Hugo Maxwell

Reluctant kin of the werewolves.

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by ConnorTavarin

Description

Name: Hugo Maxwell
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Species: Werewolf
Place of Birth: Lutetia

Background: Born into an upper-class family of followers of the church, Hugo lived his life among the elite of Lutetia and as raised as a 'proper' member of society. However, Hugo never liked the pompous, arrogant nature of his peers at the church, especially when it came to the supernatural. He believed that anything living and breathing deserved a chance at life, an attitude that earned him scorn amongst the priests and even his own family.. While he knew there were those among the supernatural who were undoubtedly sadistic and cruel, he knew there were those who just wanted to live a peaceful, normal life. His dream was to one day convince members of the church that their ideas were antiquated and foolish. Unfortunately those plans were dashed. One day on his way home from university, he was suddenly attacked by a feral werewolf, too far gone to be helped. Knowing he stood no chance against the wolf, he ran in vain. The werewolf effortlessly grabbed him, biting him on his shoulder. If it weren't for another werewolf attacking the one that bit him, he would have been torn apart. As they fought, Hugo ran away, covering his wound and whispering curses to himself. He threw on his coat to hide the injury as he bought first aid supplies. After wrapping the wound, he went home, neglecting to mention anything to his family.

He eventually forgot about the incident and went about his business. However, as the weeks went by he started to feel strange. Fevers set in, as did muscle pains. After the third week, his family was horrified to find him in the middle of his first transformation into a werewolf. The extreme pain from the ordeal almost killed him, but he miraculously retained his sanity. His parents feigned worry and said comforting words, though they were far from sincere. Within the next week, an assassin tried to murder Hugo in his sleep, but his superior senses and reflexes caught the assassin off guard and was easily taken down by Hugo. Hearing the commotion, his parents rushed up, his father carrying a revolver loaded with silver bullets, cursing the assassin for his failure. Horrified that his parents would take illegal measures to have him silenced, Hugo leaped from the window, his new-found athleticism making maneuvering the rooftops relatively simple.

Eventually, Hugo was discovered by the Bloodstone pack, who offered him shelter. He reluctantly agreed but refused to associate himself with anything they did, keeping to himself most of the time. This time alone has almost driven him insane due to the intense feeling of loneliness. He needed to belong to the pack. He needed a family again, but he didn't want to be considered family by them. His goal was to change the way the church viewed supernatural beings, but he finally realized that no matter what he did, that would now be more impossible than ever with his affliction. He wanted to belong, but he wanted to be cured at the same time so he can be accepted by his family again. Even so, he worried if he's becoming like that xenophobic clergy with how he's been behaving towards the ones that have offered him shelter and arguably saved his life. Hugo promised himself that he would eventually do something for them. It was the least he could do to prove his appreciation.

Werewolf Abilities
Heightened Senses: His hearing and sense of smell are superb, making him an excellent tracker whenever he decides to put his abilities to use.
Improved Strength: While not as strong as his natural born brethren, Hugo is still physically stronger than he would be normally.
Regeneration: Minor injuries recover within hours, but serious wounds take days to recover.
Transformation: While he doesn't like to do so, Hugo is capable of transforming into a bipedal wolf at will and is forced to on full moons. His transformation isn't hulking or brutish, but more athletic and fit for a scout. He is known to go into hiding each full moon to avoid being seen by anyone.
Likes: Apples, well-prepared meat, being accepted by humans, reading, drawing, art in general.
Dislikes: Being called family by other werewolves, his 'curse,' violence.

Appearance: A tall young man standing at 6'4", Hugo has styled, medium-length hair and striking, light blue eyes that seem to glow slightly. He hides his eyes through wearing round-framed, dark-lens glasses. His frame is best described as lanky, with long arms and legs along with his fit musculature. Hugo has a slight stubble on his face, which he tends to keep short. His expression is usually anywhere between a concerned look or a gentle smile, though the latter is usually only seen by those he's taken a liking to. Due to his upbringing, his clothing consists of a white collared undershirt and ornate purple coat along with a loose yellow tie. His only footwear is a pair of long leather work boots, which seems to clash with his overall noble appearance.

