Bryndis Leigh

"If you've got the money, I've got the time"

0 · 311 views · located in Zorgoth

a character in “The Guilds of Zorgoth”, as played by PetitePoisson

Description

Age: 25
Gender: Female (usually dresses as a male though)
Class: Swordsman
Guild: "HHH"

Size and Structure: 5”3 and about 114 lbs. She’s between slim and average with light curves.

Weapon:
Ironwood baton: Almost resembles a practice sword. This is her preferred weapon of choice. It’s light, yet still very durable, allowing her to still move quickly in combat. It has no cutting edges though so it can only really be used with blunt force and for disabling others.

Light-weight rapier: Forged from several different metals to combine light-weight sturdiness with a razor edge. It’s heavier than her baton, but still allows her to move rapidly.

Appearance:
ImageImageShe consistently dresses as a man when she’s on the job and as a result, she’s always mistaken as a teenage boy and that suits her just fine. She wears a baggy white button-up shirt with the bottom tucked into a pair of form-fitting black pants with calf-high boots that have just enough heel to add to her height without seeming effeminate. She also keeps her deep brown hair tied back tightly in a low ponytail while dressed like this. Since she has a fairly small build, even for a girl, her appearance as a boy is that much smaller and her feminine face also makes her appearance as a boy seem younger than her actual age.

For other occasions, such as when she isn’t working, she usually likes dressing in a simple white dress or any other more feminine attire; she won’t wear pants other than when she’s working. She always lets her hair down and just naturally seems to exude a more charming appearance than when in her male attire.
Her most distinct feature is her green eyes which boast a more vivid colour than most. Many don’t notice this unless they pay close attention however.

Personality:
Off the job she’s out-going and fun-loving, at times becoming a little wild. She’s a woman and she’s willing to flaunt it (subtly) in the way she walks and talks. Money and alcohol are two of her greatest weaknesses and she’s not afraid to admit it. Despite putting money first, she always seems to waste all her earnings very quickly.
She loves a good laugh and honestly it’s probably one of the best ways to get on her good-side. Those who don’t have a good sense of humour usually find themselves victims of her teasing. She prides herself in her use of sarcasm and humour.

Crossing her can be dangerous business if you aren’t careful. Though she’s pretty good-humoured, she can be pushed over the edge and that’s when she gets aggressive. She won’t fight until she’s been attacked first, but you can bet it will hurt.

Once she puts on her pants, her personality changes drastically. This results in people rarely ever knowing that both herself on and off work are the same people. On the job, she’s very work-oriented and will obey her orders faithfully. She takes her assignments seriously, though whether this is by nature or her drive for money is unclear, even to her.
She speaks with very few words and consistently in a very serious tone though her choice of words wavers from being down to earth to being fairly vague. This personality is comparatively mysterious in nature and her opinion on most things becomes very indifferent.

Home: Originally from Eldin but now calls Torin home

Back-story:
Bryndis was born into an average family in Eldin as the youngest of 8, though since the time she was old enough to remember she’s the only one to be raised by their parents. All her brothers and sisters had been sent to either schools or convents, or had been taken as apprentices or knights in training. Her knowledge of them only stemmed from the occasional letter home. With so many successful children coming along, her parents intended to raise her as a ‘proper lady’ and with any luck marry her off to a wealthy suitor. Bryndis on the other hand couldn’t stand where her life was heading and began rebelling fiercely by the time she was 14. She tried to become a knight but was instantly rejected. Her next option was a guild, but both her age and lack of training made for an instant refusal.

Getting desperate, she hired a mercenary to train her, a plan which worked out excellently-at least for a year. Once her parents discovered her training routines, they tightened their grip, though the skills she learned had already set in. As her parents picked out potential suitors, Bryndis continued to train by herself in secret, becoming more and more comfortable and confident in her skills.

