Darren Samson

Twenty-three is an awkward age. Puberty is long gone, and really you should have a job, but not this young man. He still busks and hopes to 'make it big'...

Description

Darren Samson Image

  • Darren Samson was born on the thirtieth of November, 1989 to Darren Samson Senior and Samantha Samson nee Rob. As queer as his little family may be, they are quite a close knit group and tend to exaggerate their affection in public as if to prove that their family cell is the closest and most interesting one out there.
  • Darren himself is a perky young man who often enjoys a spot of busking outside the local shopping centre or even Gambit's Bar (although he's been warned many a time not to risk it; some people just couldn't appreciate a bit of Brit). He has few close friends and many acquaintances from school and artist events he takes part in now and again, but feels that he is at that period in life where he requires more than the plucking of a guitar string to sate his dreams -- perhaps the plucking of some heartstrings is in order?
  • By no means unattractive, Darren has had his fair share of medium-term relationships, one night flings and 'the one' has been found several times already. According to one of his peers, the problem isn't that he's a commitmentphobe or a terrible boyfriend, but that he perhaps hasn't embraced his entire sexuality quite yet and just needs to broaden his horizons a bit if he wants to find the right person to settle down with (and, let's face it, he isn't going to find that person whilst busking on the streets or singing in run down pubs, is he? This isn't a romantic comedy).
  • Darren has a few quirks, the most obvious being that he's a complete Britney Spears fan. If he isn't singing Britney, he's singing someone who did a cover of Britney, and if he isn't singing that, he's probably eating or sleeping. This young man is intelligent, although not in the educated sense. He couldn't tell you how to factor a polynomial or write down the equation of a sine wave, but he's charismatic and quick on the uptake of practical skills. At school, home economics and technological studies were his forte.
  • As well as these few oddities, Darren also carries numerous legal pads with him, upon which he notes ideas, thoughts and feelings about particular sights, sounds or smells. He isn't quite sure why. Darren enjoys games of Noughts and Crosses, especially when they're impromptu - like on a foggy bus window or on some unsuspecting citizen's back - and tends to be fascinated by pans, the justification for which is that 'they're just so damn useful'. Finally, Darren abhors staring competitions. Not only does he think they're a waste of time, but he's had a lifelong fear of his eyes drying out midway through a competition and becoming blind. It is believed that stemmed from nightmares of a creepy kid at school who used to stare a lot, wherein the child would remove Darren's eyes with a Bagpuss spoon.
  • Finally, Darren has decided that his ultimate goal in life is to meet Britney Spears and be her backing vocals. Failing that, Darren has decided that he would quite happily settle for marrying a Brit-look-a-like, someone who loves Britney as much as he does, or someone who can stand him singing her songs and not become jealous about it.

So begins...

Darren shook his head with an accompanying shrug. “I’m fine,” he replied, voice lowered and face angled towards Cassie. “Whole gay thing gets me out of sorts sometimes – I’m fine with it, you know, I just… er… Well, nothing is wrong, put it that way.”

Like that didn’t sound as if he was scared of gay people or something equally daft.

“It’s fine, really.” With that said to reassure both himself and Cassie, Darren turned back to the group as a whole. “So… what is it that guys do? For a living, I mean?”

Whether he intended to or not, Darren didn’t so much as glance at Nathan whilst he spoke, instead seeming to prefer talking to Matthew, Cassie and Yasmin.

"Right -- I've seen that on the TV, but I'm assuming it's not so glamorous and there aren't really bad jokes linked to the way people die or anything... That always seemed really insensitive to me," he hummed absently before metaphorically shaking himself out of it.

"I guess it's nice that you've kept in touch since school," he added to Cassie (and partially to Nathan). "I don't think I've spoken to anyone I was in school with for a few years now. Most of my friends are other musicians or the folk that own the bars and pubs..." After trailing off for yet another moment of silence, Darren made to stand up from the table. "Excuse me a second; need to nip to the bathroom."

