Shelby grew up in a rich and religious family. Her older brother Rory was always her hero, even when he turned to drugs. He stopped doing them, but there was a long period in her life from the age of eight to 13 when this was a huge problem for her family. This is when she began to be depressed. She began cutting and doubting God around the age of thirteen; lashing out at her parents and always trying to get out of church. After Rory got better, Shelby was still depressed and didn't know why. She kept cutting. Her parents found out from a teacher at school who Shelby had trusted with this information. They panicked and got her on antidepressants. Shelby neglected to take them, thinking that she was fine; this was just a teenage phase and she was scared of the side effects. She stayed depressed until one night she cut a lot and was bleeding, then overdosed on the pills she'd neglected to take before. The doctors saved her. She got signed up for The Hospice afterwards.
