The second oldest of five children, Harry was born
to Ruth and Donald McKee, a homegrown American woman and a recent Irish immigrant, respectively. Harry grew up in a fairly prosperous household, his mother being a wet nurse and father running Sandy Springs Grocery for as long as little Harry could remember. That’s one of the few things Harry really had to remember. In his eyes, Sandy Springs was the single most dreary town on God’s given land. With McKee’s strict Catholic upbringing and emphasis on politesse and education, Harry’s siblings grew up to be hardworking ladies and gentlemen, helping their father run the store, or hopping the trains to New York to work in the banks. But Harry wanted none of that. Much to his father’s irritation, counting figures never interested Harry as much as the pretty girls that loitered around town square and the liquor that the boy managed to secure despite the out-of-the-way position of their little town. And, when the very first Orphan Train came to a halt in the newly built train station, Harry realized his chance to see the world and all that it could offer. He never saw in his future a life of settling down with a few kids, and in the Orphan Train Harry saw a way to keep a shelter and a living without the horrors of a stationary life. It was a miracle on wheels! Since then, Harry has become a veteran of the railways, having traveled the great expanse of America several times. He’s seen the kids come and go, has met with most likely every single community organizer in States themselves, and knows the train better than his own hometown. Has he grown tired of the countless nights of fornication, merriment and fine drinking? Harry likes to think not. And yet, ever since he’d received news of his parents’ deaths, Harry cannot help but wonder what life would have been like if he had chosen the path that his father had wanted for him.

{ Personality }

A man with little inhibition, Harry is the type to actively seek out what he wants on a whim. Whether that be a lovely lady to spend the night, a flagon of whiskey to share with Wesley, or simply a meal that does not consist of stew and more stew (no offense to [THE COOK]), Harry is resourceful enough to procure almost anything for himself or the staff of the Malcolm, well, the ones that he likes. Harry is rather egotistical that way. He truly does believe he’s a real debonair. This confidence serves him well, and whether it’s deserved or not, Harry will never know, since his passionate affairs never last past sunrise.

With his love for luxuries aside, Harry is a hard worker. The Catholic upbringing still resonates with Harry in his focus and loyalty to the Malcolm. There were many occasions in which Harry was tempted to leave and chase numerous white rabbits into whatever holes they beckoned him to, but his sense of responsibility to the train always had him on board and ready to depart when the train’s strict schedule demanded it. This sense of responsibility also lends to Harry’s overall righteousness. He’s not one to stand by when a crime is being perpetrated or an innocent is being harmed. Despite his general indifference to the children, Harry will protect them if need be. He has never allowed punch or a kick to land on those kids from any potential adopters—his conscience simply won’t allow it.
Harry is a man who walks with an air of purpose to him. He only falters at single thought—one that just so happens to arise whenever he finds himself in the company of [THE NURSE]. The more he’d gotten to know her, the more Harry feels compelled to make his feelings known to this woman. And yet, the fear of a life of commitment, especially one that almost certainly includes the child, for which he has no love or interest, holds him back. Harry is a man who, for the first time in his life, is unsure of what he wants.
