Agent Qahtani is a slender woman of average height and weight and an olive complexion, who typically dresses in tailored dark suits and hijab scarfs that complement the color of her dress shirts. For formal occasions, she dresses in formal abaya. Amira has an oval-shaped face, full lips, round eyes, imperiously arched eyebrows, dark brown hair usually tucked under her hijab, and pleasant features. Though she seems unintimidating and quite approachable, Amira's specialty is interrogation.

History

Amira Qahtani immigrated to America at eight with her parents from Iraq, and was naturalized along with them at twelve, Amira's prowess as a witch was quickly recognized, and she was sent to Newton National Academy for the Magically Gifted, where she was a classmate of Ayasha Ziedins and Lisa Sheahan - Amira was a freshman while Ayasha and Lisa were seniors. After graduation, Amira attended Northwestern University with her nonmagical peers, and afterward, joined the MEA as a Special Agent. She was promoted to Asst. Special Agent in Charge of the MEA Wing City Field office two years ago, and in the wake of the Cameron Fields snafu, was appointed Acting Special Agent in Charge, pending his permanent termination.

Amira's magical specialty is in the area of psychic manipulation. She can sense another's surface thoughts, and in some senses, is an empath - outwardly displayed or strongly charged emotions will also affect her in the same way, whether she wants them to or not. She can adapt and focus psychic energies in battle as an attack, as well as subtly shape them during interrogations, to manipulate the subject at will. These abilities were enhanced while at Newton National, and later during special agent training at the MEA Training Academy.

Ayasha watched as the Inquisitor disappeared, breathing heavily as she finally lowered her sword, turning to Amira, who lay exhausted, drained on the floor. The Director reached her hand to her companion and pulled her to her feet, looking about. "It seems we have a more pressing problem," Ayasha commented, helping Amira from the room. "More pressing indeed." The psychic nodded slowly, not speaking as she began to recover. It would be an hours long process.

Wing City had never seemed so foreign. She didn't normally frequent bars, but for all its reputation, it was nearly impossible to avoid Gambit's for long. The slender, older woman opened the door and stepped inside just as a bloody saw blade hit a table. She adjusted her hijab, looking around at the other patrons with narrowed eyes. She thought she recognized Liesha Kennicot, but she wasn't sure exactly from where. Amira took a seat well away from the mayhem and looked down at the menu.

"Not a good time to be back," she muttered to herself, leaning against her elbow on the table.

Amira Qahtani ordered a cup of chai and sat back in her chair, quietly observing the others' conversations. This was her habit, culled from years of training for her position. In her line of work, it could be deadly to miss even a single word or twitch of the eye. Today, Amira was dressed in a muted cranberry-colored sweater and jeans, with a matching hijab scarf. Unassuming. Easy to become anonymous were it not for her photo in some press releases a while back. She had still not forgiven the reporter who decided to barge uninvited into her office.

Amira Qahtani nodded her thanks to Ixas, sipping her hot chai at regular intervals between perusing the emails on her Blackberry with her other hand. At the behest of Ayasha Ziedins, she had been reassigned permanently to Wing City, this time as the permanent SAC of the new MEB office. Different location, same city. She'd gotten lost four times before finally figuring out the way between her house and her office.

The Occupational Authority had delegated much of the unpleasant task of magic monitoring to the MEB. In Aschen-controlled parts, Amira had been authorized to eradicate any undesirables, i.e. magically-inclined beings who did not ascribe to Aschen protocols. It was not a pleasant mandate. The death threats were sure to begin any time soon. Amira took another sip of her chai. There was another email from a local reporter requesting an interview. Yeah, no. That was not happening. Amira glanced up for a moment, noting the entrance of John Doe, before returning her attention to her smartphone.

Amira Qahtani looked up as Aiyanna and Corimeth entered. Recognizing Aiyanna, Amira nodded to the Aschen artificial intelligence unit before returning to her Blackberry. As superior as Aschen technology might have been, Amira preferred using her familiar smartphone. She fiddled with the controls, reading through an email of another MEB agent reporting some unusual happenings elsewhere in Wing City. When weren't there unusual happenings? Amira almost chortled into her chai.

Amira Qahtani glanced up at Aiyanna again. "Likewise," she said in a neutral tone conveying neither emotion nor intent, before taking a long sip of her chai. She adjusted her hijab again, annoyed that the scarf wouldn't stay put. She would have to find a pin somewhere. Amira's lower lip curled over in a frown as she read the latest email from an agent not a few blocks away. Not everything was urgent in the world, she wanted to scream to the high heavens.

