Keith Tempest

Keith was just an average police officer when Z-day occurred. He stayed locked in his basement as long as he could.

0 · 272 views · located in Western USA

a character in “The Dead Apocalypse”, as played by StoneVanguard

Description

Keith is roughly 6 feet tall exactly with light brown hair and blue eyes. He is built like an average man, not too muscular, but not overweight. At this point he has light stubble covering his face, he was forced to leave his straight-razor behind. He has a jagged scar on his left arm from when he fell off his roof when he was eight years old. He wears a faded blue police uniform, spattered in various places with blood. He has tried to keep himself as clean as possible, but the dirt and sweat have started to accumulate and he keeps a bit of a rough appearance. He is at the prime age of 26.

Personality

He has always had a good sense of humor, making jokes to cheer up his friends even in the worst of situations. Unfortunately the Apocalypse has taken it's toll on him. He no longer sees the bright side of things. He has become deeply pessimistic, only cracking his trademark jokes in apathy. He has begun to lose faith in humanity, or what's left of it. He has seen looters, rapists, murderers, these were all normal people before the Apocalypse happened. He fears greatly that one day he will become just as bad as those people. He is depressed, as are many of the survivors, but the crushing depression he suffers each day is enough to cause most to end their own lives. The only reason he manages to survive is because of the rapidly being used up Anti-Depressants he keeps with him at all times.

Equipment

A bottle that stores roughly 80 Anti-Depressants, he only has 45 left.

A medium backpack that he keeps various things in such as his Canteen, a gallon jug to refill it with (currently full), a flashlight with roughly 2 hours of battery life left, a newspaper from before the Apocalypse, a 200 page Journal, and a deck of playing cards. It also has a few MRE's that he had left over from his basement supply.

Being a police officer, he still has a bit of his equipment:
1 .45 Pistol with 9 round magazine. He has 2 spare magazines.
1 Tazer with 2 cartridges. Useless against the dead, but could come in handy against any rowdy survivors.
1 12 gauge shotgun with 4 Slugs and 3 beanbag rounds.

History

Keith grew up on a farm, and as such, has a good background for maintaining a farm, though it has been many years. He married when he was seventeen, after getting his girlfriend Tina, pregnant. They had a beautiful baby girl that he cared for dearly. He had always dreamed of becoming a police officer, but he didnt think he was ever going to be able to, because his father disapproved. Nonetheless he joined the force and was much beloved by his fellow officers, because he was a damn good cop. He was finishing up some paperwork when Z-Day hit. He didn't even realize what had happened until it was too late. When he got home later that evening, his wife and nine year old daughter were both infected. He didn't have the heart to put them down, so he locked them in the house and he descended into the basement, living off of disaster rations for several months. When the electricity and water ran out and his food rations were growing thin, he decided it was time to move out and well... survive.

So begins...

Keith could hear some shooting a few blocks away, but he had more pressing matters at the moment. He was currently being pursued by a group of 10 of the Rotters, flesh hanging off in long strips, the sickly sweet smell of rotting flesh. He shuddered as he ran, hoping to whatever God may exist that he wouldn't soon become a meal for one of these bastards. He glanced behind him and fired his .45 into one of the Rotters skulls, taking it down instantly, but wasting another bullet completely, missing all of the Rotters and hitting a tree. Yeah, the head, it's the only way to keep these bastards down for good. He learned that the hard way, having to find out this technique on his wife and daughter. A stream of tears ran down his face as he ran. He would survive this. He had to.

He decided that even if whoever was shooting off guns was hostile, he had a better chance with them than the Rotters, so he holstered his handgun and began hopping fences to the last place he heard the shots come from.

The gunfire in the distance grew closer and more intense, Keith began to hustle and hurry. He saw a small group of survivors being assaulted by quite a few Rotters. "Damn, these guys are in worse shape than I am" he silently cursed. He was still a cop, even though the world had gone to shit, and it was his job to protect those in need. He pulled out his shotgun and cursed loudly. Only 4 shots, hopefully I only need one to help. He went into a full sprint, getting behind the Rotters. He called ahead to the survivors "Move, I'll draw their attention!" He shot a Rotter through the skull with his shotgun and pumped it, the loud boom echoing through the area. Most of the Rotters turned to face him and he cursed himself for being caring in this world as he turned to run, quickly spotting a one story house, climbing atop of the roof, looking around to see what he could do next.

