not hear the exact number, though she could say it was at least a few of them. And then she fell asleep.
Leo gasped for air, as the countdown from 25 began and the cold air bit the back of his throat. This wasn't supposed to be the case! The rebellion was supposed to keep this torture from ever occurring again!
20...
And yet, here he was standing on a pedestal landmines all around and no other choice but to fight or death.
18...
He knew his chances were one in twenty four but he promised himself and his family that he would come back to them.
17...
He would win for them!
16...
He would win
15...
He was fast, he knew he could at least get something before the bloodbath truly got under way.
10...
Oh God, Here we go!
9...
he needed the sleeping bag
8...
7...
He could get the backpack but it was risky
3...
2...
1...
"Welcome to Liberty Province! Let the games begin!"
He was off the platform and running towards the sleeping bags before the others had even begun to move, he saw both tributes from district one leap off the pedestals a fraction of a second afterwards. three strides more and he was closing in on the sleeping bag, slowing only ever so slightly to grab a corner and pull the bag toward him.
shit! I'm waving a freaking red flag! He thought as he ran, the sleeping bag billowing out behind him as he proceeded, getting closer and closer to the pit.
It was odd, to see so few weapons around, and yet, he knew there had to be a catch, what game maker wouldn't encourage the bloodbath?
Leo noticed how quickly the girl from district 4 was moving, he saw her duck and as an arrow was shot at her and how quickly she grabed one of the bags that were hanging into the abyss.
He was at the rope, dropping to his knees he pulled the backpack up hand over fist as fast as he could.
Long years of coiling brake fluid lines for the trains came in handy, and in three short seconds he had a neat coil of cordage in his hands and the backpack in his lap.
One of the tributes was running at him now a murderous glare in his eyes, hugging the backpack and the sleeping back to him he yanked the stake that was holding the bag out of the frozen ground and with only feet between him and the crazed tribute he rolled backwards and out of the way, and with a sickening feeling he watched as the tribute backpedaled but couldn't stop his forward momentum and fell into the abyss, his roar of confrontation changing to a scream of terror.
With glassy eyes Leo pushed himself back onto his feet and ran from the scene.
Seeing a particularly thick stand of trees he made a b-line for it dodging a few knives that were thrown his way as he picked up his pace until he was running full out at a dead sprint.
He made the edge of the forest in a few short seconds and left the scene of the cornucopia behind.
This arena was cold, too cold for his liking, and dangerous beyond belief. He hoped the backpack had something good in it as he began trudging through the woods and towards the mountains ahead.
The sky held no light and this confused Leo greatly, the shadows beneath the trees were inky black and anything, absolutely anything could be lurking. He wanted to be as far from the cornucopia as he could get. He had heard of packs of wild wolves running in the north of his district and this appeared to be what he imagined the country up there to look like. The first thing he needed to do was find shelter and disguise himself so that he would be less visible in the stark black and whiteness of this arena.
Day 1
The time had run out and every tribute had burst off of their spot as quickly as they could, many ran to the center, others away from the cornucopia. Within the first twenty minutes of the day six were killed. All of Districts 5 and 10, and the male from 3, and female from 9. That meant that only eighteen were left. The odds were bad that many would wake up in the morning. Only two of the tributes had sleeping bags, few had water, and there was no way of knowing who would risk making a fire to keep warm. So far, there were no alliances, so there would no way for anyone to watch out for one another while they slept. When the girl Mallory had run away with her backpack, the boy named Ian had reached out and grabbed at her, tearing her backpack, but she had gotten away. Her things had stayed in her backpack for a while but it caught on a branch and tore open slightly more, letting a sleeping bag, gloves, and a light jacket to tumble out at different distances [at least 100 yards apart], but the girl had either not noticed, or not cared enough to pick them up as she went. They lay on the ground for anyone to get, but it would be hard for them to know they were there unless they had seen them fall out because of the snow beginning to cover them.
The sky was getting darker as it got later, and the cold was getting ever colder. The snow hadn't let up, and on the contrary it had gotten stronger. There was at least 2 feet of snow everywhere you looked, and the dead trees didn't provide any shelter from the falling snow. The clouds in the sky didn't part to allow any of the moons light to come through, so it was almost pitch black, save for a few stars that poked through and provided minimal amounts of light. It would be difficult to get any amount of warmth throughout the night time.
The ground was hard and cold, and the dead trees did not seem sturdy enough for any of the tributes to climb, but any that traveled far enough from the cornucopia would find some relief from the troubles they faced as it was. But it was a long journey, and most of them didn't have enough water to travel that far, so they would have to wait until they found a water source.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The District 8 female tribute Lia Brin had traveled as far as she could, many miles into the woods, trying to get as far away from the cornucopia as she could, but had begun to get too tired and dehydrated. She thought for a moment, then bent down, cupping her hands into the snow then put snow in her mouth. She was instantly gratified to have the melted snow in her mouth, and as she continued to drink her vision dimmed, and she began to shake. It was poisonous to intake it, and she just realized it. Her eyes watered as she began to cry, and then began to tremble with fear. It took mere minutes for her to take her last breath, her last thought was that of her family and her district. Another tribute, District 7's male tribute Edwin Green, mere feet away from her watched from a distance and had done the same before he had seen her die and closed his eyes as he accepted his death.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The night was finally here, and each tribute was in their own place.
There was complete silence, then the anthem played. Then;
One cannon shot...
Two...
Three...
Four...
Five...
Six...
Seven...
Eight...
All together sixteen tributes left. Who would be the next?
