a character in “The Red Harvest”, as played by ParadigmIX

Description

Name: Lacuna Rolme
Age: 217 recorded years.
Race: Humana Anguis
Appearance: ( Original Picture below is my own.)

Lacuna’s appearance secures his presence as an ominous figure. Standing at 6’5 his body reveals the tone of a man who engages in daily rigorous exercise regimes. His features are naturally dark as the Lavender hood that is usually worn only helps to further conceal his appearance. Lacuna’s eyes give off an ethereal glow from beneath the shadow of his hood just appears almost just as otherworldly. Light in settings that would normally reveal anyone’s face never betrays Lacuna until he –usually- deems otherwise. He is adorned only in the lightest of mail that is underneath his midnight-lavender tabard and armor.

As a Humana Anguis, his skin is usually comprised of very strong scales that serves as his primary means of armor and defense. Unlike the scales of normal reptiles his body feels of the same texture of fine human skin. While Lacuna is a far cry from being invulnerable, he has been able to deflect and withstand the blows and attacks that one would survive if they were well-armoured in battle. It also grants him accelerated healing and resistance to disease and poison that has saved his life a great number of times. Despite these characteristics however perhaps the most interesting fact of his race is that his appearance is never static. With proper concentration and meditation he is able to mold the skin upon his face to match the features of many that he comes into contact with. This natural form of disguise & subterfuge has aided Lacuna in being able to traverse the streets of normal societies without harsh persecution. He does not have perfect memory of the faces he chooses to emulate, thus his appearances are usually just meditations on what he feels is needed. Normally, he chooses the appearance of a handsome man, caramel of skin tone with shortly cut, dark curly hair. Features that are normal for one who hails from the arid climate & sands of Arista. His voice is deep, yet reassuring.

His bane when it comes to the eyes of society is his great tail that extends from his back. While normally coiled behind him underneath his armor to remain hidden, he usually has to rely upon the same magic that makes his skin dynamic to keep his tail hidden. This task requires a great deal of concentration and energy that is usually not worth the effort or time. Thus Lacuna usually just lets his three foot long tail follow behind him, the additional balance and strength that comes with it serving as a bonus to his normal physical attributes.

And yes, when visible he does have fangs. Rawr ;-)

Role/Occupation: Shaman-Cleric, Explorer

Personality

Personality: Lacuna’s mindset is set upon the constant battle of balance. Thus he appears externally calm, perhaps almost unnervingly so. As a practitioner of the artes, he has the air of one who keeps into constant education and discovery. He can be described as patient, regal, and assuring. His time healing others and serving as a diplomat gives him a disposition that suits well to groups. In combat, he is brutal and effective, using his natural tendency to be a tactician to serve his role in the flow of battle.

Because of his natural appearance and the handicap it creates in regards to normal interaction, he can subconsciously try to overcompensate in social situations and become a charmer. While usually harmless, he does find it to be a growing focus and want in his day-to-day existence.

As a cartographer and explorer Lacuna has a natural curiosity about the world around him that reflects in his conversations, ideas, philosophies and projections.

Equipment

Weapons: Lacuna carries a single staff called Aspera that was formed from the wood of the great tree in the middle of Arista’s Oasis. While it does not grant him any magical powers or have extreme properties of its own, it has served Lacuna well for most of his life. Hit has been able to block and parry all manners of weapons without breaking, and seems extremely malleable to many different forms of environments. It does not burn in fire, it does not break in frost, it does not soak in rain, nor does it splinter from shock.

His tail also serves as a massive blunt weapon. It is strong enough to support his entire body weight when balanced upon it. When swung in motion it can break limbs, splinter spears, dent and crack light to medium armor and shields. When his tail coils around the neck, arms, or legs of an enemy what happens when it constricts is nothing short of sickening. The hardened rattle at the end of his tail is something his enemies should always endeavor to avoid.

Magic: As a practioner of the artes, Lacuna’s primary skill is in the realm of energetic healing. As long as you are able to realistically recover/survive an injury, laceration, broken limb(s) Lacuna can conjure his magic to stimulate your body and mind so that the sinews of healing are greatly accelerated. While powerful, he is no miracle worker and his healing is not instantaneous nor a light-exercise. Carelessness will see yourself killed.