Amira Qahtani looked up, leaning back in her seat as she slid her Blackberry into her pocket. "Only in a very cursory, three sentence memo," Amira said, cupping her hands around her chai. "So is that why you came here? Official business?" There was a hint of disappointment in the woman's voice.

Amira Qahtani raised an eyebrow. "Thank you for that informative briefing," Amira said to Aiyanna's retreating back. She lifted her now-empty cup of chai. "Cheers."

Amira Qahtani ignored Yukiko, opening a copy of a local newspaper someone had left on another chair at her table. Funny. Sordid stories of crimes of passion and rumors of intergalactic conspiracies filled the pages of this paper. She stopped on page thirteen. Someone had snapped a photo of her leaving the MEB building. Beneath the photo was scathing editorial attacking the Aschen's stance on magic. Wonderful. Three months back in the city, and she was already a target.

"Qahtani," Amira answered, "of the ASC Magical Eradication Bureau." She regretted her words as soon as she had uttered them.

"The difficulty or ease of my agency's mandate is not your business," Amira said to Blackjack in a stiff tone. Her gaze slid over to Yukiko and she narrowed her eyes. "You ought to be careful who you talk to, where you go. There are many who would no doubt be happier if you were dead. Thankfully, I am not one of them."

Amira Qahtani 's eyebrow shot to the ceiling. "What did you call me?" Her voice came low and threatening, as the psychic immediately reached out with her mind throughout the entire bar, assessing the emotional states of everyone inside it out of habit. Amira stared down at Yukiko without a trace of compassion, seemingly oblivious to anyone else, including Blackjack beside her. It was late at night. No one would wonder if she did not stop by the MEB office later.

She was suddenly overcome by a wave of emotions. Staggering back a step, Amira ran her fingers across her face. "Khara," she muttered, closing her eyes and opening them again. She glanced about the bar, severed her psychic connection to its occupants, and fled after Yukiko and Blackjack. It had been a long day.

Amira Qahtani noticed the man's unsettling aura before she heard his footsteps or the clicking of his lighter. She had been sitting atop a few old crates beside a rusting dumpster, listening to the faint sounds of boisterous conversations inside Gambit's Bar at the end of the alley. The slender, dark-skinned woman was dressed in a conservative black suit and matching hijab scarf, fairly inconspicuous. Certainly not a head-turner. She decided to watch the man a few moments longer before doing or saying anything. She had no reason to speak to the stranger and, after all, she had only been off duty for less than half an hour.

"It's a dangerous place," came the quiet, low voice from behind him. It belonged to the older woman perched on the rotting wooden crate and carried with it the vaguest hint of an accent. "You're wise to avoid it." Amira slid off the crate, coming to a standing position about fifteen feet away from the stranger. "You live around here?" It never hurt to ask these days, particularly as she hadn't been here for quite some time after the Fields fiasco.

Amira Qahtani inclined her head, her eyes searching the man for the source of his bizarre aura. Something did not seem right. "I did a while ago but only returned about a month ago on assignment." The man's aura spiked and Amira's hand immediately went to her service weapon. She gave a forced smile, dropping her hand as soon as she realized she had moved. "Amira Qahtani," she introduced herself, "and you are?"

Amira Qahtani winced, cringing at the scent of blood. She knew very little about the Krieg, though of course she would not admit that to Serge. "It's possible," she admitted, sighing as she spoke, "but it certainly wasn't from me." Amira slid her hands into her pockets, looking alternately between Serge's face and the night sky behind him. She shivered. "The news media enjoys sullying a name, and when that doesn't suffice, it is often more than happy to incite violence and threats of violence. I've certainly received my fair share." A hint of bitterness crept into the woman's quiet voice.

She drew her lips into a thin line. The question was inevitable. And it wasn't a secret; the media and her own agency's press release a month ago had made sure of that. "I work for the Magical Eradication Bureau of the Aschen Confederation," she said, her hand once again dropping to her weapon, where it rested. "Previously I worked for the American Magical Enforcement Agency until its dissolution. Why do you ask?" She fixed the man with an unreadable stare, noting that his aura had stopped flaring.

"America was a nation-state which dissolved about five months ago and reorganized as a semi-autonomous state within the Aschen Confederation of Planets, gaining territory on the planet Outlook." Amira's eyes narrowed slightly. "The Aschen Confederation is a consolidation of semi-autonomous nation states under a single central government which acts on its own sovereignty. The MEB, however, only hires Aschen citizens, so if you were looking for a job, you would first have to be naturalized." She leaned against the stack of crates, regarding Serge warily.
