The Multiverse

Setting

Between two and six trainers must be defeated before Jennifer can be confronted, with the entire Gym's design resembling a giant parking lot. The puzzle revolves around moving cars in order to open a path to the leader's platform, with adequate spaces provided for her apprentices to cut loose on a challenger. Speakers from the ceiling blare an industrial techno loop with lots of metal-on-metal sounds to maximize irritation on the challenger's part.

As Cloyster rolled to a stop on the ground, Jennifer was breathless. "Hah. Hah. Good race. I think you need to make a few tune-ups and come back again sometime." She tipped her cap and waved at Adam.

"This isn't over," Adam said, nodding to the Cloyster. "Get up. Everyone else fought until they couldn't go on, you can do the same." The ball wobbled for a moment, then rolled until it was upright and opened. The figure inside looked weak, but grinning madly as it had when it first came out. "Now he's going to come in with a special attack, try to finish you off. You know what to do when what happens happens."

Jennifer Harsdorff started and shifted her footing. "Heads up, Lucario! This isn't over!"

Jennifer Harsdorff frowned and simply recalled Lucario to replace it with Scizor. If it had been confused, it wasn't anymore.

"Wait for it," Adam said sternly.

Jennifer smirked and decided to switch it up. "Use U-turn!"

"Protect!" Adam said with a frown. That meant the Lucario was coming back out.

Jennifer Harsdorff watched as the Scizor drifted lazily to the side, then tried to attack from behind. Once again, it failed, so the Scizor stayed out. Now she had to worry about double-protect. "Finish it with Bullet Punch!"

Clamp on it while close. Of course this was still a risky move, it would mean taking the bullet punch on an already beat down creature. It would pretty much end the fight if the clamp didn't get a hold of the Scizor. And bullet punch was fast, so it probably wouldn't.

Again, Scizor rocketed forward, leading with its mighty pincer. Cloyster tried to clamp its shell on the offending appendage, and there was a surprising finish to the whole exchange. Adam's trust in Hydrostone meant that the timing was actually spot-on, catching it just behind the pincer and ruining the energy in the lead strike. But Scizor used its built-up momentum to lash out with its other arm in a powerful hook shot to deliver the intended blow.

The Cloyster transitioned into Razor Shell, rolling for the Scizor with the sharp jabbing points of its shell. But this meant going for the fist. It was going to hurt, but the Cloyster would go down.

Scizor instinctively held up its free arm to defend itself as it didn't so much get razor-shelled as it did get rolled over thanks to the previous Clamp attack. Still, Scizor was able to punch its way out of the clinch. Hydrostone was down for the count, and NOW the match was over as indicated by a steam whistle.

"Like I said, challenger. Pokemon are friends, not soldiers. A friend of mine once told me that the love you give your Pokemon is an investment that they will repay with interest," Jennifer lamented with hard eyes. "When you come back, I want to see that you've made those necessary changes, okay?"

The ball cast out to catch the Cloyster, then returned to his hand. "My pokemon are my friends. We're a team. You just don't push yours hard enough. If I had your attitude they would have gone down in two minutes." He turned away, letting his coat flutter behind him slightly. "I'll be back in a week, after I've hit up the next nearest gym and my pokemon have recovered."

Adam approached the gym once more, this time with a slightly lighter load than last time. He had no potions on his belt and instead of six pokeballs he had only one. He looked tired and gaunt with dark bags under his eyes and his normally cocky walk was a more hunched gait, tilted forward to try and push himself in that direction. Until he came to the puzzle.

"Do you remember me?"

Jennifer Harsdorff sighed as she had to shut down the gym for the night. Police were complaining about the noise. As much as it gave her the home-field advantage, she couldn't have the League hearing from the other authorities. "Yeah, I know you. I'm just shutting down for the night...hang on while I come to you." Par for the course for a puzzle Gym was a quick way from the Leader platform to the entrance, and she made use of that to land in front of Adam. "What's got you bummed out, challenger?"

He exhaled, tilting his head down. A long long day. First that bird girl, now this. "I need to ask you a favour," he said, gesturing to his right side where the pokeball hung. "That is empty. I need assistance capturing a new pokemon. I can't show my friends that I'm weak right now, so I've come to the only other person I've met. You."

Jennifer Harsdorff gulped. "Empty? You had a full team when I saw you last. Did Team Chain jump you after you lost or something? Actually, don't answer that. I suppose I could try ordering another starter for you. I'll just need your Trainer ID."

"I'm not looking for a starter," he said, "I don't want some kid friendly adorable little so and so. I want to go out to the wild. Find something with fight. Catch it." His teeth were clenched together for the moment. "And... I want you to train with me. So you can see how I train."

Jennifer Harsdorff sadly shook her head. "I'd love to, but being a Gym Leader, I'm kept rather busy with active research and official business...wait! I know! If you want to train with me, maybe I'll make you a Junior Trainer of mine! That'll hook you up with a steel-type of your choice and you get to attend my private lessons!" She seemed positively giddy about this.

Adam stared down for a moment, then shook his head. "No. My steel types in the center with head trauma right now..." That was not a pokemon battle injury. It had a literal dent in it. That poor Scizor... Adam rubbed his forehead to try to keep on track. "I

Jennifer Harsdorff crossed her arms under her chest. "While you think about it, I can't help but be morbidly curious about the condition of your Pokemon. Would you...would you be kind enough to show me? I might know a few tricks to get them back on their feet."

Down at the center there wasn't much better news to be heard. "Adam Delacroix," he said to the nurse behind the counter, "I dropped off a Scizor and a Charizard."

The nurses face tugged into a frown. "You might want to come through," she responded, gesturing to the side door and marching towards it. Adam rubbed his head.
