Darren Samson

Twenty-three is an awkward age. Puberty is long gone, and really you should have a job, but not this young man. He still busks and hopes to 'make it big'...

Description

Darren Samson Image

  • Darren Samson was born on the thirtieth of November, 1989 to Darren Samson Senior and Samantha Samson nee Rob. As queer as his little family may be, they are quite a close knit group and tend to exaggerate their affection in public as if to prove that their family cell is the closest and most interesting one out there.
  • Darren himself is a perky young man who often enjoys a spot of busking outside the local shopping centre or even Gambit's Bar (although he's been warned many a time not to risk it; some people just couldn't appreciate a bit of Brit). He has few close friends and many acquaintances from school and artist events he takes part in now and again, but feels that he is at that period in life where he requires more than the plucking of a guitar string to sate his dreams -- perhaps the plucking of some heartstrings is in order?
  • By no means unattractive, Darren has had his fair share of medium-term relationships, one night flings and 'the one' has been found several times already. According to one of his peers, the problem isn't that he's a commitmentphobe or a terrible boyfriend, but that he perhaps hasn't embraced his entire sexuality quite yet and just needs to broaden his horizons a bit if he wants to find the right person to settle down with (and, let's face it, he isn't going to find that person whilst busking on the streets or singing in run down pubs, is he? This isn't a romantic comedy).
  • Darren has a few quirks, the most obvious being that he's a complete Britney Spears fan. If he isn't singing Britney, he's singing someone who did a cover of Britney, and if he isn't singing that, he's probably eating or sleeping. This young man is intelligent, although not in the educated sense. He couldn't tell you how to factor a polynomial or write down the equation of a sine wave, but he's charismatic and quick on the uptake of practical skills. At school, home economics and technological studies were his forte.
  • As well as these few oddities, Darren also carries numerous legal pads with him, upon which he notes ideas, thoughts and feelings about particular sights, sounds or smells. He isn't quite sure why. Darren enjoys games of Noughts and Crosses, especially when they're impromptu - like on a foggy bus window or on some unsuspecting citizen's back - and tends to be fascinated by pans, the justification for which is that 'they're just so damn useful'. Finally, Darren abhors staring competitions. Not only does he think they're a waste of time, but he's had a lifelong fear of his eyes drying out midway through a competition and becoming blind. It is believed that stemmed from nightmares of a creepy kid at school who used to stare a lot, wherein the child would remove Darren's eyes with a Bagpuss spoon.
  • Finally, Darren has decided that his ultimate goal in life is to meet Britney Spears and be her backing vocals. Failing that, Darren has decided that he would quite happily settle for marrying a Brit-look-a-like, someone who loves Britney as much as he does, or someone who can stand him singing her songs and not become jealous about it.

So begins...

After a few seconds, Darren's eyes lowered to the table and then wandered off to the side whilst a worried little look crossed his face instead. His shoulders were still rather tense, although they had lowered, and whatever it was that had made him so damn uncomfortable at the start of the evening had wandered back in.

This was where he closed the closet door and stared at it for a while, right?

"You're kind of a jerk."

It took Darren a good couple of minutes to realise exactly what Nathan had said other than "I am leaving and I'm using work as an excuse." Snow... Well, he'd heard enough jokes about a guy being so far in the closet he was in Narnia, but -- he couldn't quite recall a time when something like a joke had been twisted into something that sounded so scathing in his ears.

Swallowing in order to wet a mouth that was rather dry for all he had just been drinking, Darren too got up from his seat and made his way from the table -- to go hide in the bathroom again. Really, this bathroom nonsense was getting utterly ridiculous, but it wasn't like he could leave when the two were right there, and being called out like that -- in front of someone, too -- wasn't exactly a peaceful experience... mostly because no one had actually said it out loud before.

"I need to go."

One minute, he'd been in the half-empty bathroom (there'd been a rather alarmed looking guy washing his hands whilst his son hovered impatiently by the door when Darren had swept in, face red and fingers flexing) and pacing back and forth (it hadn't taken long for the father-son pair to leave) whilst trying to figure it all out in his head, and the next he'd been stalking back to his table, which was yet another member of the group short, visibly upset or perhaps even angered.

"I just -- sorry, but I need to go. Do you need me to... walk you home or something or -- I just need to go."

Darren didn't say a word until he'd tucked the receipt away in a pocket and taken a long, steadying breath. "I'm sorry," he muttered, eyes not quite meeting Cassie's, "and I've been an idiot tonight and ruined it for you, but... I'm not very good at handling things and when people just--" He stopped to give an irritated wave of a hand, gesturing to show he couldn't find the words. "It felt a lot more personal than it was probably meant to be and I just don't know how I was meant to take it or what. Guess it's kind of obvious why."