That said, to the bathroom he went to attempt composing himself. He knew how bad it looked that he could barely meet Nathan's eye, and he had to pull himself together and man up about it. It wasn't a big deal, he told himself.

Whilst all of the gossip was occurring in the room adjacent, Darren was staring himself out in the bathroom whilst leaning against a sink. He'd considered just locking himself in a stall for a while, but even though there wasn't a person present at the moment, it was all too likely that he'd come out composed and marginally pleased with himself, only to get a disgusted look from someone who'd thought he hadn't flushed. So, he decided that staring at himself in the mirror might get him going quicker, and it rather had.

When Darren eventually did walk out of the bathroom (hands washed, because he had been leaning on the sink and God only knew what happened in those sinks) and head back to the table in order to slip in beside Cassie once again, he seemed a bit more confident in himself.

"Sorry about that..." he apologised briefly, a momentary smile on his face when he turned his attention to the group -- including Nathan. "What were you all so engrossed in..?"

"Oh, that's a shame, that is. Maybe she'll come out with you next time. Next time you lot go out together, I mean, I certainly don't expect an invitation after - I have only know you all for a short time, right?"

Painfully awkward. That was what Darren was. Painfully awkward.

"So. Does anyone else need more drinks? On me? I'll easy go up if you need..?"

Darren Samson tilted his head at Cassie. "Make sure you wash your hands then... The men's room looked questionable at best," he joked -- it was an awful joked, but still! No one said he was funny!

Turning to Nathan, Darren gave a tiny little smile that was mostly embarrassed and partly amused. "Well... You're probably all going to laugh at me, but I really like Britney Spears. Failing that, most modern female musicians... Except Lady Gaga, I haven't a clue what her songs are on about half the time, so..."

"I don't think I've ever listened to a Bullet for my Valentine song the entire way through, but I know a couple of 30 Seconds to Mars songs... and yes, I will disdain you when you say you like rap," Darren added with a shake of his head at Matt. "What is wrong with you? Since when is talking fast anything but an annoyance?" the musician asked, all thorough amusement -- liking rap, that was laughable! Darren shared a Look (with a capital L) with Nathan and grimaced.

"Does he rap to you? Is it worse than the 'professionals'?"

"If I had to choose between rap and orchestral music, I'd go for the orchestral music. I prefer the earlier kinds of orchestra, though -- when it gets to the Romantic and Late Romantic periods, the orchestra gets too big and it sounds like it's just got so much going on and no one has a clue how to make it work together. In my opinion, I mean. But I'm glad you don't rap," Darren added to Matthew. "That would be worrying, if you did. And I may have to ignore you if you try to," he smiled.

"I play an acoustic guitar. I do own a few different guitars - bass and electric, and a twelve-string -- but I prefer my acoustic guitar. It's got a better sound."

"It's okay, Cassie. Singing in the shower is okay. Rapping in the shower isn't. Thanks, by the way," he added, picking up the virgin drink. "So, do you really just play for yourself?" Darren asked, tilting his head at Nathan. "Haven't you thought about doing something live - it's a great rush, even if it isn't decent pay. Not so great if you happen to be near a drunken hen party -- or a stag do, for that matter -- but that's a risk you've got to take."

"All work and no play makes you no fun," Darren interjected with a stately nod. "Not that I would know - I don't think I've ever worked for an entire week straight... if you can call what I do work. Don't you have assistants or something that you could put all of the menial work onto or something? When I worked at the restaurant down Main Street in Wing City, they always made the waiters clean up the kitchen after as opposed to the chefs doing it. Saved money and meant that the 'money-makers' didn't have to overtax themselves..."

Darren still thought that, without waiters, the chefs wouldn't even have a business, but...

"That's just focus," Darren waved off. "But maybe you should stay away from coffee or whatever vitamins you're taking," the absent young man joked. "Or your could take a work break? I don't know if they let you do that or not in proper jobs... D'you think so?" Darren then asked Cassie. "Are people just allowed to take holidays, or are you supposed to... book these things?"