Lydia ran with Alex, she made the foul mistake of screaming in horror, attracting walkers to her. As several of the dead tried to grab her she split from the group, shooting one right through the eye. She began to panick "Alex! Help!" she yelled, but it was too late. Lydia looked around and couldn't see much, so she ran down the street as fast as she could, the undead pursuing her. As she turned around the corner she hid behind a car, succesfully removing herself from the walkers eyeline. Yet it was a shallow victory, she looked around and Alex and Jake were missing. "No, no, no!" she cried to herself, she was alone again.

Suddenly from the wrecked car one of the undead spewed out, it tried to grab her but Lydia kicked it. While she tried to get the thing off her it just tightened its grip, Lydia's heart froze in fear, she could feel it turning to stone. Wrestling the walker harder she whacked its face with the butt of her gun, knocking it back, and hopefully killed it. Lydia crawled away in horror into a back alley, there she layed next to a dumpster and softly wept. She prayed once more everything would be alright, even though in the back of her mind she knew her God had abandoned her.

She checked her bullets in the gun, 5 bullets in her barrel, and a few more in her backpack. To her delight she saw a man standing on a rooftop. She was urged to call out to him, but then she saw the horde around him. They were desperate for a living meal, their rotting flesh dripping in the beating sunlight. Lydia wiped the sweat off her brow with a brush of the hand and waved to the man, hoping he would see her.

Keith saw two men drop into a sewer, one of them appeared to be injured, although at this distance he could not tell from what. He saw the woman in the group run off into a back alley. He considered his options and realized that there was little he could do. He checked his mags, 7 in his current mag, with 2 more full mags. He had 3 slugs left in his shotgun, not enough to be much use. He pounded his hands against his head and thought for a few minutes. He took out his tazer and set it to drive stun mode, making the electric current arc between the two electrodes on it, making a loud audible noise. He shouted at the Rotters and cursed as he jumped down on the side of the building, holding his tazer's trigger down thus making noise. He really hoped this works. He had a rather large lead on the Rotters, so he ducked around a fence and quickly juryrigged his tazer's trigger to be held down, dropping it on the ground, still sparking and making noise. And he started ran, going around to the other side of the fence. He layed low for a few minutes and holy fuck it worked.

The Rotters had associated the tazer's noise with their prey. They were pawing at the tazer on the ground. Shit, he was out of a tazer, but it saved his life. He quickly determined the best route to get to the woman and did so, sneaking past a few Rotters until he crept into the alley. "Hey, are you alright?" he quietly called to the woman.

Lydia almost screamed from the shock when she heard the man, she looked at him, her heart racing. "It's you! From the roof!" she eventually whispered after catching her breath. Lydia stood up and cracked a brief smile, "How did you escape the roof?" she asked. Lydia shook her head, she didn't actually want an answer, all she needed was company. She peeked her head outside the alley onto the streets, far too many walkers to walk down the street openly. Lydia held her gun, gently gesturing the man to follow her. As she hunched over she gently walked down the street in a crouched manner. She took a sidewalk and tried any building she could for an unlocked door. By the time she got some length down the street she found a door into a clothes shop. A couple of walkers twisted their necks Lydia's way, limping towards her "God damnit..." she whispered, "Hurry, get inside" she said to the man who was behind her. She barged through the door and ran inside, gun at the ready.

The store was sufficently lit by the glass panels outside, so she could see most of the store. Lydia stayed crouched and brushed strands of hair off her face, pale with nerves. As the walkers outside picked up pace she found shelter near a rack of clothes at the back of the store, near a perfume stand. In order to cover up her and her newfound partners scent she sprayed a ton of perfume around the room, causing her to cough a lot. She slid down behind the clothes rack and ripped into her backpack, she took out a bottle of water, a can of tuna and a can opener. "Don't suppose you have a spoon do you?"

