a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by CelticCat

Description

Normal Appearance:
Image

Demonic Form:
Image

Name: Ula (Uh-lah) Siofra (Seeo-frah)
Age: Appears in her early twenties (Countless centuries in reality)
Gender: Female
Basic Description: A descendant of the Celtic "Asrais" line of fairies, Ula is lithe and tall with an extraordinary air of grace and beauty hanging about her. She is also found to be dripping constantly, her clothes and hair always soaked full of water. It's easy to tell where she's been, as her foot prints leave small puddles. Her toes are slightly webbed, but she hides this when in her humanesque form.

Major Abilities:
Water Mastery: Her kind are rumored to be simply sentient water, and as such, any body of water that is touched is under her command when she is in a "pure form".

Minor Abilities:
Attract: Male Humans (and to a lesser extent female humans and humanoids) find themselves with an insatiable urge to capture or touch the Asrai. However, either would be fatal to the Asrai herself. It is an innate "ability", though acting as more of a curse, and is in no way under her control.
Chill: Another innate ability is that her touch can permanently chill the skin of humans so it never feels heat again. Too much exposure to this ability may cause death, as any exposure to extreme cold.
Personality
Personality: Understandably timid towards people she doesn't know, very shy and quiet. She tends to be compassionate and protective of those she does know well, but those are few and far between.
Warnings: Direct sunlight or being captured cause her to die and her body to dissolve into a pool of water.

History
She lived most of her youth with her sisters, hidden in a grove deep within Ireland. However, as humans began to become curious about them and encroach on their land, they fled in all different directions. She's had no contact with another Asrais for more than a century, though she may have found haven...

So begins...

Ula simply nodded to his questions. "I am Ula Siofra, daughter of the moon. My sisters and I laid still and dormant until our mother called us to life and we called back. I am nature, yes. I may have become more than that, but I never parted from it, if that makes sense..." She slowly began to manipulate the water, pulling it up in arches and bubbles. "We've been tainted, though, all of us. I don't remember how it happened, but something about humans cursed us. That's why you don't see me when you just look."

Ula crossed her legs and tilted her head, watching him slowly. "I don't know how much there is to tell, a lot of my history is lost to time. I am one of the oldest of my sisters and I am, therefore, the most dependent on water for my strength and regeneration. The others survive on the light of the moon alone, but it doesn't sustain me. Nor does it feed my abilities, magic as humans call it." Her eyes darkened slightly. "But my sisters are gone now...scattered. I've only found one of the youngest and she barely handles herself. Too much curiosity and not enough tact. The rest are probably dead, I assume." She let the sentence hang before glancing at him. "What about you? You said you used to think you are human...What do you think you are now, then, who are your family?"

Ula frowned slightly and tilted her head, taking in the information as if confused. "If it helps you...You feel like Mother. There is a strength and a warmth in you that is familiar. It's as if I know your kind, but simply can't recall it." She shook her head slightly, as if thinking something unpleasant, spraying little drops of water. "I, too, lose memories, but not all at once. They pour into my head and drip off like a heavy rain. A sister once said that mother takes back some memories for a better purpose, but I don't think we were ever meant to remember all our lives...Feelings, though. That, I understand. I once stood in the ocean, one where I thought I'd never been, and a small ship went by to fish and the sight of the fisherman terrified me. I'd never been so scared, though I had no memory to cause me to..." She fell silent for a few moments. "Sometimes it's best not to know..."

Ula watched him, slowly emerging from the bathtub, her footsteps leaving little puddles as she approached, standing to watch him in his search. "You have a similar essence. We Asrais can feel each other by our essence, something like the human concept of an aura, I've found. In the water, it's the only way to distinguish each other. However, we are not restricted to ourselves...I've also felt Mother's essence. She is the goddess of the moon...She is graceful and powerful, her aura is almost overpowering in large doses. You exhibited that same feeling last night when you called the trees to defend us...You are not...tender or familial as she is. But there are marked resemblances in the way you feel to me." She found it difficult to explain herself. She'd spent a long time among a human faction that protected her, but to explain her species' vernacular to a stranger was strange.

