Quinn was at their desk, in their quaint little shop, at the corner of one of the shadier districts in Eden City.

Their shelves were lined with trinkets and tools. Little gizmos that no one really needed or sought, but found their way into Quinn's workshop by chance or by thought. Trash and treasure alike, they had worked their fair share. Behind glass cabinets laid pricier mechanisms. Guns, augmentations, the like.

But the one person in the workshop - the owner - who sat under dim light with their face in their palm and their eyes on the ceiling, didn't seem to care. They just swiveled behind the counter, with nothing to do but stare at that cost-saving environmentally-friendly 53-watt bulb, and hope someone rang in through their front door.

"Oh," Quinn started, quietly. They looked up, over their nose, at the person who waited at the door. It wasn't long before they'd gotten up and bolted from the seat to meet the man at the door, red curls bouncing behind them.

They unlocked it, and nodded him in. "Cold out? T'uh... Really need something? What'ya need, stranger?"

The ginger-haired shop owner pursed their lips.

"I'm uh, gonna start charging a dime to use the restrooms, if that's what you're after."

Quinn stumbled, but caught their footing. They stepped in front of the larger man, cutting them off, and sidled to the counter rather quickly.

"T-thanks. I can help. This is my shop. What are you looking for? Custom for something? I can make weapons, if you have uh, a permit, for shooting them." they said, placing themself directly infront of the man.

"I have more stuff in the back, locked up. Just need, uh, credentials." they said. "Or if you're not looking for that kind of stuff, you just looked like..."

The shop-owner's eyes widened, if only for a second, and they moved out of the man's way.

"I s-sell soap too."

"Oh."

Quinn looked down, to the gun. They slowly raised their hands, and frantically looked between the metallic death machine and the man's face.

"It's, uh..." they started, and gestured to the keyring that took it's place on their beltloop. "H'uh... Uh... I t-think I'm having a - uh... p-panic attack."

They placed their hands on their knees, and went to sit on the floor. Shaky hands went to hand the keyring over to the man. The superlative amount of toys and colors to each key made it look like a kid's plaything. Quinn looked up, only momentarily, to gesture at the gun.

"C-could y-you put that away?"

Quinn lowered their head when the man raised the gun.

Then they raised it, when all the commotion was over. Wide eyed with terror, Quinn scrambled to their feet, and placed a hand on their heart. The ginger-haired shop owner looked just about ready to run away from their own premises.

"Oh, there's, he's not, dead? Is he? Should I call the police? Did you put a hole in? I sleep up there, I uh, rent this place out. That wasn't an actual, uh, gun, was it?" they asked. Their hand moved from their heart to their head, and they felt weak in the knees.

"I, uh, never moved a body, before. Oh, god. I don't even believe in god. You're not going to rob me too, are you?"

"Okay," Quinn said. "Okay."

"Lock the door, when you come back? I can fix, er, whatever. Uh... and fifty bucks sounds fine. Car? Uh... Computer? Your uh, gun sounds like it's working perfectly fine."

With a shaky breath out, they clipped the keyring into their beltloop again, before going to sit behind the counter. Only their shoulders and head peeked above the surface, which was riddled with dents and pencil marks.

"Oh," they started, as if coming to a revelation, "Your face?"

"I uh, need to get in there, first. And take measurements. Is it, uh, necessary or aesthetic? Not that you'd uh, do that, as a fashion statement, if it were necessary. Not that it looks bad." they said.

Quinn wasted no time approaching the customer. The shop owner's excitement was hidden by a very studious glance. They'd gone to examine the mask on the stranger's face, before halting themselves.

"Uh, may I? I'm, not going to remove it, just - need to see. And - if you could take it off, for a moment - if you can. Unless you wanted to do a live repair...?"

Quinn stepped away, dejected.

"I can. If you want me to fix your mask, I need to see it. And, uh... Wet towel...?" Their brow furrowed.

They reached for the keys on their belt. Each key had a color on it, from pink to black. The workshop key - whose door was just behind the counter - was red. Quinn had made for it without warning, and stopped at the door.

"T'uh, the bathrooms are in the workshop. The other stuff is too, so..."

