Selene was born to a New York socialite and a French winery owner. Her childhood was spent on the French countryside with her every whim indulged. She was precocious and curious. She had to try everything at least once. Her parents never held her back. In fact, they didn't really know what to do with her. She was often left to her own devices or under the care of various nannies. She learned independence and became resourceful.
Her life took a dramatic left turn when her father took a risk and lost everything. They moved to the states and became middle class. It was a great step down for her parents but it was just another adventure for Selene. As her parents fought and ran up credit cards, Selene was once again left on her own. The streets became a second home and it was there that she learned about true injustice. In her new status, she was no longer indulged. Her ideas were shut down and her proclivities were frowned upon. Her friends had parents working paycheck to paycheck in small, dumpy apartments. She was held back and saw others equally put down. Selene didn't like being told no and refused to buckle.
As her parents bickered and argued about their lot in life, Selene fought back and argued for those with real problems. They did not appreciate the lack of sympathy and tensions erupted between them. It was a relief when Selene left home for college. Only then could she try to fight for real change.