It was finally one ordinary seeming evening that she took the opportunity to leave home. She knew what she was giving up, and although frightened, she also knew what she had to gain. Her skills were good – she was sure she had what it took to be a mercenary at least. Unfortunately for her, it wasn’t that simple though, and while roaming around Eldin she still struggled to find clients. Her small frame and stature made many people doubt her abilities as both a labourer and a fighter. To help her get by, she often took on small jobs like waiting tables and singing in taverns and bars. They rarely paid well though, and she usually found herself squandering a large portion of her earnings after her shifts. How could she help it though, between the allure of the young men who sometimes came by to the seeming endless flow of ale if you had the coin. Though never bored, it was very much a dead-end living and she ultimately decided to take her chances and move on to Torin, entering under the guise of an entertainer.

Work was a little easier to come by in Torin and the lifestyle there suited her better, but she still wasn’t doing as well as she hoped. People still doubted her, mostly based on her appearance - and who could blame them? If she was going to be paid, people wanted to make sure she could at least get the job done. In a drastic move, she adopted a more masculine appearance and a different personality to see if it would help. While people still doubted her as a mercenary, work instantly became easier to find. The money she was getting was still not that great though. It was enough to get by and still have a good time now and then, but still, she knew she could do better. Perhaps if she finally joined a guild...

Thoughts on Guild Members:

Black: Black was a mysterious one, that was for sure. She'd heard stories about him, but meeting him in person was something she'd never expected to do. Bryndis was uncertain whether she could trust him or not but the man always seemed to know exactly what he was doing. He was also willing to give her a chance, and that was something she couldn't overlook. Hopefully she'd be able to meet to his expectations as a member of the guild. Looking at him, his appearance was a little unsettling at first. A shadowed out face with just a pair of glowing eyes, the rest of himself always covered and cloaked. He kept himself completely hidden and while she was curious why, what really interested her is what actually he looked like. She imagined a couple possibilities, but whatever his appearance, Black was powerful and not to be messed with.

Loke: Right off the bat, Bryndis liked his personality. This guy seemed to know how to have a good laugh and a good time, they'd get along just fine. Not to mention there was no harm in having a little extra luck on your side. She couldn't help but wonder though if it really was okay to rely on it, especially in battle. Maybe she just didn't completely understand the power, but it seemed a little reckless to her. His gambling is what led her to think this- it didn't look as though this habit had left him unscathed. Black clearly appears to trust him nonetheless, and fair enough, Loke probably wouldn't have made it this far if he wasn't skilled.

Vivian: Honestly, Vivian was a little intimidating. Bryndis admired that in a way- this woman looked like she meant business. On the other hand, felt she would probably have to work hard to impress her. Not that this was anything new for her. Vivian always looked serious too, and Bryndis couldn't help but wonder if she ever let loose. She'd clearly been through a lot, but nonetheless... One thing that made her uneasy was the fact that Vivian was a mind walker. She had heard the occasional tale about mind walkers and their talents, but she was unfamiliar with the actual extent of their abilities. If the name was any indication though, she guessed it involved people's minds, and frankly the thought of anyone being able to mess with her mind or hear her thoughts was rather...nerve-wracking.

Barmaid Lucinda (NPC): This girl was a sweetheart. Bryndis couldn't help but remember her own youth when looking at Lucy. Her willingness to stay on and help with the guild was commendable, plus it also entertained her to no end the way the girl doted on Black. She liked the girl and saw her as someone who would make a good friend.

Extra: Her birth name isn’t Bryndis Leigh. She changed it after becoming a mercenary. When dressed as a boy she also wears a special corset under her shirt which helps mask her gender and doubles as armour.

Bryndis rolled lazily onto her stomach, burying her face in her pillow, hoping to grab at least a few more minutes of sleep. Morning's usually went one of two ways for her- well or poorly, and so far it was following the latter route. Her feeble attempt to escape the morning sun's rays was failing as she could still sense the soft light coming through the window, and well, she was already awake at this point. She threw the sheets off her back and stretched, her eyes meanwhile adjusting to the surrounding room. It had only been a couple months since she had joined the guild, but the satisfaction it brought her still hadn't worn off. An involuntary smile crossed her face as she pulled herself out of bed.

