a character in “The Chains That Bind”, as played by Cienpher

Description

Image
Feine Haleseer

Nickname:
None that he approves of, but some people are just insistentā€¦

Age:
19

Personality:
It seems that ever since he died, Feine is having difficulty associating with the living. Conscious of his new nature, he is a little too wary. He fears making close relationships with those still alive, and finds it easier now to speak with spirits and the like rather than mortals ā€“ although he is still wary of the reapers. For this reason, his parents have labeled him difficult and his friends have drawn away from him. He thinks it a necessary change. After all, if he wants to continue his apprenticeship as a reaper, heā€™s going to have to outlive them. Someday, Feine might even be the one to ferry them to the afterlife. He isnā€™t sure if he can handle that.

Feine was always of the subtly sarcastic type, someone who wasnā€™t afraid to be blunt when he deemed it necessary, but there used to be a humor to his words. Now those who knew him notice thereā€™s a slight bitterness beneath it all. Because of this, the once slightly difficult to approach character has become unapproachable, distant, and cold. When pressed too hard about his sudden change in nature, his words move before his wit and he automatically pushes them away.

Something else to note is that Feine is resistant to change, preferring to keep things the way they are mostly because he is poor at adapting to newer conditions. Thus, his decision to sign the contract with the reaper surprised even him. Why did he sign that contract? Lingering attachment to life? He still isnā€™t sure, but he knows now that he change his mind. Someone needs to protect the people and spirits alike, and now that he knows, he feels that he canā€™t turn their back on them. When he finds something that he can do to help, he will do it. Such is his strange sense of obligation, the same one that got him killed. Perhaps his unwillingness to change is in regard to himself as well. His new reaper nature confuses him and makes him insecure. Only timeā€¦ a lot of time, will be able to help him adjust.

However, heā€™ll learn to live with it. After all, he has a long, long life ahead and all the time in the world to adapt. In a sense, Feine is still young, and with that youth comes a distorted sense of arrogance. He strongly dislikes being ordered about and despises being regarded as weak. He is sure to retort to any insult thrown at himā€¦ but as many youths, such a pride is merely a cover of ignorance to hide his insecurity. He is young and inexperienced compared to these reapers. One false move and he could die again. One mistake and he might lead the dead to a fate worse than death. His new life and his old life collide to painfully tax his mental and emotional strength.

It always took Feine a little while to warm up to people, and now it takes even longerā€¦ and even after he does, his callous tone is unlikely to change. He is, simply put, quite the difficult personality, now grown worse after his encounter with these strange supernatural happenings. He merely continues on, hoping to bring peace to the spirits and safety to the mortal world.

What was life like before you died? Feine was settling into a city university far from home, planning to major in some kind of science. He had neither interest nor belief in the supernatural at all, much to his elder sisterā€™s dismay. Although he cared for his parents and had a good relationship with them, it was his sister whom he was closest to, no matter how much he denied it. She always knew what to say to make him open up. In fact, the university he was attending was her alma mater. He did well academically and tried hard, although some professors didnā€™t care for his attitude. He was indifferent to most of his peers save for a few close friends, both male and femaleā€¦ of course, all this was before he died.

How did you die?
Feine wasnā€™t exactly a social butterfly, but he had a close circle of friends. One of such friends wasnā€™t exactly the most responsible guy in the world. Whereas Feine obeyed the rules and held honor and virtue high on his priorities, this ā€˜friendā€™ was anything but such. Even the most respected universities have the occasional bad moment, and one of such moments was an off-campus party sponsored by some of the more conceited upperclassmen. It wasnā€™t really something Feine enjoyed, but since many of his friends were going, he tagged along. Immediately he regretted his decision when he saw the alcohol, served to even those still underage, and ridiculous games that could be called little more than gambling. He would have left too, if it werenā€™t for the fact that he saw his irresponsible friend, drunk and staggering, following similarly intoxicated others to the roof. Concerned and exasperated, Feine chose to follow them and drag his friend back home. However, once there, a simple attempt at persuasion became an argument. An argument became a scuffle, and Feineā€™s friend, unsteady on his feet, nearly tumbled over the railing of the roof. When Feine reached out to help, his friend lashed out in his drunken rage, effectively clipping Feine on the jaw. The nineteen, soon to be twenty year old boy fell over the railing, and effectively fell several stories down to his death.

Reaper Uniform:
N/A

Individual Power:
Fade ā€“ for a limited amount of time and at the expense of a copious amount of energy, Feine can ā€˜fadeā€™ his presence, allowing physical objects to pass through him. However, he is still not used to this ability and doesnā€™t rely on it all too much. After all, it wouldnā€™t do him any good to run out of energy and get caught in a wall.

