Description

Image
Oh, I'm supposed to be dead? Never was much of a details guy ..

Appearance: Jack's the typical blue-eyed blonde-haired media darling with a smile that attracts camera flashes as well as fangirls. At 6'2'' and 210 lbs of solid muscle he can swagger with the rest of 'em, but would much prefer to stand and sign autographs.

And then -- all of it changed.

After being burned, Jack cut his signature locks short. They were browner at the roots, anyways, and the change in appearance startled even himself. His eyes naturally remained the same hue, but they don't sparkle anymore these days. They're harder, colder, and much less trusting.

Ditching his polo shirt and surfboard look, Jack started dressing back to his roots. Yankee's cap. Hooded sweatshirts. Anything to make him fit in on the streets of New York -- which have suddenly become his new ( yet familiar ) home.

Personality: Always making jokes, always ready with something bright to say. The 'event' changed most of Jack's laid-back, easygoing demeanor. There's an edge of retaliation in the man now, a spark, even. Humor doesn't come as easily to him as it did back then.

Equipment/Abilities: Jack is an Ignitor. Simply put, Ignition is a form of elemental control. With a snap of his fingers, Jack can summon a flame to lengthen and manipulate -- or he could simply 'ignite' something, and send it sky high. The Ignitors of the past have been called just 'flashy battering rams' who would rather blow something to bits than do any actual investigation.

After being nearly drowned and left for dead, Jack has found his Ignition skills to be sapped. 'Waterlogged' he calls himself, and the decrease in ability worries him as foes close in around him. If there is a flame existing already, Jack can control it just fine -- but casting snaps is another matter.

Jack is starting to feel like all he has fuel for .. all he has left is one really great, big, final boom. And the reality of that haunts him.

"When we end this, it'll be on my terms."

History: Though a Brooklyn boy at heart, Jack found himself on the West Coast part of L.A's glitzy 'Infinity Five'. Things seemed fine, between the cars and promotional gigs -- but then one day, Jack was betrayed by his team and left to drown in the Pacific ocean.

No one expected him to survive -- but he did, by chance, thanks to some tuna fishermen off the coast. Jack staggered his way back to New York and tried to piece his life back together. Who had burned him? What had he done wrong?

∞ The Infinity Five, forever.

Note: The Jack described here is the Jack Calumet, superhero -- used in his own canon. There is another Jack Calumet an Officer in Liesha Kennicot/Fletcher Godeaux's canon.

The differences between the Jack's is that Jack stayed in New York, did not go to Los Angeles. After being burned, he remembered nothing about himself, instead of returning back to life with a vengeance. They're confusing. I play sort of a weird blend of both in the bar, depending on who's there. If you're really that interested, talk to me and I'll explain it better.

Bottom line: There are two canonical Jacks.

So begins...

Jack Calumet Coils of explosive energy ripped through the bar. It was a contained blast, and Jack had no trouble with his Extraction. The bulk of the light, sound, and heat was directed up and over - through the body of Jacqueline Gritter, spending itself quickly and in a flash.

What looked like a fat mushroom hit the floor.

Jacqueline Gritter's body was a hollow paper shell, torched easily. It melted away like the same magic that had brought it to life. Jack crouched there on his hands and knees, staring at the doppleganger. No. Noo ..

Dom had ducked behind the bar with his hands over his ears when Jack first cast the snap. The smoke had settled in the bar for the most part - but an alarm still shrieked somewhere. The silence was deafening.

Jack could not believe what he was seeing. He had been tricked. It wasn't her. She was somewhere else - snickering at him. Taking notes. And he had been stupid enough to fall for it.

He had been tricked into casting a snap -

- it wasn't over.

Jack Calumet staggered to his feet. He felt like a drunk man. Jacqueline had any number of clones - he'd never be able to know who the real one was. He groped for his hat, his coat .. he had cast a snap. Oh, lord, he had cast a snap ..

There was no better way to advertise to the SCD - 'Here I am! Come and stamp me out!'

Refusing to look Dom in the eye, Jack left just as the last traces of the paper clone withered away.

Jack Calumet descended on the bar with all the finesse and fury a man in his position could have. He didn't kick the door so much as thrust it open without touching it -- Jack was in a fine high temper, and there was more fire in his eyes than curled between his fists.

