Brief History: After various incidences around the world, resulting in the mass endangerment of various countries' citizens and their property, the American government created a project that would be able to provide some sort of ability to stand against any threat to society. The Crusader Project was created to fill that need. The idea was to create the strongest, most protective armor to ever be made into a suit and give it to a heavily-qualified individual to create a super-soldier. The only thing the American government has declassified about this mysterious man is that he is a member of the United States Military. Anything else is learned from civilian pictures and eye-witnesses' speculation.

The Man Behind The Armored Plating

Real Name
Maj. Mathew Shaw
Age: 27
Height: 6'1 (W/ armor: 6'2)
Weight: 193 lbs (W/ main combat gear: 273 lbs)
Personality: Outside of combat, Mathew is a pretty cool guy. Very friendly and wiling to talk to anyone, considering the fact that he does not get to very often. That aside, he is the typical jar head, forged in the fires of Paris Island, South Carolina...or 'Hell', for short. While he holds incredible amounts of discipline, he can still be a bit outspoken and caries a bulltrue, 'hey diddle-diddle straight up the middle' attitude for doing things. Shaw has shown to keep an incredibly efficient way of thinking and, as such, may come off as strange on occasion for his odd way of not making unnecessary movements or tendency to only say important things on a need-to-know basis.
During combat operations however, Mathew becomes very serious and caries an attitude that would make it seem like an impossible feat to physically move him, not just because of the heavy armor on. His efficient and creative way of thinking is also put to use in the field through various miscellaneous applications of strategy and planning, as well as events that need quick-thinking.
Equipment Information:
  • Biologic Ergonomically Adaptive Resistance (or BEAR) suit.
Affectionately referred to as 'The Bear Suit', this full-body, up-to-the-neck suit is meant to be worn underneath Maj. Shaw's Crusader armor. The suit is weaved in a special Kevlar-like fabric to act as a catch-all for any attack that misses the armor itself or that the armor was not designed to defend against. The suit allows the user to withstand everything from harmful chemicals to high temperatures (ambient protection ~2,300 °F - 1,260 °C and prolonged protection ~1,750 °F - 954 °C), and even the impact of a low to medium caliber round. It can't however, make that round be much less mind-numbingly painful than when shot and wearing typical Dragon Skin body armor with a ballistic plate.
  • Crusader Titanium Alloy Ballistic Plate Armor (Suit)
The Crusader armor gives the wearer the ability to be a modern-age knight in shining armor without the likely-hood of easily being gunned down without the armor doing a thing. The stubborn material that makes up the armor can have virtually anything done to it and it would keep whatever is behind it safe. Non-corrosive, strong, and having a melting point of almost 1/3 the temperature of the surface of the sun (3,000 °F - 1,650 °C); the armor is the best that humanity can make right now.
Sadly, with such a large consumption of material, mainly used in fighter jets and super cars, you can expect that the whole package is worth a little over an F-22 Raptor.
  • Crusader Titanium Alloy Ballistic Plate Armor (Helmet)
The Crusader armor helmet is a work of genius all in its own. While it caries the traits held by the rest of the armor, it has a breathing filter, thermal and night vision, and a state of the art visor built in. The visor is made out of a type of ballistic glass that can even shield the user from a shot with a lower-caliber firearm before it breaks.
  • CR-86 Assault Rifle
    Image
A prototype bullpup assault rifle designed for future use by the US military. The smooth, compact design is meant to fix the problem members of the infantry deal with in urban close quarters combat while keeping the accuracy of a longer barrel and reduce the possibility of it snagging on the user's gear. The fact that it is an inch shorter than the average guy's arm makes it a god-send for anyone kicking down a door into an environment that calls for you to practically get close enough to breath on someone that wants to kill you. The CR-86 also solves the issue many grunts have with the 5.56×45mm NATO and it's particular lack of stopping power, by chambering a 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge for a bigger emphasis on accuracy over rounds down range. Each weapon comes standard issue with a muzzle break/compensator combination on the end of the barrel. Shaw's rifle in particular uses a camera sight, linked to his visor's HUD, to peak around corners without putting himself in much danger. Another attachment added to Shaw's rifle is the suite on the left side of the weapon, near the front. On it is a green laser sight (only visible through night vision goggles and Mathew's visor), tactical light, and miniature 3D holographic projector (see 'Weapon Guide #0001' for the reason on that).