Give and Take ā€“ unlike the meaning of the idiom, this power isnā€™t quite so cooperative. Feine has always made hard compromises, and this would be one of them. If he makes physical contact with his target, the extent of their exhaustion and injuries is combined and then distributed equally. Although it isnā€™t the most useful of abilities quite yet, it seems that with practice, he will slowly be able to manipulate the distribution, and even do it with will instead of physical contact.

Additional Info.:
Although his unintentional killer does not remember the accident himself, it was quite a story ā€“ how a university student fell from over six stories and escaped any harm whatsoever. This is one of many factors that is keeping Feine from reconnecting with his former life. However, as always, his older sister knows him best. She seems determined to pull the truth from him no matter what.

So begins...

Shae Elder

Shae perched on top of a metal fence, watching the spirits with disinterested eyes. Although there seriously wasnā€™t that much of a difference between the real world and the spirit world, she liked the spirit world much better. True, there was always the threat of stumbling upon one of the evil spirits, especially at night, and some of the inhabitants were disfigured, it was a lot better than dealing with the humans day in and day out.

Thinking of humans, she had a new one as a pet. He had died a little while ago, but she still couldnā€™t be bothered to learn his name - all that mattered was if he was able to do his task or not. She looked over at the silver chain that connected him to her, and with an irritated look on her face, tugged at it. If only it could bring him over to her, but no - she had to exit the spirit world and head over there to fetch him. Exactly who was the Reaper here, and who was the student apprentice pet?

There was always too much to do as a Reaper, with some of the more troublesome spirits always looking to prey on others. She hoped that the guy would be helpful, the human. Without his scythe though, and the pouting pitiful actions that she would no doubt encounter, there was little hope for him. Ah, what a shame.

She pushed herself upwards, before using her scythe to change the world from the spirit world into the human world. In a way, the human world seemed less real to her, without the constant threat of spirits that could actually kill her. Here, even if she got ran over by a car, there would be pain, yes, but there were some perks that came with being a Reaper. Her clothing didnā€™t change, as she preferred to stay in that outfit completely, unlike those of her coworkers.

Ah, she hated the human world. So much moreā€¦ boring. It had none of the edge, and everything on this side of the world was easy. As soon as she could leave and head to the other side, it was better. Plus, this world - it showed her exactly what she had left behind. The hustle and bustle that didnā€™t matter, and of course, the humans. They were boring to her, as each of them seemed the same. Other than variations in size and color, she could easily think that it was the same person wandering around. So, where was that little pet of hers.

Tugging at the silver chain in her hand, which was without form and invisible to others, she followed a path to her apprentice. ā€œPet,ā€ she said with a certain nonchalance, ā€œitā€™s time to go. Itā€™s night time in the Reaper World, and time for your first test.ā€ A pause later, she turned her dark eyes in his direction. ā€œJust donā€™t die. I would hate to have to go searching for another dead person - itā€™s far too bothersome.ā€ The sooner that he either quit or became a Reaper, the happier that she would be. Making sure to keep at least a meter distance between them, she affixed the boy - he appeared older than herself, but she was, in reality, much older than him - with an appraising look. ā€œIf you survive, Iā€™ll think about helping you along. If you end up in trouble - donā€™t think that Iā€™ll do anything to help because I like you. Youā€™re just my pet. And pets are replaceable.ā€ If he had too much trouble with this, she would break the chain. It wouldnā€™t be any help if she had to carry around some sort of whelp for a couple of years. How would she do her tasks then?

ā€œDoctor, I said that Iā€™m fine, and the test results prove it. Iā€™ve already made arrangements to get home.ā€ However, no matter how many times Feine insisted, this doctor seemed set on keeping him in the hospital even if that meant wasting staff on guarding his room all day. Apparently it was impossible for someone to fall from as high up as Feine did and escape without a single injuryā€¦

Of course it was impossible.

This doctor just didnā€™t understand. Feine couldnā€™t help but be frustrated with the whole situation ā€“ he didnā€™t expect anyone else to understand when even he himself didnā€™t know just what had happened those few hours back. The only thing he was sure of was the pain. His memory was a little hazy, but he clearly remembered the pain. It was as if every single bone in his body had splintered, the fragments piercing through his flesh. He had felt his neck twist into an impossible angleā€¦ and he had to go through all that because of some idiot heā€™d considered his friend.

Apparently something in his expression seemed strained, because the doctor hastily issued some prescription for an obscure painkiller before resuming his poking and prodding of the poor boy. This stupid doctor ā€“ Feine couldnā€™t help but compare this man to his sister. Despite the difference in age, it was obvious his sister as far more competent, although he would never admit that to herā€¦ His sister couldnā€™t find out about all this. That was just a disaster in the making, knowing her personality. In fact, he wasnā€™t sure if he could face anyone he knew anymore, especially now that he wasā€¦ wasā€¦

Was that even possible? He had never even believed in the existence of an afterlife, let alone the messenger of souls themselves! How was he supposed to believe that he was now apprenticed to one? How was he supposed to believe that he was deadā€¦ yet still alive?