Serafina opened her eyes. It was darker than before, she suspected it was still night. Well, it's better to be creeping around now, hopefully everyone's asleep she thought. The girl sat up. What was she thinking? Why did she head for the mountains? Why didn't she head for the forest at the beginning? She sighed. She then remembered her backpack, and got it out of her sleeping bag. She unzipped it, revealing the contents. At the top was a thin jacket and a pair of gloves. Serafina slipped them on immediately, any extra warmth would do her good in this cold. Underneath the clothing was a flashlight and a little food and water. She was about to put her medical kit and sleeping bag in her pack, when something at the bottom caught her eye. She pulled it out out her pack. They were a pair of night vision glasses, a rare item in the arena. Serafina thanked her lucky stars and put them on. Her surroundings then became clearer. She put all her belongings into her pack, and began to walk in the direction of the forest.
Not long after, Serafina heard two cannon shots, one after the other. She wondered if they had fought each other, then both died fighting. Serafina soon got thristy. She slid off one of her gloves and scooped up a handful of ice. She sniffed it, just to make sure no dirt or animal urine had contaminated it. The snow smelt strange, and slightly familiar. Serafina's blood ran cold when she remembered the smell. The ice was poisoned, she knew it. All district 4 children knew that smell, the smell of a poisoned fish. They had to learn it, to be sure a fish was fine to eat. Serafina dropped the ice, she would drink a little from her water bottle and drink fresh water when she got the chance. She continued her journey towards the forest.
Serafina arrived soon after. She began to walk into the forest, her night vision glasses guiding her. She heard a twig crackle in the distance. She followed the noise, as it could be an animal, leading her to food or a water supply. She soon realized she was following footprints. She shook her head. How stupid can you get? Those footprints are as clear as day! I might not be able to fight well, but at least I have the sense to cover up my footprints! she thought. She stopped. What if the footprints led towards a career? Should she tell them she was from district 4, and they should team up with her as district 4 was usually a career district? She decided to keep following the footprints, she had the edge, she could run away if needed. After a while, Serafina found she was following two sets of footprints. Would there be two of them? Against all her instincts, she kept walking. The footprints led towards a nearby tree, and under the tree stood a boy of about 16 or 17. She remembered him from the scoring, he was from district six. I could kill him easily and quietly she thought. Daggers hung from his belt, Serafina only then realized she had no weapons. She looked around desperately. A thick, dead branch lay on the ground near her. She snuck towards it, trying hard to not make a sound. She grabbed it and started to creep towards him. He was staring up into the tree.
"Hello?" he whispered.
Even though he only spoke in a whisper, Serafina was directly behind him, and she had not been expecting it. Serafina let out a scream; high-pitched and eerie in the mostly quiet night. The boy turned in suprise and shock. Serafina took off like a speeding bullet. She dropped the branch and ran. She did not think that she might be leaving footprints, or that he might throw his dagger at her, all she cared was that she got away, and fast.
Lara looked up as someone whispered, "Hello?" She was about to quietly slip aay, when someone screamed. "Ah, shit!" Lara hissed as she tumbled from the branch in surprise. She landed on her back, and gave out a small groan. Seeing the boy at the base of the tree, and the girl that had just sprinted off, she quickly jumped to her feet. Then she noticed the footprints. God, she was stupid. At least the snow seemed to be already covering them up.
She turned to the boy, and noticed the dagger in his hand. Why hadn't he just killed her wihout saying hello? It would have made much more sense.
Lara just stood there, not sure what to do. She felt like she couldn't move her feet, even though it was probably the smartest thing to do. She gave the boy a weak smile, and managed to take a small step backwards. Well, her feet were working again. Would he just throw the dagger if she ran now? She slipped amatch out of the box. She wasn't really sure what she would do, but ifhe did try try hurt her, she would want some form of a weapon.
Serafina ran. And ran. And ran. Why did she do that? She couldn't take him on, he was taller AND probably stronger than her. She finally stopped when she could not hear anyone coming after her. Serafina gasped for breath, she had run at least a mile. She collapsed on the icy snow. It was tempting her, she could imagine it now; cold, refreshing snow to cool her hoarse throat. But she coudn't. She had to stay alive, for.... well, herself. She got an idea. She built a mound of the snow, at placed her water bottle in the centre. Just like a cool freezer. Once she was satisisfied, she pulled out her water bottle and drank a few mouthfuls. Serafina applauded herself for her idea. But now she was cold. She shivered, and decided to find a place to spend the rest of the night. She found a tree, whose branches were strong and thick and could hold her up easily. She climbed it easily and curled up into a ball to sleep.
"Arrrgh!" cried Serafina.
Light blinded her as she realized she had her night vision glasses on in the day. She took them off and stuffed them into her bag. She quickly realized she probably alerted everything in the area that she was there. She did a quick scan of the area and jumped down from the tree. She then realized she had no plans whatsoever about where to go. She stood there thinking about where to go next. She thought about how she could have used some backup when she was trying to kill that boy. She smiled. She needed an ally. But who? The careers? They could probably tell by the look of her she wasn't one of them. That boy and whoever was in the tree? No way, she tried to kill them. The little girl from district 3 she pitied? Maybe, if times got tough. Then, it came to her. She had to find her district partner. What was his name again? Kaiden? Yes, that was it. She saw him at the bloodbath, he was tall, strong-looking and as much as Serafina didn't want to admit, very good-looking. She knew he would still be alive, he would have smelt the poison, and he looked strong enough to take on a rhino with no trouble at all, let alone a puny tribute. She hoped with all her heart he had not joined the careers, so she would not have to join them herself. Serafina breathed in heavily. She would just have to look for him.