Ula waited for a few moments, simply watching him before she responded. "The water is enough...I'm afraid any food you might give me would be ruined at my touch. The only interest I've had in any sort of...ingested product is merely for entertainment purposes." She blushed slightly at the memory, pushing it away, embarrassed at her childishness. "But...you essence. It's like...lighting. It is sharp and wild. It sizzles in the air, but is gone the moment I look further. I can sense the power in your wake, the destruction you could cause...Yet it is a restrained thing, tied in ribbons of, of...bits like confusion and things I do not recognize. I do not know that I can explain further. You essence is very unlike those of my sisters and of humans. Only my mother compares in the slightest."

Ula locked eyes with him, studying him deeply for a long moment before moving to reply. "You do not scare me," she replied carefully and slowly, moving to a better position to speak to him. "You are contained, trapped, maybe, and I do not think you would harm me given the chance. Not as you are. Your essence is strange, new, and there is only one nature I fear." She slowly moved toward the window, her back to him. "It is in you...A greed...A desire for what you will never possess, will never control. I fear it...but I do not fear you." She pushed back her hair and slowly turned back to him. "Is that answer...satisfactory?"

Ula frowned as she watched him, slowly moving back to the bathtub. "I'm...sorry, if I've upset you. I only state what I feel...I didn't think that you would not know yourself. I've been...alone a very long time. It's become difficult to understand others and the proper way to speak to them." She sunk into the bathtub, her lower body dissipating. "If my words bother you...Understand that I could be mistaken in my description. Or my comprehension is too limited by species barriers to truly understand you. Besides, I've known people who are not their essence." She sighed softly, closing her eyes. "Thank you again, for allowing me here, but the sun has set and I shall take my leave..."

The water near the edge of the pool ebbed softly, a small bulge of water raising from the surface. The Asrais looked over the visitor curiously, almost terrified to attempt an approach. However, he'd cleared out the monsters and that was something she was immensely grateful for. Half the time she'd spent in this place was simply running or hiding in a desperate attempt to stay alive. Words of gratitude were surely more than appropriate in the circumstances.

The water started falling away as she pulled herself out slowly, but surely. She returned to her physical form, hopefully that her appearance would not drive him to capture her, as tired as he appeared. She took a few tentative steps toward him, tilting her head slowly to the side. However she appeared to him, she looked soaked to the bone and left small puddles as she slowly and carefully tread towards him.

"Hello."

Duke stood up abruptly and raised his glaive, ready to drive it into the next thing he saw. He was mad from fatigue and hunger and cold. Adrenaline coursed through his veins like water through a stream.

But he stopped. He froze. His icy eyes widened, he took in a choked breath. The glaive dropped to the ground with a clatter.

"... Taylor?" he rasped. The woman he thought he wouldn't see again. He'd accepted her death. He'd accepted his freedom and his loss.

But how could he do either when that woman stood before him, with all her long, brown hair out and about, gently laying over her shoulders, and her face marred with scars that he'd so lovingly taken to as a sign of her trials and her strength? What about those gentle eyes that accepted him through his cold demeanor and grumpy mannerisms?

Who saw through him?

"Tay... Taylor?"

Ula frowned, her features taking on an almost sorrowful quality. She didn't dare to remove her line of sight from his eyes as she began to tremble slightly with fear. Had she found a full-blooded human male in this place? Perhaps she'd made a terrible mistake, maybe even a fatal one...

"I'm sorry," she replied softly, a long sigh accompanying her voice. "I just wanted to thank you for what you've done, you saved me." She took a single step backwards. A test.

She'd lived a long time and she wasn't incapable to removing herself from difficult situations, but she wanted to gauge this carefully first. Just a touch could harm him...Just a grasp would murder her.