Hugo kept to himself in another lonely booth in the room, reading a book. As he read, he thought to himself why he has such a desire to assist the pack in any way he could. For the longest time he wouldn't even show up at meeting places unless he was required to do so for an important gathering. However, the crippling loneliness finally got to him and he decided to show up here for once. Despite this, he kept to himself still, not knowing anyone in this room. He sighs, putting a bookmark in and closing the book with an audible noise, sliding it into his coat pocket. The glow of his deep blue eyes was slightly obscured by the round, dark shades he wore.

He stands up and decides to sit at the bar counter instead. He takes out a pocket watch that was thankfully not made of silver and opened it, showing a photo of him and his parents from days gone past. Closing it angrily, he cursed under his breath "What does it matter if I'm man or wolf? I was still their son. They sent a damn assassin after me." he muttered to himself. He grabs a beer and pours himself a glass, giving it a drink, shaking his head at the taste. "Mmph, no wonder I don't drink often." he chuckled slightly, but decides to finish the glass anyway. He thought he may have been a bit overdressed in his white collared shirt and purple coat, but it was all he had on him. Once he found a job he would probably purchase more casual wear. Glancing around the bar, he noticed many people in conversation, not sure who to talk to. He was still nervous about talking to anyone really. He wanted to find a cure, not get used to being in this pack, but he knew that it was for the best if he made at least one friend here.

It's been a week since Hugo ran away from his home. After his first transformation, his parents secretly hired assassins to kill him in an attempt to dispose of him before his werewolf side was revealed to the public. He couldn't believe they would do that. His parents may have been extremely religious, but to carry out the murder of their own son? It convinced him even more that the church has done nothing but spread hatred and distrust, but there wasn't much he could do about that, especially not like this.

Currently, he wandered a forest away from the prying eyes of Lutetia's people. He was offered a chance to join the Bloodstone pack, which he agreed to reluctantly. For now, he needed time alone. He couldn't accept that he was now a werewolf. It ruined all of his plans and his chance to change the minds of the church. "Who am I kidding? They never would have listened." he mutters to himself as he continues his stroll. He looks up at the moon. "Hello new friend." he said with a sad smile. He looked at the palm of his hand, his nails sharper for a split second before reverting to normal. He sighs deeply as he leaned against a tree.

"Oh. Um. Hello," came a voice from the tree the man was leaning against. A woman looked down at him from its thick, sprouting branches, her blonde hair hanging down the sides of her cheeks. She held a bow in her hands, but none of the arrows from her quiver were loaded, and she didn't seem threatening. "I'm hoping you're not another drunk wandering out into the forest at this hour. The sirens have been antsy lately and drunk men are more easily tempted," she called down.

Swathed in a heavy fur jacket, it was hard to discern any other features of the woman besides the multitude of stitches down one side of her face. It looked as though something had swiped a meaty set of claws over her eye.

Hugo looked up at the woman who called down to him, immediately noticing the scars and winced slightly behind his glasses. Did a werewolf do that to her? What would she think if she knew what he was? Questions and worry swim through his mind as he answered nervously "U-uh, no! I'm not a drunk. Just...just someone who's lost their way, that's all." he said, shame evident in his voice. "My name is Hugo Maxwell! What is yours?" he said, adjusting his glasses to hide his eyes. He was dressed in his usual attire, albeit it was rather dirty from a week on the streets. He tried dusting off his coat. "I haven't spoken to anyone in over a week...thanks for the warning about the sirens." he said, trying to add to the conversation

"Maela Fay. I'm a ranger working for the Society. Do you need help?" she called, tilting her head to the side. I know these woods like an alcoholic knows his beer. I can get you out quick, if you like. It's dangerous here. Lots of creatures who'd like to do you harm. Witches and sirens and walking cadavers. You wouldn't want to walk into any of them."

Slowly, she began to descend from the tree, but stopped at a branch above Hugo's head. "For all I know, you're a nasty brute, so I'll be keeping my distance until I'm sure." She gave him a wink. "I'm not alive in Lutetian woods for no reason."