Darren Samson shook his head with a rueful smile. "I guess it was stupid of me to think that it wasn't obvious - I'm not sly. But you're right. I shouldn't be talking to you about it, but it's just easier when someone can't leave you, d'you know what I mean? If you didn't like it and you left, I wouldn't feel the difference and -- I'm waffling. I'm going to go now. Tell Nathan I'm sorry too, please and... well, I'll call you later. To make up for tonight."

That said, Darren patted Cassie's shoulder in the most awkward of manners before turning towards the door and heading out. S'long as another military force wasn't trying to own Wing City again, he figured he'd be safe enough.

“Oh baby, can’t you see I’m calling? Someone like you should wear a warning! It’s dangerous; I’m falling.”

This song didn’t deviate quite as drastically as the first had. All Darren had done was lower it to his key and made sure that the lyrics were suitably ambiguous; anyone could sing this song.

“There’s no escape – I can’t wait. I need a hit, oh baby, gimme it. You’re dangerous and I’m lovin’ it.”

He was by no means a talented dancer, but the mere presence the tall, lithe young man held over those who watched him was what made him such a great live performer. No matter how much he tapped, spun, gyrated and wriggled, Darren’s voice was near pitch-perfect.

“With the taste of your lips I’m on a ride; you’re toxic, I’m slipping under. With the taste of a poison paradise, I’m addicted to you; don’t you know that you’re toxic?”

A few beats would pass before Darren started up again, during which he simply swayed his hips back and forth and leant towards the growing number of dancers on the dance floor.

“And I love what you do; don’t you know that you’re toxic?”

Finally, the song finished and, at half-past nine, after three and a half hours of non-stop singing and occasionally playing for himself, Darren stepped off the stage and reclaimed his guitar as the CD-player took over musical entertainment for the evening.

"I thought that went well," Darren grinned as he passed the manager, who was standing at the foot of the stage.

"It was... fine for you," was the half-arsed response, which nonetheless had Darren smiling as he went out into the crowd -- he was almost certain he'd seen a familiar face.

Indeed attracted by Cassie's gestures, Darren soon wandered over and spent a good few minutes listening and blinking redundantly at Alice - body art wasn't all that strange, but all over body art kinda was.

"Thanks... I think -- it's nice to meet you," the young man nodded at the strange woman. "It's nice to see you again, too," he added towards Cassie. The then added 'both of you' was accompanied with a look towards Nathan.

He settled into a seat and, after propping his guitar against the table, looked at his companions. "So... Have you all been busy, then, or... y'know. Not busy?"

He wasn't quite sure if the others could tell (but given past experience, they seemed to be tell everything else, so why not this) that, despite the adrenaline rush he was just coming down from, he was feeling just the slightest bit awkward around one particular member of the group -- and it wasn't the weird-looking one.

"Sounds like a pretty busy week, then," Darren commented - not that he knew what a busy week was to a reporter or crime scene investigator, but it sure sounded like it might've been a bit excitable at the work-place. "That's a shame, though, that you're on leave," he added with an awkward nod towards Nathan. "From what I heard last week, you're a workaholic, so..."

Darren shrugged his shoulders at Cassie's enquiry and shook his head. "Nothing much has happened, actually. I've had a couple of small sets at bars around the city, but nothing major. This is the longest set I've had so far, and I was here on Tuesday, too, so I haven't been bored between arranging, practice and then the actual sets themselves. Speaking of which - I should really go and get changed; I smell like alcohol and it's not pleasant. I'll just be two minutes," he promised as he stood and gestured to hi guitar. "Playing that for three hours can make you smell a bit too," the musician joked before turning to head in the direction of the raised stage, where there was no doubt some form of tiny changing room and bathroom lurking.

As promised, Darren was soon back at the table, albeit in different clothing - where he had been wearing a pair of baggy jeans and a loose t-shirt (you can try dancing in clothing any tighter and see how it goes), he was now wearing a tailored, purple shirt and a pair of black jeans that weren't quite so unfitted as the previous pair - and smelling like some range of aftershave. He settled down in his seat once again and considered those at the table.

"You're talking about work again? You all seem to do that a lot -- not that I can tell with you, Alice, since I've just met you, but it seems to be a theme wherever Nathan is concerned."

Yep. Darren was 'playing it cool'.

Darren Samson blinked first at Nathan, then at Cassie. "Wait, what? What happened with the camera guy? Contrary to popular belief, I'm not a fan so much as aware of your existence, so I don't watch you on the television," he prompted. He took upon a faux-concerned expression and leant towards Cassie. "Did your cameraman point his camera where it wasn't wanted? Are you okay..?"