Dom looked up at the display, having been in the middle of wiping down last night's glasses. The gnarled bartender's expression was grim. He had a feeling he knew what this was about.

"How long did you know." Jack demanded -- without preamble, even before he was fully up to the counter. The former Ignitor slapped his palm on the bar, and in his rage one might have smelled wood burning.

Jack Calumet Dom shook his head. "None of that now." He grunted, stepping closer to the man. "Don't be shouting. Are you wise? How many times have I told you that they're listening?"

"I'm past caring. They've known where I was the entire time, Dom. The entire time." Jack slammed his fist again, and this time he left a scorch mark. His hands were curled, but there was a pink glow to his flesh. The former Ignitor was dangerously close to losing control.

"Old man -- you know more than what you're saying." Jack lifted his right hand, now, his thumb and forefinger pressed together so hard, the fingers were trembling. "And if you don't tell me -- I swear to Aramei, I'll light this place up, and burn it to the ground."

Jack Calumet The gnarled bartender was much too old, and much too experienced to be any sort of scared right now. "Boy, do you think you're the first one to threaten to kill me? Put that hand down. I know you, you talk big but you wouldn't do it. Not with innocents in the bar."

Dom nodded behind Jack, indicating the other patrons. The hand did not waver, not for a moment. Jack's eyes even seemed to harden.

"Then you underestimate me. I could cast a snap, burn you and this building to bits -- and leave everyone unharmed, unsinged. Think I've never done a difficult distraction before? Nah. Nah, that ain't me." Jack lifted his hand higher.

"This is the face of a man who's past caring, Dom. This is the face of a man who just .. wants .. ANSWERS."

Jack Calumet "Why was I burned?" Jack demanded loudly. "Why did they betray me? Why did they leave me dead in the Atlantic ocean, and why am I alive now? Who is the woman with the bright purple eyes? What does she want with me?"

Jack didn't seem to care that everyone was hearing him. He didn't seem to care that he was shouting.

"You've been a part of this from the start, haven't you? Hot damn, I knew you were more than just a bartender, Dom, but I swear .. if you had anything to do with the people who ruined my life .. "

"Put the hand down." Dom said in a weary voice.

"Tell me. Tell me what's going on."

"Put it DOWN I said."

"I'll burn you, I swear -- "

"Then do it."

Jack didn't move. He licked his lips, but did not blink. Over the course of the conversation, the former Ignitor had been getting steadily louder and louder -- but now, his voice was suddenly soft.

"Fine." He said, lowered his hand, and slumped onto a bar stool. Jack shrugged. "Beer, please."

And that was that.

Jack Calumet slipped into the bar like a man pursued. He shut the door with a snap, and made his way to the front counter in one bound, a Red Sox cap snugged low over his face.

"That .. " Dom said when he turned around, and recognized Jack instantly. " .. is the worst disguise I have ever seen."

Jack had cut his signature hair as close to his skull as he could stand it. Gone was his usual polo and khakis look, he was dressed like any kid from New York. He stared at Dom, and the grizzled bartender tried to ignore the fire in the man's eyes.

It was clear -- Jack Calumet was done running.

"Coming right up." When Locke made his order, Dom was only too quick to take the opportunity to step away from a man burned.

Jack Calumet It was too dangerous for Dom and Jack to be seen talking. Jack knew what the man would say, though, already. It would be a combination of berating, insulting, and prickly questions.

No one knew he was still alive. Everyone thought he was dead in a tragic accident. They were all idiots. Jack, the former Ignitor, sat by himself at the bar with Dom keeping a nervous eye on him.

"Will that be all?" The bartender asked Locke.

Jack Calumet "Name's Johnny." Jack swung his head up and around, grinning suddenly. The Boston accent was well-set; apparently, he had been practicing. "Ducking landlords in the last place they'll ever look, so you'll forgive me if -- " Jack glanced over his shoulder at the door, " -- If I'm a bit jumpy."

He glanced back to Dom, who did not make eye contact, but served up the order. Jack reached out, took a grateful sip.

"Chin up, old man." 'Johnny' grinned.

Jack Calumet looked up slowly, lifting the brim of his hat. His face was still, stoic, seemed to be chiseled out of stone -- until he recognized the figure staring down at him.

"Sarah." Jack smiled. He sat up, slid his feet off the table and beckoned that she join him there. "Sit down. We need to have a talk."