They gestured for the stranger to come with.

And whether they did or not, Quinn went into the back. It looked like a garage, past the 'ladies' and 'mens' restroom doors, and the spiral staircase that led to god knows where. Tools laid hazardously about the floor, and lockboxes lined the walls, with padlocks and paranoid chains surrounding them. A working platform was in the middle, well-lit, and set with a tiny refridgerator. There was a project in place, but it wasn't quite discernable what it was, yet.

"Okay..." Quinn started. They'd taken the mask in glove, and directed Sen to a sofa in the corner with their eyes. "I'll uh, just need it for a second. You should really have a replacement, for stuff like this..."

They'd taken Sen's appearence into account, if only for a second. The form of their face was certainly wrong, but Quinn couldn't see why with a towel over their face. They moved to the platform with the mask, ever carefully, and sat down at the working table.

And then they talked, while they tinkered.

"I actually work, yeah. I have credentials. They're, uh, in my bedroom, though, I don't have enough room for them, in the shop. I'm licensed, so," they stopped, for a moment. "Do you want me to clean this?"

Then they paused.

"Uh,"

"Forget I asked. You do have melted equipment in here. And, uh, you'd probably be better off using a power source in your mask that isn't ... batteries. I carry fuel cells and Nerium here. It's uh... Like fuel, except it burns long and cold, so it won't overheat."

They looked up, from their workplace.

"It's more than fifty bucks."

"And, uh, you're going to need a new humidifier. And you're going to need the old one scraped out. And the wiring is going to need to be replaced. You're going to need to get a Nerium refill every, uh, two years or so, to keep everything running."

Quinn stopped for a moment.

"The battery change is most of the cost, but once you get it in, the fuel changes are... pretty cheap."

They grinned.

"It's uh... Going to be two grand. But, fifty dollars off, right?"

Quinn brought the mask back. They descended the platform, and carefully offered it to Sen, holding it underneath a towel.

"Can't do the repair now, unless it's an emergency. I'm going to need a little money down. And your name. And... a phone number. And uh, a home address, if possible. And if you want discounts, you could give me your e-mail address, too."

The shopkeep's smile was persistent.

"Mine's uh, Quinn, but... It's on the sign, so."

Quinn didn't contest to being turned around, though they'd jerked when Sen had grabbed them.

When the mercenary spoke again, they looked back, and gave a meek nod. "Uh, alright. Money, repair, then the rest of the money. I can do it... In a few days time. One or two."

There was a small silence, before Quinn spoke again.

"The thousand?" they said, and put out a hand. There was a twinge of guilt, there, and it showed on the shopkeep's face. For taking such a grand amount of money from such an unfortunate person. Homeless.

"Uh," Quinn said, "Y-yeah. Okay."

The whites of Quinn's eyes got a little bit whiter.

"Okay, Sen. Just uh, come back. Alright?"

They went to hold the workshop door open for the mercenary, and stuffed the wad of cash into their jacket. They were tired. They had a gun pointed at them. But they had a customer. And, at that, a big break of one.

"Tomorrow. Come back tomorrow."

Quinn had only noted Sen's arrival by a small panel, fixated on the side of the platform of which they'd worked. They'd been drilling away, and anyone who'd approached their shop would hear it. Once they'd gotten a glimpse of the mask-toting mercenary that'd been waiting at their door, though, the shop owner hadn't exactly hesitated to stop what they were doing.

They catapulted to the store front, and let Sen in, still wearing a mask of their own. It muffled Quinn's speech, though only by a little.

"Uh, I've got, uh." they started, "Come in. You can -"

Quinn started toward the workshop, where they ushered Sen as well.

"...Ready for the repair. I have, uh, there's a wet towel, in the, uh, ladies restroom. An, actual towel, so... I was thinking that I might, because you're homeless, put a tracking chip in? Or... install the new, uh, humidifier now. And, the new battery pack later,"

The shopkeep took a few steps away from Sen.

"...so, you don't, run off, or something. Not that you will, but, the Nerium pack is expensive."

"Alright. I uh, yeah. Got it. I should be the only one able to access the chip, anyway, so..."

