a character in “The Mystery of Jerome”, as played by Slorfae

Description

Image
Jeremy Fuller

Role
Navigator

Nickname
Jerry.

Age
24

Description
He's tall and rather awkward. He's given a lot of grief, especially from full-bearded men, for his inability to grow even a stylish mustache. He doesn't shave at all, so the patches of meager red whiskers that he does grow, here and there, are fairly long. Every once and a while he'll trim them down with a pair of scissors so he doesn't look silly.

He has trouble taming his curly red hair, but he also has trouble remembering to cut it so most days it's just a tad too long. He greases it when he wants to look nice. When out in the unforgiving sun he wears a hat. His handsome features are usually lost in thought, and he can look quite dashing and mysterious--at least, until he opens his mouth.

Personality

He gets quite excited about--well, a lot of things. Archaeology and botany are his passions, and he could go on for ages if you don't shut him up. But you should probably also steer away from the subjects of archaeology, aviation, history, literature, or Darwin's theory of evolution if you don't want him to talk your ear off. He talks fast and starts to stutter when he's excited, which is most of the time.

His peers don't take him seriously because of his youth, but he really is quite learned and accomplished.

Fears
He's not fond of snakes or creepy crawlies, but he will put on a brave face and be the manly one if nobody beats him to it.
Also, due to recent... events, he's developed a suspicion of ruffian-types and a fear of guns.

Likes
Books. Learning. History. Current events. Birds and beasts and plants and the way they all work. He loves the mysteries of the world and wants to solve them all, be it science or exploration or that math riddle that everyone else gave up on. He loves facts but also theories.

He's also enchanted by stage productions and used to love to go see shows when he lived in San Francisco. His laugh is the loudest in the theater, and he claps with the most enthusiasm.

Dislikes
Women. He doesn't take them seriously professionally, and he doubts their motives personally. He thinks they're all out for men's money, or to gain power over them, or to just squash them like bugs.

Also, religion. He goes to church every Sunday because it's expected of him, but he really can't sink his heart into any belief with that much nonsense to back it up.

Equipment

Equipment
A compass, of course, but also more books and paper than you really should lug around. Partly this is because he can't stand to not have his reading material around, but also it's because he's currently carrying around all of his worldly possessions.

He's able to keep track of where they are using his sextant, which he recovered after the robbery, and he keeps a journal as they go along.

Skills
For his age he's got many skills, most of which are ignored by those with more experience than he. He's got an astounding memory and can recall facts at the drop of a hat. He can use a sextant and a compass and has an excellent sense of direction. He can name the genus and species of any plant you throw at him, as well as what animal eats it and facts about those, too.

Strengths
He is most useful when you want information or factual knowledge.

Weaknesses
He carries a gun but has the sense not to use it, since he's a terrible shot. Also, he's on the awkward side when it comes to dealing with people directly, especially women.

Weapons
A simple six-shooter which he can't aim for nuthin'. Also, his incredible brain; he's a lot better with that one.

History

Born on November 11 1860 in San Francisco.

Jeremy went to university at St. Ignatius College in 1878 through 1882, during which he met Norman Eldrich, a man of the same age and similar interests. When they graduated with bachelors of arts in botany in 1882, Norman suggested they take the still-new railroad to Tucson to study flora of the Sonoran Desert, where they would find plants that grow no where else in the world. So, they hopped a train to the desert and they spent a year studying plants and animals in and around Tucson.

Norman and Jeremy decided to relocate to Phoenix when they made an acquaintance visiting from there, an older man named Phillip who had spent his years studying the Hohokam ruins. Phillip was delighted to find two young men with academic appetite, and he shared his love of archaeology with them. They spent two years there, and then Norman once again urged his friend to follow him on adventure, northward to find new and unexplored ruins.

The plan was to go to Flagstaff and learn more about the cities they had heard of that were built into the sides of mountains. However, the party didn't even make it that far. They were attacked by robbers outside of Jerome, their guide fled and Norman was shot. Jeremy brought a bleeding Norman to a hospital in Jerome, where he died of an infection.

Penniless, Jeremy took the only job he could find in an uneducated town, a cleaning boy at a local saloon. He's been working there three months and has managed to buy back his sextant from a local pawn shop where it ended up after the robbery, as well as a pistol he feels he needs for self defense now.

He's been living at a bed and breakfast, where the lady took a liking to him and allowed him to stay for a pittance, while he tutors her son in the evenings.

So begins...
