A dwarf on a pilgrimage; student of foreign technologies, to bring honour to his clan-name when he finally returns.
Friendly, but opportunistic. Slow to anger, but also slow to forgive.
He generally wears well fitted brown leathers, with two single-shot flintlock pistols holstered around his waist. A single handed axe is hooked on his belt.
Carries a backpack for essentials; such as food, water, a bedroll and spikes of iron.
Also carries a magnifying glass. Claims he can appraise the value of a gem on the spot with it.
The dwarf Karnoc, son of Arnoc.
Creator of the two single-shot flintlock pistols that are always by his side, son of the great metalsmith Arnoc, who is turn was the leader of clan Karatosh; renowned metalsmiths of the dwarven undercity Dunr-Fharok. He is on a pilgrimage, a student of foreign technologies, to bring honour to his clan-name when he finally returns.
So he would tell you.
In truth, he and his clan had been cast out of Dunr-Fharok. Two leading rival clans had been at each others throats for so long, no one could remember when it had actually started. Dunr-Fharok had been under the rule of clan Barugoth for generations, a time hailed as a Golden Age of the undercity; rich veins of precious gems and minerals were discovered, incredible inventions and technologies came into fruition... and trade was well with the outside kingdoms.
The rule had been benevolent, and the people prospered.
Clan Taragash had been a bitter rival during this time. According to legends, Barugoth and Taragash founded Dunr-Fharok (the double barrelled name was said to be a product of two names; each given by Barugoth and Taragash). The two clans worked hard together to piece the undercity together, and were in harmony for a time. It was inevitable that the people would cry out for someone to lead them, and Taragash had lost in a spiteful duel between the clan masters of the time. Barugoth had ruled over Dunr-Fharok ever since.
That changed a few years ago.
Calamity after calamity struck the undercity; mines would mysteriously collapse, miners would disappear under mysterious circumstances, trade began to falter and crime ran rampant in the streets. It hit a climax, when several high-bourne dwarves were found murdered, a flintlock pistol specifically crafted for Barugoth found at the scene. And the flintlock, of course, had been crafted by clan Karatosh.
Conspiracy theories sprang about; the people began to suspect Barugoth's rule â some even claimed that they had remained in power for so long by eliminating potential rivals. And upheaval began, and Taragash stepped in to fill the void of leadership; the entire Barugoth clan was sentenced to death, while Karatosh, seen as co-conspirators, had their senior members executed... and their younger ones exiled, face-branded to mark their shame.
Karnoc shaved his head and beard, leaving only short stubbles of hair on his head and face, vowing that he will keep it that way until his clan's honour is restored... with Taragash cast down into the dirt.