When Sen came out, it was like the last time. Quinn nodded them to the couch, and took the mask to their workspace.

"Uh, grab the glasses on the bench next to you, or don't look up here. You could hurt your eyes." they said, and gave a tap of the welding mask they'd been wearing.

It was a relatively short procedure. Two hours at the least. Two hours and thirty minutes at the most. Quinn kept their eyes on their work the entire time. Given that their guest wasn't much able to speak, and sparks were afly, Sen didn't have much of a choice but to leave the shopkeep alone.

--

When Quinn was done, they hoisted the mask above their head and cupped Sen's mask in a towel. Ceremoniously, as if they were bestowing a gift among a savant, they descended the platform with an enormous grin on their face, and looked to the mercenary.

"It... looks good." Quinn said, with wide eyes. "It shouldn't overheat, like I said, because of the cold fuel. And uh, since you agreed, it has a tracking chip in it, but I'll deactivate it when I get the rest of the payment."

For a moment, the curly-haired shop owner went silent, before both of their brows raised and they bounced on both of their toes with excitement.

"Put it on."

Quinn grinned.

"Yeah? Awesome. Well, awesome." the tinkerer said, beaming with pride. "So, uh... With life support, systems, or augmentations, normally I'd just... give you my phone number. But, you don't have a phone, because you're homeless."

The smile faded a little, with an accompanied wince.

"Uh... So, you wouldn't mind staying here, would you? Or, I could follow you around somewhere. Or I could take you somewhere. If there's somewhere you need to go. But, uh, you'll have to sign a release form, if you want to head off without any supervision. Because, assumed risk." They nodded. "You know."

"I mean..."

Quinn shook their head.

"I don't think anything will go wrong, I just have to, uh, inform you of the risks. The wiring is great, and uh, like you said, the breathing is great. And, you can go anywhere... if you bring me with you." They pulled their lips into a thin line, and lowered their glance to the floor. "...unless you sign the release form, relieving me of all uh, responsibilities."

They looked to the floor, then up to Sen. "It's uh, a life support system, Sen. And it's just a day. Just to make sure nothing breaks. And everything's fine."

Quinn shrugged.

"You could also stay here."

"Uh... no. I work there - er, here." Quinn said, thumbing to the workshop. They bit their lip, and glanced toward the set of spiral stairs. The one that led up to their bedroom.

"There's a... bed, upstairs. I uh, guess you could have it for the night. I need to work through it, anyway. It could be an interesting case study. As long as you don't touch my computer, or any of my things..."

A furrowed brow and a slanted mouth said that Quinn hadn't jumped on board with the idea, but they'd gone to usher Sen upstairs all the same.

"You're uh, homeless, right? You like beds?"

"I was uh, going to ask you if you wanted to take a shower first, but last time I mentioned anything about... uh, hygiene, I almost got shot, so..." Quinn stepped back from Sen as the mercenary stepped toward them. They glanced toward the emergency chemical contamination shower. It wasn't really more than a cut-out rectangle in the corner of the room with a curtain and protocol lead lining, but the storage room upstairs wasn't really supposed to be a bedroom, either.

Quinn stepped back, onto the steps, and took to the upper floor. It was, well, a renovated storage room. Relatively small, but it looked as if it held the being of a college student. The walls were run with taped wires, an obvious fire hazard if there were one. It'd made way for a microwave as well, but as far as space went, that's where it's limits were pushed.

"You can sleep here." Quinn said, gesturing to the bed. They looked back to Sen, with pursed, unhappy lips.

"You, uh, also might want to stop mentioning stuff people don't normally do, that I do, if you still want me to do them. It makes me reconsider doing those things."

"That's uh, a start." Quinn said, with a nod.

"How do you expect to come up with the other thousand, exactly? You're not uh, part of... Anything illegal, are you? Like uh... drugs?" they asked, moving across the room to their chair. They'd probably be the one sleeping on the couch that night, it seemed, but they still had work to do.

"Or, it doesn't matter. I shouldn't ask, probably, or I'm probably not allowed to." they said, giving a brief shake of their head. "I mean, with how you are, and all."