He gulped slightly when he heard that she was part of the Society. "T-The Society, huh?" he said. Looking around, he realized he had wandered around a bit too much and knew it would be hard to get out safely on his own. Turning away from her, he sniffed, hoping his new senses would have a use. He detected the faint scent of the city, laughing nervously, trying to hide that fact "I think I can make it on my own...though having an escort would be ideal, yes!" he said. "So, the Society? I've read stories about them and how they protect us from the supernaturals that would do us harm. Mindless undead for instance." he said, walking forward. He had always admired them in the sense they hunted down the supernatural beings that committed horrible acts of violence. It wasn't like the church, who hated every being that wasn't what they considered normal. Throughout the forest, Hugo heard the sounds of animals running through the forest. He tightened his grip around a tree branch and wiped sweat from his brow. He shook his head "Warm out tonight..." he said quietly.

"Aye, we do all that," smiled Maela. "Though, that's normally the Slayers and Hunters. Rangers like me scout and report, mostly. I try to avoid conflict where I can," she told him.

After surveying the area briefly, she hopped down from the branch and landed on her feet in a deep squat. She bounced back up with springy knees. "Ready? You're not too tired?" Maela inquired. She drew an arrow from the quiver on her back and knocked it, but kept the brow directed to the ground. She began to walk ahead of him, but kept her eyes on him and the forest. "Warm? Really? I didn't notice," she chuckled, pulling up her hood.

He paused for a moment, realizing that he sounds a bit suspicious. He cursed his instinct to hunt, trying hard to keep his mind focused on getting back to the city. "M-My parents were highly religious...didn't care much for your group. Said you were soft on the minions of hell. Never liked that about them, personally. In fact...the supernatural fascinated me." he said as they walked. He looked towards the ground "I don't think I'll be seeing them that much anymore...considering they almost got me killed." he stopped and punched a tree "It wasn't my fault, dammit!" he screamed. He took a deep breath and tried to control his aggression. "I'm sorry...I just got a bit too emotional there." he said, continuing his walk and maintaining an awkward silence.

The ranger narrowed her eyes at the man's sudden outburst. Her fingers danced along her bow, but she didn't make a move to lift it. "You... sound like you have a lot of... personal problems there. You sure you don't want to rest? Maybe you're dehydrated? Hungry? Are you hurt anywhere?"

Maela wasn't sure of the nature of this man. He could have been anything. Anyone. For all she knew, he was an undead raised by a witch trying to trick her.

Wouldn't have been the first time.

Hugo runs his hands through his hair in frustration, sighing deeply as he sits down at the base of a tree. He started to realize that people will realize he's not human eventually. "To be honest I'm starving....and I'm not hurt, unless you count my soul." he slowly removes his glasses, showing that his eyes had a strange glow to them. He laughs nervously, almost as if he just broke down "I-I'm not human...I'm not human." the stress, the betrayal of his family, his affliction, it was all too much for him. He looked up at the moon, palm over his eyes in a futile attempt to hide his tears "T-That feral werewolf took everything from me! I would have been dead if it weren't for another one attacking it. Part of me wishes it was just a little bit too late. I can't live as a werewolf I...I was meant to convince the church that they were wrong about supernaturals! I can't do that as one of them!" Hugo just sat there, sobbing as everything felt like it fell apart.

"The church? The church has a long standing hate against supernaturals since before Lutetia was established. You should know better," Maela grumbled. She didn't seem perturbed knowing the man was a werewolf. Better than anything else, though she did err on the side of caution.

"I'm really not one to council someone who's not doing well emotionally, ah... it's not my shtick. But if you don't pick yourself off and follow me you'll have more worries than living as a werewolf. You'll have a hard time living at all. Come on." She nodded towards the city. "Let's go. You can figure things out once we get there. Okay? There's werewolves everywhere. Supernaturals everywhere. Even I'm not human. So let's go."

Trying to regain his composure, he stands up. He was a little surprised to hear that she wasn't human, though it did make sense in a way. He wipes away his tears and puts his glasses back on, sighing "Forgive me...this isn't the place for me to get lost in my troubles. You're right, let's go." he says, following her closely.

He thought about what she said, about the church hating supernaturals since the beginning. She was right. They weren't just going to change or question their long-standing beliefs. "You may be right about the church. I just hoped there were reasonable people within its ranks that would actually stop and think about their antiquated hatred." he said. Soon the city was within view "Thank you for the escort, Maela." he said, sighing as he looked toward the city "I don't know where to go. I wandered around on my own for a week before I starts stumbling about in the forest. I'm going to need someplace to stay...and as much as I'd hate to admit it, it seems like I'll have to fall in with one of the packs."

