"Wait, I told you that you have to... Uh,"

Quinn's shoulders fell, and the mechanic sighed. Perhaps being sued wasn't the worst thing that could happen, then. They stopped trying to contest.

"If something happens, with your mask, come back. So I can fix it. Just... come back. There's uh, a tracking chip in your mask, so..."

They nodded the mercenary off.

Quinn had been resting, then, at the counter of the shop. They had their head down, with their arms as pillows. The shopkeep had figured that they might as well have rested then, if they were going to have a visitor over that night. The shop hadn't gotten many customers, anyway. One since Sen had left, and it'd been only a shelf-browser.

And when Sen knocked on the door, Quinn looked up. They raised from the chair, and groggily made their way to the front. It wasn't with much gusto that the mechanic had opened the door, then.

"It's late," Quinn said, in a half-yawn. "You've-"

It was then that they noticed their posture, and with the dim-light of the shop and the blue light of the moon, Sen's oddly discolored arm. "What's...? What'd you do?"

And when the naturally panicked shopkeep had realized what Sen was bending around, they'd lept for the mercenary's other shoulder, to pull them inside the shop, and shut the door.

"I told you to come back if something was wrong with the mask. I'm not, uh, licensed for anything, living. God, just, don't go into, uh, shock, alright?"

"Not on my bed. Stop. Stop, alright?!" Quinn practically yelled.

They reached out to catch Sen by the collar, and turn them around, a gesture that might've been familiar to the young mercenary. The look on the mechanic's face was angry. A contrast.

And, then, when Quinn realized it, they shook it off just as easily as it'd come.

"I have a first aid kit. I, uh, know how to work it, okay? So, I'll cut the arm of your shirt off, and we can bandage it. No uh, ambulances, not unless you start dying. Or going into shock. Okay?"

Quinn shook their head.

"No, uh, it isn't. I'll uh... You can have some of the money back, to buy a new jacket. You don't need to wear that. It's..."

The mechanic froze. Matter at hand. They moved from Sen, to behind the counter. And, gods, they'd wished they'd organized things better. A few seconds of shifting, though, and they'd come back with a first aid kit and the rolling chair from behind the desk.

"Sit."

Then they looked at the wound.

Then, they looked almost helpless.

"Are you sure that you don't want to go to the hospital...? That, uh... That's deep. It looks like it needs stitches, Sen. Uh. Lots."

"Yeah, yeah, holdon, just... don't go into shock, okay?"

Quinn had grabbed a rag from the kit, and ran into the counter just the same to grab a bottle of hydrogen peroxide. They shook it in their hand, and approached Sen with it.

"It's going to sting, just uh, a little bit. Less than alcohol would, but I don't drink, so, you're out of luck." Quinn said, perhaps a little calmer than expected. They doused the rag with it, and brought it to Sen's arm.

"Remind me uh, what diner you went to, so I can never go there." Quinn said, grimacing at what blood the rag did absorb. They pressed down on the wound with a hand, while the other reached for bandages.

And while they wrapped, they talked.

"So, am I entitled to knowing what you do now...? Or is that still off-limits...? You could've, uh, knocked on someone elses' door. Someone with medical training? I would be responsible if you died, so..."

"You were under supervision." Quinn said softly, only momentarily looking up to Sen. "So don't die, alright? You can, uh, use the shower later, after your wound is a little better. I'll just..."

The mechanic pursed their lips.

"Buy new sheets."

Quinn couldn't help but think that the mercenary had been a hell of a hassle, so far. They'd have to watch them all night. There was a moment where they stared at the kit, before reaching in and handing a bottle of pills to Sen.

"Are these small enough for, uh... Your uh... tube...?"

Quinn took one or two out of the mercenary's hand, and slipped the pills into their pocket. With a hesitant sigh, they turned to the side.

"You'll take the bed. I need to keep an eye on you." the mechanic said. "And I plan on sleeping in my room tonight, too."

Just in a less comfortable place.

But, Quinn didn't have their arm sliced open. They didn't have their mouth... messed up. They weren't homeless. It was, well, the least they could do.

"You uh, should stop suggesting I don't do nice things, and just say thanks, because I might reconsider it." Quinn said. They looked back to Sen when they'd started talking again, and gestured for them to stand up. The mechanic offered help, if need be.

"You're also not a freeloader. I'm... still expecting the other thousand. And, it's still on my head if you, uh, die, so..."

"No, not at all. Not really." Quinn said, grabbing the money as the two of them had walked by the counter. They'd stuffed the wad of money into their jacket, and continued toward the stairs.

"Particularly uh, distraught, actually."

And once they'd gotten into the bedroom, they'd helped Sen onto the bed, if they needed it. On the bed itself was a bundle of blankets, one of which Quinn pulled for themself.

"How's your arm? Is it, uh, bleeding anymore? Not excessively, right? You don't feel like you're going to pass out?"

Quinn watched the mercenary splay out onto their bed. It was a bit too late to change their mind. Their customer had already claimed their territory. It was no use asking, Quinn thought, but that probably hadn't come to Sen's mind.