It was probably for the better though that she got up now as the other guild members seemed to already be awake. Light chatter from the main hall drifted into her room, voices she could only assume to belonged to Loke and Lucy. She wandered sleepily toward her dresser and stared blankly into the mirror for a good moment before actually picking up her brush.
"I should sleep earlier." she grumbled to herself, softly brushing out her hair. Once she found it at a visually appealing level, she slipped on one of her simple dresses and a pair of plain shoes. Done dressing, she took a quick inspection of her room and frowned. She straightened the sheets out over her bed, hardly making it proper but still better than the crumpled mass it was before. Next she re-folded her shirt and pants which had been tossed on a the wooden chair in the corner of her room. They could stand a few more wears before they had to be washed. Menial tasks done, she figured she should check to see how things were outside.

The room was empty, except for Vivian and Lucy, both seated near the counter.
"Good morning." Bryndis greeted, taking up a chair nearby. About to try and make some light talk, the door opened, Black at the entrance. As Lucy ran over to meet him, she couldn't help but smile at the girl's action. A sudden voice from behind indicated Loke was now present as well. She turned and nodded a good morning to him, then focused her attention back to the guild leader.
"Hello and good morning," she chimed.

Bryndis leaned forward in her chair, lifting her hand to try and stealthily mask the grin that was spreading across her face. The sight of Lucy's attentiveness to Black was adorable and entertaining all at once. She almost felt bad for the girl the way Black teased her, except her reactions were priceless. Not to mention, the way her face lit up when Black was in the room. She stifled a giggle.

As Lucy left the room, Bryndis was tempted to flag her down and ask for a meal of her own. She wasn't particularly hungry though, and thinking on it, she doubted she would be able to eat much right now anyways. If she got hungry later she'd worry about it then, she decided. Turning her attention back to Black, she noticed he had produced four letters from his cloak, all which had been tossed on the table before him. She raised an eyebrow in curiosity. Four tasks at once? This will be interesting.

Black began explaining the jobs in a most entertaining manner. Once she heard about the two sponsored jobs, she knew this was going to be interesting. What a lucky coincidence that both jobs would be taking place so close to each other! She smiled helplessly. Then there was the famine in the village. Selling the food there would certainly make a tidy profit indeed.

"Three birds with one stone." Bryndis laughed. She leaned back casually in her seat and thought over the jobs. She wasn't too sure about hiring bandits, but Black seemed to know what he was doing. His plan was solid, and the profit they stood to make was very worthwhile.
"I do have one question, but first..." Bryndis stood up and left the hall for her room. If they were to leave once he finished eating, she would have to get changed now.

She entered her room and quickly slid out of her outfit, tossing them casually onto her chair. A quick rummage through her drawer and she retrieved her custom corset. She could stand to treat it more carefully since it had cost her a good amount to have it made, but it was also supposed to double as armor, so it should withstand a little rough-handing. Once she was satisfied with how it looked and felt, she moved on to her plain shirt and black pants.

The shirt hung loosely over her frame, and combined with the corset, it masked her gender completely. Bryndis glanced in the mirror and picked up her hair tie. It was nothing more than a short red ribbon, but it's what really helped sell her outfit. She tied her hair back into a tight low pony-tail and stared straight-faced into the mirror. Her gender-swap was complete. She did up her boots and grabbed both her baton and sword, fastening them to her waist. The job could take a while and there was no guessing if she'd need one more than the other.

She re-entered the main hall calmly, and looked over at Black.
"My question," she began, "was if we're going to explain to each clients the bandits were a front? They'd have no reason to pay us if either thought it was an unfortunate mishap."
She straightened herself, shifting her gaze away for a moment, then back to Black's face.