Painted on Shaw's weapon is a creature of dark. Or, as Mathew calls is, 'a monster.'
  • Zephyr S4 Side Arm
Shaw's personal sidearm. A 9mm pistol with built in recoil reduction systems to make it a very efficient weapon to use. The compensator on the business end also comes standard with each S4.
  • M82 Fragmentation Grenade
A modern fragmentation grenade with the added stick handle and pin on the bottom for longer throwing range. Once the safety is disengaged, the grenade may be pulled from its position, simultaneously removing the pin and arming it.
  • Fang Combat/Utility Knife
Slightly forward-swept, more sleek twist to the classic ka-bar knife.
  • Weapon Guide #0001 'Gray'
Just as much of a technological achievement as the Crusader suit of armor. Weapon Guide #0001, or 'Gray' as he has been named by the scientists, is an artificial intelligence program created from the mind of a human being. While it is not the consciousness of the human, it holds all of the knowledge of the host mind and that 'human touch', again-as the scientists call it, while having all of the capabilities of a computer. When accompanying Shaw, Gray can access the armor, weapons, and even tap into other computer systems in close proximity, as well as act as a second pair of eyes, clear of any close to medium range fog of war-long range if Gray focuses in on the area in question. This way, Shaw does not need to worry about what is behind his shoulder and run all of his equipment all by himself. This also allows for greater equipment flexibility. For instance, he could point his weapon at an enemy in close proximity and Gray can create a strobe effect with the tac light, while alternating with the holographic projector, to blind the target and neutralize him with non-lethal measures. Gray is also able to run Shaw's HUD on his visor, to alert him of any injuries sustained to his body and any extra information, like ammunition counts and the camera-holographic sight on the weapon. Not only that, after getting to know each other as much as they do, Shaw and Gray have become a team of steel. Each know the way each other thinks and how to adjust for what each plans to do.
As for the holographic projector installed with the tac light and laser sight, that is what Gray uses to either make himself visible (only for inside the base), without the use of the lens type needed to see him, or transfer knowledge or intelligence outside of the Shaw's HUD.
Extended History: Mathew Shaw never had parents. He grew up in an orphanage with the only parental figure to speak of for him being the owner and small staff. Under the name given to him by the orphanage owner, 'Mathew', and the last name he adopted for himself, 'Shaw', the boy entered school as he waited to be adopted; something that would unfortunately never come to happen. As Shaw grew older and reached young adulthood, he showed major aptitude for creative and technical thinking. His grades were incredibly high, even with the fact that he had skipped grades 8 and 10, and received many scholarships to various colleges, allowing him to get a full ride and not have to worry about paying for everything out of his non-existent wallet.
After four years of studying Aerospace Technology, Mathew enlisted into the United States Marine Corps as an officer and was able to get a spot as a pilot for the F-35B Lightning II. For the three years he spent as a fixed wing pilot, Shaw shined bright still. It did not take long for him to reach the rank of Captain. Soon after, that is when he was contacted by the American Secretary of Defense about a heavily classified matter.
Shaw was now a part of the Crusader project; picked for the combination of his Ability to think quickly and decisively, his youth, his larger overall size, the fact that he was considered a sharpshooter with the standard issue M-16A4 service rifle and a marksman with the standard issue Beretta M9 sidearm, and the key factor that if his identity were to be revealed, he would not have to worry about any family.
After going through specialized training with the Crusader armor and his new weapon guide, Shaw was able to go out on operations dealing with human enemies for the trial run. Then it was to the 'super' humans that his gear was designed for. Three years later, Shaw is now humanity's response to the global crisis of super humans.

Project Crusader Details:
When the first few super humans popped out of the dirt, it was simply a nightmare for any government to go up against them. Assets upon assets would be lost every time any military force would engage a super human. Fighters can be blasted out of the sky; infantry fighting vehicles can be ripped apart; infantry can be single-handedly disposed of. And not to mention one of the more recent instances where all of England's military, in the vicinity around London, did not even have to be destroyed. They were forced to submit without even a fight.