ā€¦ It all made his head hurt...

ā€œDoctor, if I need anything, itā€™s rest. Iā€™m not going to run away or anything, so just leave me alone.ā€ Maybe it was his tone or just the distantly bitter expression, but something compelled the doctor to listen to him this time. Finally ā€“ took the man long enough to get a clue. Ever since he woke up on that concrete sidewalk, all Feine wanted was a quiet chance to think for himself. Instead, he got sirens, screaming, yelling, shattered glass, more sirens, a long trip in an ambulance, x-rays, CAT-scans and some nurse trying to jab needles in his arm. These service people always seemed to know exactly what he needed most.

ā€œWhy me?ā€ he mumbled, gently massaging his wrist. The silver chain shackled to it was cold in his hands, so very real to him, yet it didnā€™t exist. How the heck was that even possible? The answer? It shouldnā€™t be. It wasnā€™tā€¦ or so heā€™d like to think, but nothing made sense anymore. ā€œSo Iā€™mā€¦ a reaperā€™s apprentice.ā€ The reality of the fact suddenly hit him when he first stated it aloud. He wasnā€™t human anymore. Heā€™d planned to return to his life from before by taking this second chance, butā€¦ obviously that wasnā€™t possible. How had he overlooked that when he was given the choice?

ā€œPet, itā€™s time to go.ā€

Startled by the sudden unwelcome voice, Feine bolted to his feet, twisting around to face the intruder. Instead, he saw a younger girlā€¦ a rather familiar girl that he didnā€™t want to see. ā€œItā€™s night time in the Reaper World, and time for your first test.ā€ Yes, because he was just so excited to embark on this spirit-hunting quest, and it was so obvious that she was as well. And then she went on to spout nonsense about finding replacements, survival, infuriating thingsā€¦ were all reapers soā€¦ cold? So aggravating?

ā€œYouā€™re just my pet. And pets are replaceable.ā€

This girl was shorter than him stature-wise and even seemed younger than him by at least a few years. It only made those belittling words of hers all the more irritating. ā€œReaper or not, Iā€™d watch your mouth, little brat,ā€ he muttered under his breath. This time, to be heard, he stated, ā€œIā€™m no pet either. Besides, if I disappear now into thatā€¦ spiritā€¦ world now, at least eight of the doctors here are going to throw a fit.ā€

In truth, he was curious about that strange other world and his new job, but he was reluctant too. It meant finalizing this decision that he could not undoā€¦ and really, having to listen to this girl for the rest of his life just aggravated him to defiance.

Shae Elder

Her little apprentice seemed to be surrounded with a multitude of those humans and their machines. How unfortunate - maybe she shouldnā€™t have chosen one that seemed to be so bothersome. Seeming to be quite busy, she sighed in annoyance. After all, she had hoped that after dragging him over to the Spirit World, she would have to do little true interaction with him. ā€œIā€™m no pet either. Besides, if I disappear now into thatā€¦ spiritā€¦ world now, at least eight of the doctors here are going to throw a fit.ā€

Shae couldnā€™t help but feel irritated by his words and actions. She was the Reaper in this scenario, and he, as her lowly apprentice, ought to have listened. After all, she was the one who had the power over his life - or survival, as she might say. What was his name again? She didnā€™t quite recall, but it sounded something like Fain. And only a human as vain as him would dare to keep a reaper waiting.

With a frown, she addressed him again, ignoring the doctors as though they were naught but bugs. ā€œSo, little pet,ā€ she intoned in a monotone, ā€œwho gave you the slightest hint that I would care about the reactions of these humans?ā€ She looked at the silver bracelet on her wrist and its matching twin on the wrist of her pet. Tilting her head to the side, she grasped it with a hand and held it softly in her hand. ā€œI donā€™t have the time to waste on dealing with such a task. If you donā€™t wish to leave immediately, then so be it.ā€ He was just a hindrance after all - she could use his refusal to justify breaking the chain and sending him on as a spirit. Shae really didnā€™t feel like having to deal with the idiocy of humans at the moment.

She stepped backwards again, affixing her rebelliously annoying apprentice with a stare. Why had she decided to get one in the first place? ā€œJust realize that these poor humans will most likely go into the same type of confusion that you originally mentioned, as you would be going into the Spirit World - Iā€™m sure that you understand what I mean.ā€ Then, turning on the ball of her foot, she turned her back to the boy.

Stepping forward, she ignored him. After this, she would be able to return to the Spirit World, which lacked these boring, monotonous humans. He didnā€™t have to follow her - but she knew that should she not sense that he was there dogging her steps like an apprentice was supposed to, she would remove him from the picture. She didnā€™t need an apprentice all that much either. Her fingers found the link that connected each other together and started to toy with the almost handcuff-esque bracelet. Shae felt a shudder go down her back from the disgust at being tied to someone else. Her smooth step faltered, and she halted, waiting. Would he come or not?