Bryndis listened to Black's explanation attentively. She agreed with him, she should have known their policy by now. It had only been a couple of months since she joined, but that wasn't an excuse. She made a mental note not to forget it again. Her mouth twitched into the faintest of smiles for a split second as he complimented her. She would have preferred not to have let that slip, but her human nature got the best of her. Too late now, she instead hoped no one else had the privilege of noticing.

The way they ran their business made sense, she had no disagreements there. It was a policy that worked especially well for less...honest jobs. Sabotaging the delivery of food supplies was an excellent example of this. The bandits also made perfect sense now, though she still wasn't sure how she felt about working alongside them. She nodded in agreement about her confusion. Asking for the money back would be rather unfavourable, all the more so if the person had already spent their share.

Black's consideration for his guild member's well-being was nice to hear. She thought over how much money she had with her now. It should be enough. She dug her hands in her pants pockets and felt the leftover coins at the bottom. Between that and the money she kept in her purse, she had no need for the extra money now. It was still good to know the option was available though. She'd prefer not to have to return to scrounging around and odd-jobs in search of spare change. She nodded her head as a sign she understood.
"Good to hear." she responded plainly. There was little room for misinterpretation in what he said.

Vivian got up and crossed the room to retrieve her boots. Bryndis watched unconsciously for a moment, then concluded she should use the remaining time to go over herself. It would be a while before they'd return so she'd best have everything she'd need on her. She took her hands from her pockets and dusted off her pants. A light tap on her chest to make sure her corset was well placed and comfortable. She then drew her baton and did a quick inspection. It was littered with scratches and chips, though the wood was tough and held up well considering its use. She put it back on her belt, and turned her attention back to the room. There was no need to inspect her sword. She had checked it the night before and it saw less use than her baton anyway.

Already set to leave, Bryndis headed straight to the stables shortly after Black left. While the first day's ride was rather uneventful, she had no real complaints about it. The scenery wasn't bad, and though she was still on guard in case things changed, the moment of peace before the coming job was welcome. As the sun began to set, Black found a place for them to make camp. Bryndis stretched briskly, a necessity after a whole day of travel. She then joined her companions seated by the fire.

Bryndis listened intently as Black began to explain how their encounter with the bandits would, or at least should, go. The idea was simple, Black would handle communications with them, and the rest of them were not to start any conflict with them. As for keeping her weapons on herself, that was no problem- she looked down at her swords, both resting neatly beside her. Black continued on about meeting with the leader and how to behave in their bandit camp. His planning was sound, and Bryndis took no issue with any of it.

He then when into detail about how the attack on the shipments would go. She watched as he drew two parallel lines into the dirt to indicate where the two paths were. Next they were divided into teams. She was to be paired with Vivian. Bryndis quickly glanced over at the woman and just as quick focused her attention back on Black who was finishing up his explanation. She nodded to him that she had heard it all and understood. As Black went to discuss his and Loke's plan of attack, Vivian called her.

Bryndis turned towards the Mind Walker, curious as to what she was thinking. Vivian detailed how Bryndis would need to proceed strategically. Close quarters combat was certainly her speciality, but under these circumstances it would definitely put the whole job at risk.
"I understand." Bryndis replied affirmatively, staring directly where Vivian's eyes would be if they were visible. She was to place herself near the edge of combat, near enough to the cart, and to eliminate any one who saw her. Her brow twitched slightly at that statement. If it could be helped, she'd rather not have to kill unnecessarily. She nodded lightly to herself, listening as Vivian continued on. Bryndis would hold her position until she heard the woman's voice. She nodded again. The Mind Walker attempted a smile, reassuring Bryndis' trust in her.
"Understood." Bryndis answered simply.

Bryndis took the third shift that night figuring it would be easier for her to get up come morning. She slept deeply until her shift, then lightly afterwards. The next morning, the four of them set off again. They had been travelling for a number of hours before their first encounter with the bandits. The low echo of a twig snapping was abruptly followed by a gruff shout from the woods. Bryndis scanned around quickly, but held her position.