"U-uh... No, I'd... never done that before...?" the mechanic replied, and lowered themselves to the floor. They kicked their shoes off just as well, and slid their gloves off just the same. A mechanical glint shone under the blanket that they held.

"Yeah, I'm sure. You, uh, deserve it, after all that, I guess. Never had a client downpay and then full-pay in two days, either, so, uh..."

'Ginger' shrugged.

"Yeah, well... Uh, you deserve something, after, your arm, too. I don't think anyone needs a cut like that."

Quinn pursed their lips, and focused their attention on Sen, not quite understanding why they were detailing their morbid stories to the poor mechanic, who shuddered at the thought. Bamboo up their fingernails?

Or, were they just trying to have conversation?

"You're uh, not exactly normal, either, so..." Quinn furrowed their brow. "I'm not a kid, either. I'm probably older than you, by the looks of it."

Quinn didn't leave it at that, though. Their brow furrowed instantly and they sunk into the blanket, wrought with dejection. They neglected to let the mercenary sleep after such a comment, even if their mown eyelids were weighing down with exhaustion.

"What's that supposed to mean? Physically?"

The corners of the mechanic's mouth fell downwards.

Quinn let a heavy breath escape from their nose.

"Just because you've had bamboo shoved through your fingernails and you're homeless doesn't set you high and mighty and give you more everlasting wisdom than... everyone else." Quinn said, to the resting Sen. "It doesn't mean other people haven't been through things."

The mechanic stood up, and wrapped the blanket around themself.

"It looks like you're doing just fine, so just scream or holler or throw yourself off my bed if something goes wrong. I'll, uh... Be on the couch."

With it, the ginger-haired shopkeep quietly descended the stairs, and sleepily took to the couch at the bottom as Sen had took to the bed upstairs.

Quinn had long since fallen asleep, with the one blanket they'd taken from Sen. They shivered in the new cold, brought in with the stranger's appearence. Their eyes had threatened to open then, but it was only when the padding of the stranger's shoes had rung past their ears that they did reluctantly open their eyes.

And they'd seen something out of a nightmare, staring back at them. Quinn's heart fluttered, at first, and at second, rational thought, thought that the stranger might've been a blurry-eyed illusion of the night. They had those often. But when it didn't go away with two blinks, the ginger-haired shop-owner threw the blanket over themself and tripped to the floor, to find a tool they'd haphazardly left for someone to trip on.

"Uh, who are you?" Quinn asked. "Store hours are closed. I... Probably left the door unlocked, but the sign - store hours are closed, so..."

Quinn's heart raced. More than it raced when the fellow with the gun came into their shop. Their eyes widened with terror, and they scanned the face of their assailant. The mechanic's mouth opened to speak, but they could barely form words to speak.

"U-uh..."

There was a lapse of silence.

"G-guns...? I-if it's g-guns, you can have them, j-just take the keys on my belt, a-and there's guns in the l-lockbox, okay?"

Both a mechanical grip and an organic one latched onto the man's hand.

"Whatever you want. Take... just take whatever you want."

Quinn dropped to the floor, their elbows catching their weight. Their neck had been strained from being shaken, and it'd taken a second to regain their vision. The poor mechanic's heart thudded in their chest that it felt ready to burst, and they hadn't anything to say but panicked gasps for air.

But when their hands met the cool surface of the ground, they'd grabbed for something. Anything they'd left on the floor. And when they'd stuffed their mechanical hand under the couch, when Kimo's head had looked up toward the ceiling, they'd scavenged a screwdriver.

And aimed it directly for the man's knee.

Quinn had rolled over on their side, grasping their head with both of their hands, and shuddering in pain. The mechanic gritted their teeth and squeezed their eyes shut, trying to block out the rolling waves of dull aches that'd come after the stranger had floored them.

The stranger, who made a sudden and strange disappearence. Quinn's eyes flickered open, to find Sen, and the limp body of the stranger beforehand. Almost out of instinct, the mechanic grabbed the mercenary with their false hand and tried to pull themself up. To run away.

But when the man hadn't moved, Quinn stopped, and shut their eyes again. They nodded, slowly, in spite of the pain. It seemed to be a trait that both of the two shared, then.

"...U-uh, just hit my head." The mechanic said. "Second break-in, in, two days."

Quinn stumbled to the couch, and braced the back of their head with both of their hands again. The mechanic leaned forward into their knees.

"You're, uh..." Quinn started, "Leaving tomorrow, aren't you? S-so... That's not..."

Sen's statement wasn't very reassuring. Their second was a little alarming. The mechanic's eyes flickered open, to look to the two.

"...What? You brought him here...?"

"No, wait. Uh, what're you gonna do...? It's... Going to be on tape, anyway, and..."

Quinn lifted themself off of the chair, and stumbled toward Sen. They closed one eye in pain, and held a hand to the back of their head.

"Self-defence, uh, doesn't count, when the person is unconscious, so put that away. We can just call the police."