He followed her, noting that she liked to take the lead. He smirked when she sprayed the perfume, clever girl. She took out several items, a bottle of water and a can of tuna among them. She had asked him for a spoon. He thought for a moment and reached into his bag, handing her a spoon from a side pocket. "Here you are." He sighed and relaxed a bit, "Too much running in such a short amount of time, your friends dropped into a sewer, only one came out." He pulled out his canteen and took a large swig, the cool water calming his nerves somewhat.

He payed close attention to the windows, watching a few Rotters shamble by. Keith took out a granola bar and quickly scarfed it down, needing the quick sugar boost for his system.

In response to his words, Lydia looked concerned, she prayed that it was Alex who had made it out, yet praying never did anything. She opened the can of tuna with her can opener and gulped it down with the spoon like a hungry pig. She was starving, it was about five in the afternoon and she hadn't eaten all day. While she carefully took some small sips of water, she offered him some tuna. Granola bars wouldn't be enough to last him all day. As they had nothing better to do, Lydia decided to spark a conversation. Or whatever you could call a conversation after the apocalypse. "The name's Lydia, your name?" she talked quietly as not to alert any walkers.

Lydia continued to drink the water until she had a quarter of it left, she offered her water to him too.

He gratefully took some of the tuna, thanking her for her generosity. "I'm Keith, I guess it's nice to meet you Lydia." He paused for a moment deciding on whether or not to ask her about her circumstances for being here, and then decided against it. He knew that if he was asked the same question he would rather not answer it. He heard a few distant gunshots and smiled somewhat "Sounds like your guy is still alive." He pulled out a small white bottle and opened it, shaking a small pill out and swallowing it. Soon he would need to find more, but he would cross that bridge when he came to it.

Lydia stared curiously at the bottle, she looked up at the man and sighed. "We have to get the hell out of here," she whispered to him, she was content on escaping. She felt physically sick staying in the store, especially as she could hear walker growls. Her heart was constantly racing, she felt as if she could have a heart attack. While Keith finished his tuna and the water she told him to leave it in the store, and told him her fairly small list of things. Judging by his uniform she knew what he did, and assumed he would know a nearby police station for ammo. "I don't suppose you know where the nearest police station is? I need .44 magnum rounds for my revolver," she called quietly.

While she zipped up her backpack one of the dead limped by, Lydia froze in horror, hiding by the clothes rack and hoped the incredibly strong perfume smell would hide her own scent. It went on its way and ignored the panicking survivors. She breathed a small sigh of relief, the more she conserved ammo the better.

Keith shook his head, "the closest Police Station would be about a 2 mile walk east of here, but that's right by the hospital." He checked his pistol's magazine and sighed. "It wouldn't be easy, and I can't say that it hasn't been looted yet, so it could be a trip worth nothing." He grabbed his bag and placed his hand on her shoulder, deadly serious "I... I've lost too many people to this fucking apocalypse, we need to find your friend."

Lydia jumped in shock, she heard explosions. Alot of explosions. All the walkers in the store limped outside to find the noise, and Lydia's face lit up in delight. But then her smile faded "I'm afraid we can't go back for Alex, he has to find us. That explosion will attract the walkers attention for long enough, let's go," she spoke with confidence. She stood up once she was sure all the walkers were gone.

Instead of listening to Keith's reason, she crouched and cautiously went down the sidewalk, using wrecked cars or any other debris as cover. As they got through the street Lydia was surprised to find the roads empty, free of walkers. One or two decapitated ones, but Lydia didn't think about them. Then she saw it... There was a nightclub, the same one she performed in during the apocalypse, there were security guards with guns inside, the perfect oppertunity. While she considered her oppertunities one of the dead limped at her. It was clear she had to go inside. She tried the door, a tad stiff but unlocked. Inside it stank of flesh and death, the decay of skin. She gagged as a result of the vile smell.

Business had to be dealt with, she immediately started searching the bodies, this was the first site of the Atlanta outbreak. Security guards had little, clearly they had already been looted. She was wary of them coming back, but that wasn't the first thing on her mind.