Maela rose the corner of her lip in disgust, but while she was turned away from Hugo. When she turned around to look at him briefly, her face had become neutral again. "As you are now, you're better off without them."

Possibly better in the woods than in a church, too, Maela thought, peering deeply into the darkest areas of the woods. Shadows danced at the sides of her vision. Every time she turned around to look directly at it, it was gone. So were the woods, typically at night.

"I'm not a city dweller. My sister is, though. If you're dropping in with a pack... well, make sure it's one of the better ones. As a Society member, even if I'm not a Hunter or Slayer, it's my duty to keep an eye out for anyone who wants to break the law, too."

Hugo had said his goodbyes to Maela Fay, thanking her for helping him get back to the city. He didn't know who to consider 'good' or the lesser of the evils when it came to the packs, so he was really lost. Wandering the city, he remembered that he was pretty hungry. He sighed, digging into his coat pocket "Of course I don't have my wallet..." he said, rather annoyed. Still, he kept looking around for any sign of someone who would could point him in the right direction. Who should he join? What friends should he make and who should he keep away? This whole life on the outside felt alien to him.

"Right on the edge of town? What does he look like?" spoke a young woman into her flip phone, a hand running through her hair. She rounded a corner right in time, staring right at Hugo. "Uhuh. Yeah. Yeah, I get who you're talking about. Alright, I'll see. Cya." Snapping the phone shut, she began to approach the man.

The young woman was a petite, small-shouldered thing with a lot of hair. Her eyes were like two large almonds staring up at him with intense scrutiny.

"Is your name Hugo?" she asked him, voice smooth and rolling. She held similar traits to Maela- the pointed chin, round nose, full lips- but it was a subtle similarity.

A little startled by the person who knew his name, he looks at the woman, nodding "Yes, my name is Hugo. You look kind of like someone I met just a while ago...do you know Maela Fay? Relative perhaps?" he asks. "Anyway, do you think you can help me with something? See..." he looks around, making sure no one else was around. "...I was human, emphasis on the was...then a werewolf attack happened. You can probably figure out the rest. My family almost murdered me with an illegal assassin and silver bullets, I'm starving, have no where to stay, and have no idea where to start looking. I'm desperate." he said, chuckling nervously. He scratches the back of his head, a sad expression on his face "I've just lost everything. I need any help or support I can get right now. I'm just some church-raised kid who happened to fall far from the tree so to speak. Even so, I have no idea how the world of supernatural beings works."

"Oh. Wow. Um... wow, yeah, that's a lot to take in at once," said the girl, nodding. "Maela is my sister. I'm Ilvey. Um, let's see. I can try and hook you up with someone, but there's not a lot I can do for you personally. I don't have much, myself. Here, c'mon... maybe if you go to The Den. You know that place, right? It's in... Vargeras."

"Look, I'm sorry for the rushed explanation. I just need a place where I can rest my head." he said at Ilvette's reaction to his explanation. When she suggested The Den, he seemed hesitant "The Den...? I've heard things about that place, and some of them weren't good. Are you sure that's the best place for me to go right now?" he asked. Before she could answer, he shakes his head "No, no...you're right. That's probably a good place. Do you mind showing me the way? I don't know where it is off the top of my head." he said. His stomach growls as he puts a hand over it, groaning slightly "I haven't had a decent meal in over a week..." he chuckles slightly.

He thinks about the possibility of finding the werewolf who rescued him. How would he react? Would he curse him for having him survive under these circumstances or thank him for giving him a chance to live life on the other side? This question haunts him as they wander the city, though he eventually puts it out of his mind for the moment, thinking it would be too coincidental to find the werewolf there.

"Hey, no. Uh, it's alright. It's... really okay. I can probably give you something from the kitchen back at Telltale until we get to the Den. I have no idea how they'll treat you, so it's probably best to get something out of the way..." She waved over at him. "It might be rushed, but it's better than nothing."

Ilvette really didn't know the guy. Owed him no favors. But who was she to judge, when someone was clearly distressed? It was a common thing in Lutetia City to help your neighbor. "Have you had your... uh... first transformation yet? You know how to control it to some extent?"