"That can be a very traumatic experience!" Darren crowed, thoroughly amused. "I know a really good therapist. Well, it's my Mum, actually, but I'm pretty sure she's still a good therapist regardless of family ties. You could talk about how violated you felt and work past the fear that it might happen again and everything!"

Smiling away to himself, Darren nodded at Nathan. "If the anchorwoman was laughing a lot, maybe that means that you're also feeling humiliated? Like an object?"

Darren Samson snorted, shaking his head. "How does a cameraman trip, anyway? I thought they were meant to stand still and keep their lens on the reporter's face. Not down their bra," he hummed with a smile. "And I bet it wouldn't be that difficult to plaster someone's face on a newspaper... Not that you do anything questionable or anything - I'm pretty sure you don't do anything like that."

Idly scratching the bridge of his nose, Darren gestured towards the bar. "Anyone fancy a drink?" he asked, eyebrows raised in question.

“I’m sure that there’s no garbage coming around here,” the musician laughed. “And I figured you’d be driving – you should really try lightening up a bit. Alcohol isn’t all that bad,” he reasoned.

“Right, so wine, coke and water—sure thing! I’ll be back in a second,” Darren smiled as he stood. “Try not talking about work whilst I’m getting drinks. I think you all should forget about work – what with it being crime and the clearly traumatic experience of an alcoholic being taken advantage of by her cameraman, who surely a reporter should be able to trust... I digress – wine, coke and water. Okay. I’ll be right back,” he said as he moved towards the bar. “I mean it, no work-talk,” was thrown over his shoulder.

Darren Samson soon returned with two glasses full of non-alcoholic liquid, a bottle of half-decent beer and a dainty wine glass. "I could drive, you know," he said pointedly at Nathan as he placed the drinks on the table. "And you could loosen up a bit - unless you're on some form of pain medication for your arm. I know you're not supposed to mix alcohol and drugs, but if it's an old wound I figure that maybe it doesn't hurt all that much..? I dunno, I'm waffling," Darren said with a shake of his as he returned himself to his seat. "Where'd Cassie go?" Darren then asked with an eyebrow raised. "And why did you end up covered in punch..?"

Darren Samson nodded. "Oh... well, that's... believable, yes? I don't think anyone is better when they're on the drink, right? I know I get a bit - er - clingy? I think that's the word, anyway. Very clingy, needy and so on."

He shook his head and picked up his bottle of beer. "So did you like the set, then? I'm assuming you did if you're still here," he grinned.

Grinning like a girly-girl who just got a compliment was on the agenda tonight, it would seem. "Well, I'm not that old yet - I'm only twenty-three. I still have the occasional pub-crawl with a few mates, and you just can't not get drunk on a pub-crawl."

Darren peered at Alice for a second before replacing his beer on the table. "I have to ask what those tattoos are. They've been -- not annoying me, so to speak. Intriguing, that's the word. I haven't a clue what it's meant to be, and usually you can tell, but I really can't tell... And thanks, Nathan."

"You mean you're not thirty years older than I am?" Darren asked, fake shock lining his voice. "Shock and horror abound." Still, Darren grinned away to himself as he turned to Alice. "Oh, right. I've seen people with a few lines of writing before, but never..." He gestured towards the woman with a nod. "It's unique; I like it."

When Cassie returned, Darren had to frown just to match her -- that didn't sound like fun at all. Imagine getting called out of a night out to go work... It'd never happened to him, of course, but still. "That's not good -- I'll call you sometime," he insisted with a small smile. "See you later." The young man waved as Cassie departed.

"So if you had got that call, you'd still be here?" Darren asked with a shit-eating grin as he looked at Nathan. "I bet Cassie had to drag you out."

Darren Samson tilted his head, the bridge of his nose wrinkled in mild confusion. "Yeah... I thought that the CSI folk only turned up once all the action had happened. Although I suppose that maybe if you were the one who found out where a murderer was, you would be saving potential lives that way, right?" Darren shook his head and let it go -- it was just a theoretical comment anyhow. Still, it was weird...

"So... When you're not out investigating crime scenes, what do you do?"

Darren Samson nodded his head as Nathan spoke. He knew that - kind of. He watched CSI just like everybody else did! "Oh, right. So just the guitar and reading? That seems pretty tame for someone who used to get covered in punch... and for someone who knows Matthew, for that matter. I'd have thought that he'd get you out and about a lot more often than you would do if you were just yourself?"

"Sometimes I think everyone should have just a day or two every now and then when they can just let go and actually do fun things for a change," Darren nodded, attempting a wise expression as he drank from his bottle -- of beer, not a baby's bottle, obviously. "What d'you mean by different regards?" he then asked, voice and face all innocent in sound and appearance. "You're not sensible... somewhere else?"