"You should get checked by a doctor," Darren added helpfully. "You don't want to work yourself to death. That would be really sad." The young man paused to take a drink and direct a cheeky smile towards the girls at the table. "Maybe you should keep an eye on him. If he starts to request days off and wants to go out clubbing, surely those are signs of death by work."

Darren Samson hid a very distasteful laugh behind his glass and rolled his eyes. "Do you always argue with one another, or do you get along sometimes..?" he asked.

Considering that he'd been overly embarrassed and entirely certain that they all thought he was a terrible homophobic person, it was nice that he'd managed to relax this much.

"So..."

Darren Samson shook his head with a smile. "No, no. It's nice to hear about this kind of group dynamic - I've not been in that kind of group for a few years; all of my friends are in different circles, you know? But you're the boss?" the musician asked with a coy raise of an eyebrow that, to some, might've been interpreted as vaguely flirtatious -- not that Darren meant it in that sense, of course. "That's interesting. Why are you the overworked one if you're the boss? Haven't you heard of delegation?"

Darren kept his goodbyes polite and brief -- it'd have been weird if he seemed too sad to see them go, right? They were both pretty damn funny, he had to admit.

Still, they had walked out the door, and Darren turned a smile that froze on those remaining. Oh dear. The good-looking girl and the good-looking guy. Awkward-sauce.

"Maybe she'll ask him to babysit with her. Or is that too nineties?" he joked, rubbing at the back of his neck before going ahead and just drinking the last of his very non-alcoholic juice. "So... Um. Anything... interes -- sorry, I can't; I feel like I'm blundering through this conversation like a numpty."

Go all awkward again, Darren did, but it wasn't so bad as it had been the first time. Instead, a rather bashful blush rose on his cheeks as he scowled back at Nathan before leaning over to Cassie. "You said he wouldn't flirt with a strai -- ooh..."

Okay. So maybe they knew. "Um. Okay. Yeah, no teasing the 'new guy' -- although I do have a name, remember? Darren? Darren Samson."

"That's better."

The blush darkened when Nathan spoke and started to creep towards his ears, but Darren strove onwards with the conversation! "I like cooking," he admitted with a nod. "I took home economics at school and I was pretty good at the cooking part. The sewing part, not so much, but I did my best. I like playing Tic-Tac-Toe, too."

Darren Samson nodded at Cassie, grateful for the distraction of Tic-Tac-Toe (because really, he was a genius on nine-squares) and the thought of culinary expertise, which he was far from but close enough to reach. "The girls I usually cook for don't care for a guy being all that good at it. I think they consider it weird -- I thought it was romantic, but 'parently a lot of the things I think are romantic are strange," he said with a pointed look at Cassie -- let's just forget the blushing.

Blinking, Darren tilted his head at the pair. "Ooh. So I wasn't the only one to feel like a complete and utter idiot after, then? She thought I was being a freaky fan... Do you always invite the losers you shoot down on group outings, or am I special?" Now that was definitely a bit of flirting there. "Or were you hoping to set me up with someone else so that I'd not end up embarrassing you again?" And that was some form of casual joke intertwined with a strange look towards Nathan. Very strange.

Darren Samson wasn't sure if he should feel good about being 'not quite as up' himself as most of the weird people who would no doubt harass Cassie or no. "I'll take that as a compliment... I think. And... uh, I dunno. It was just a suggestion," he shrugged, absently matching Cassie's movement as he turned his head towards Nathan.

For a long moment, Darren scrutinised the older man. "You have a nose on your face."

Darren Samson hunched his shoulders up close to his ears at the look the two were directing towards him. "What? It wasn't -- look, I wasn't staring or anything... and you do have a nose on your face, it's not like you can deny that, so... What's wrong with you people? Accusing folk of all sorts of things." By this point, that flush of pinkish red had returned with a vengeance and Darren was scowling at the ceiling.

"Seriously..."