The amount of power born inside of these extraordinary people was staggering, frightening even. The United States government saw this and immediately began work on a project that would combine many of the most advanced technologies available to the US military-even experimental and prototype technologies-to create the metaphorical (and possibly literal) best-damn-punch to the face of any super human threat to show up around the world. After that aspect of the project was nearly finished, all they needed was a user for all of this technology. Someone with high leadership aptitude and at least the basic knowledge of combat with the ability to use it. So, conclusion? They need an officer in the Marine Corps, since every marine is a basic rifleman. This is where Capt. Mathew Shaw comes in. Technically homeless with no real loved ones; on the larger side; a literal genius-if not almost one; expert with creative, technical, and efficient thinking; militarily considered to be a sharpshooter; younger;-you get the point, he is pretty much a super-marine. When Shaw was incorporated into the project, he underwent extensive physical and technical training to be able to effectively use the armor and even learned how to HALO jump. His general aptitude with combat was also improved on with constant training. Then the armor was introduced into the mix. Then Gray.
After it all, Shaw was the force the project hoped he would be. All that was left was a field test.
It's safe to say the known terrorist band he was sent to take down will not be bothering anyone in their area any longer, with most of them dead and their leader captured.
Miscellaneous Notes:
  • Mathew does not get out very often at all. The few instances of leave he gets, he is also on call so he needs to always be prepared.
  • In order to be able to perform effectively in the field, Mathew is constantly working out and doing PT every day.
  • While on base, Mathew keeps Gray on him nearly at all times, and not just because he is encouraged to bond with the A.I. in order to keep a good understanding of each other's way of thinking. In a way, Gray is his only true friend.
  • Despite his typical absence from the world, Shaw is able to keep up with pop-culture through the various movies and video games (all upon request, even before release dates) supplied to him to keep him comfortable during his free time on the base.
  • The pattern on Mathew's ballistic chest plate, 'USSC', stands for United States Security Corps. This is the title of the military half of Project Crusader, from the top brass giving the orders, to the field operative and any others that may get on board with the project in the future.
  • Maj. Shaw shows a particular fondness of talking about his ability to 'kick ass'. Sometimes specifically kicking your ass, but he says it in a way that means anybody, as if it was some sort of college class.
  • Shaw has special clearance to carry a piece on him at almost all times when off-base. While he is outside, he is usually packing his Zepher.
  • Shaw was given complete freedom to customize his armor. They were mainly aesthetic changes, like the target and shark mouth painted on his helmet, the angel painted on his left shoulder piece, and 'DAMN THE VALLEY' scratched into the paint of the breast plate, but some were beneficial to safety, like the risen up left shoulder piece and the extra plate on the forehead area of his helmet.
  • When assuming firing stance with the CR-86, Shaw's armor seems to line up very well, eliminating many of the open spots in his armor or making them much harder to hit but the stomach area is only protected a little more from leaning forward.
  • In order to see Gray, Shaw uses his helmet or a pair of glasses, like anyone else, with the special shade of orange tint needed to be able to look at where Gray 'is' (where he makes himself seen).
  • While the Crusader Project does not exist to engage super humans dubbed 'heroes', Mathew is still advised to exercise heavy caution around them. While they tend to make decisions that benefit the societies they are apart of, they also really do not have any masters to control them. This makes them a threat as well. Not one to fight but to be wary of.
Weaknesses:
  • If hit by rifle-caliber bullet (or something of similar force) in a spot not covered by the Crusader armor, it can be devastating to Shaw's situation. For instance, if hit in the stomach area, he could easily go down and lose his breath; stunned for a good amount of time.
  • While Shaw is quick on his feet for someone with 80 lbs of gear, he is still lugging 80 lbs of gear. To him, the phrase 'ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain' no longer exists and now he just says 'pounds equal pain'. After what may seem like a short time to one of the unarmored super humans, Shaw may seem to move a little sluggish due to the fatigue.
  • Maj. Shaw is often late to a fight due to his need to get to it by HALO jump or insertion by aircraft. The need for a speedy entrance often causes problems since a HALO jump needs to be coordinated and an insertion is done by the rather large V-22 Osprey. From there, he typically has to rappel down and that cannot be done with tall buildings around, unless he gets inserted on one of those buildings-which causes obvious problems, even if there is a way down.
  • Shaw was recruited into the project because he almost seems super human, but that is the thing. He is not. He is still human and there are many boundaries that humans simply cannot break. He has his armor and his other special gear to make him a force to be reckoned with but he can easily be outmatched by the right person. Mother Nature is a very creative woman and you can be damn-well sure she will find someone that could easily break the bit of humanity's will-given form around that Major Mathew Shaw...

So begins...