Duke's hand, outstretched, closed into a fist, and his expression became the same cold and hardened scowl it had always been. He drew away from her toward the fire, and reached for his glaive. He retired it to the case on his back, then sat, head in his hands.

"You're not her," he said, shaking his head. "Who are you, then?"

Ula let out a shaky breath, followed by a few more calming ones as she closed her eyes. The test had been passed.

"No. My sisters called me Ula..." she replied quietly. She leaned down to sit on her legs, her eyes not leaving his for even a moment. She began to comb a hand through her hair as it sparkled almost blonde at moments. Now that her glamour had been detected, the effects would slowly begin to dissolve away. "I'm sorry to disturb you. It's just been so long that I've seen...anyone, really."

The large man peered over his hands over at the young woman, eyes barely visible beneath his greasy, dirty blonde hair. He stared at her for a long moment before speaking, changing his gaze to the dying fire. "Don't worry about it," he said, gaze softening so slightly that it was barely detectable. "I've been the same."

He laid on his side, propping his head up with one hand. "Duke," he groaned. "What are you? Why are you changing up?"

Ula let a small smile dance across her lips, her shoulders relaxing slightly as she continued to stroke her hair into flowing whitish blonde tresses. "That is...somewhat hard to explain. The humans used to call us Asrai, but my sisters and I are many things. We are rivers, lakes, streams. We have some sort of curse, though. That's why you couldn't see me as I am when you first looked and why should never touch me or capture me."

Ula finally let her eyes fall to her lap, her skin taking on a sickly green tinge. "Not that I believe you would try, but I've found it best to always offer a warning."

Duke's eyes twitched up to meet Ula's for a brief moment, then lowered back to the flickering, cracking flames. They dimly reflected in his dark gaze.

"Cursed," he mumbled. His free hand reached up towards his neck, below his shirt, to tug at a thin black collar there. He narrowed his eyes, and a frown drew across his face, deeper than before. "I suppose I should thank you."

Ula looked around herself carefully, not used to the quiet that now seemed to creep in around them. "Thanks are not necessary, after all, I came to express my gratitude to you. These waters have been like a prison to me. I dared not leave for fear of being torn apart by those...beasts."

Ula fastened her eyes back to him, now deep and dark blue like the depths of the ocean. "I can...grant you a favor. Perhaps only a small one, as my abilities have faded over a long life...but ask of me and I can try."

Duke eyed Ula suspiciously.

He pushed himself up from the ground, leaned his chin on his hands, and narrowed his eyes.

"What kind of favor?" he asked. "Can you break spells? Curses?"

Ula pursed her brow thoughtfully, the corners of her mouth twitching down a little. "I can't give you a certain answer on that. The nature of the curse, it's purpose, and the strength would all affect how well I could dispel it."

She tugged lightly at her hair as she continued to comb it. "I can't break my own curse. Nor can I rend extremely powerful curses or spells without damaging the affected person or object..."

Without a word, Duke undid the first few buttons to his shirt, then moved it away from his neck. Laying there, dark against his skin, was a collar. A flat, black line that stuck tightly to his flesh.

"Applied properly, this spell takes death to break," he told her. "But this one was made hastily. Clumsily. In a panic."

Ula crouched down, pulling her hand from her hair to crawl toward Duke slowly, her eyes fixated on the band. She studied if carefully, her eyebrows furrowing slightly in concentration. Her eyes began to glow with an inner light as she focused on the magical energy. "It's...strong. Though if it's unfocused as you say, I may be successful." She let out a soft breath, visible as if it was a terribly cold night. The mist slowly made its way to his neck. The magic felt foreign to her, but as her own brushed across it, she felt the nature of it, similar to many spells she did know.

Ula closed her eyes and the mist dissipated. "If this is your request, I will try. However, if I am unsuccessful the consequences may prove dangerous. Is this what you wish?"