Offensively he uses his body as a greater means of protection than his magic, since excessive use of the artes physically drains him. Since his body is attuned to that of the adder, his physical attributes are doubled beyond that of an Olympian at peak ability. He has crafted his own brand of martial art that suits his body and style and has relied upon this mainly through his adventures. His Staff Aspera is an extension of that martial art and serves him loyally.

His arcana artes are mixture of the study of energy and magic. Combined he has been able to channel his skillset that matches those of a cleric. His magic manipulates energy and the four physical elements that surround life. Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. He is no conjuror of these elements and they must be present but he is able to summon the ethereal energies (seen in the pic) and use them to various degrees. His default magic attacks are direct energy bursts and streams sent towards his opponents.

Because of his status and race, he is also spiritually linked to life around him on a deep empathetic level. While this aids his healing, he is able to extend this empathy to communicate and detect obscure forms of life. From speaking with lower serpents, spiders, to hearing the thoughts of birds-of-prey. When in meditation he can trace detections of spirits and other forms of undead but has halted much advancement and study in this area for reasons unknown.

History

Biography: Born in the country of Arista, a land rich in resources despite the deserts that surround her, Lacuna was born and bred to face a world different than most would ever imagine to know. As he was born underneath an uncanny arrangement of healing stars from their country’s sea of constellations, his human infant body was subject to over three hundred distinct series of serpent bites and venomous injections. As predicted however he survived, and slowly his body began to conform to the effects of the ritual. He would become a powerful healer in Arista, showcasing an excellent brilliance in warfare and diplomacy at the same time which saw Lacuna become an advisor the Queen’s counsel. His parents both of which were warrior-generals continued to train him as best as they could until he outlived their existence when he himself reached over 100 years of age, an epoch that was uncanny even for children born underneath the ‘serpent star’.

War would come to Arista as time had revealed on many occasions. The land lay in the middle of a great Oasis that harbored a great abundance of vital resources for the continent’s surrounding major countries. Because of its location and lack of population, the only way Arista could properly defend herself from relentless years of war was to request for and pay for aid from one of their allies. The foremost ally being the powerful country of Valencia. Calling for such aid costs a great deal of money, diplomacy, and resources as the great arid deserts of Arista make caravanning large armies a great expense for outside help.

Having moved beyond simply healing Lacuna had been able to make a name for himself fighting alongside Arista & Valencia’s armies against many threats. However as resources would continually dwindle he would be called on occasion to travel through the Adastra portal, a one-sided gateway that transports whomever goes through to an unknown, random location in the world in order to acquire either enough wealth or diplomatic allies to aid his home country. Traveling through the Adastra was a dangerous task that only three in Arista’s history had survived or returned to tell the tale.

Lacuna had returned on three separate occasions. Bountiful in either expenses or vital information.

So when an even greater war arrived upon Arista’s borders it was no surprise that he was summoned once more from the swarmed frontlines to travel through the Adastra gate. Though angered, because he had never read or encountered a threat to his home as great as the coalition of desperate countries that were trying to destroy Arista for its resources, he complied….not knowing where he would be going, if he would return, or if his home could survive.

Days later, in a land ruled by a technology foreign to him yet intriguing he was approached by an Alchemist after having to dispatch a small band of thugs who found his appearance too uncanny to leave alone, he joined with a group of unknown allies to fetch a lone object that promised him riches enough to solve his problem.

Is this a sign of fate?

Lacuna had kept a brisk pace with the group as they made their way through the ancient crypt. He was relieved with how well they had managed to dispatch the small groups of undead that attempted to end their quest. None of them had sustained injuries and they had at least proven in the meantime, that his services as a healer would only be use when an actual threat came to challenge them.

If that challenge ever came…

The bulk of Lacuna’s body was hidden by a cloak he had outfitted himself before setting out to join with the rest of the team, unlike the lavender and nigh-obsidian that adorned the rest of his garments and armour, this cloak was a deep oak brown. The gentle ambience that emitted from the series of ageless torches did well to hide his features as he walked. He hadn’t spoken to the group as of yet, the only sounds coming from his mouth being the slight grunts of combat made as he fought off the undead that had shambled toward his direction. Strikes from his powerful punches had broken the assault of a few of the undead while his tail was used quickly and acrobatically to smash into the chest cavities of a couple more, the impact sending their bones splintering in many directions and their undead skulls still chomping and gnashing in their eternal unrest. Lacuna had made sure to pay close attention to the focus of his allies when he revealed his tail, not fearing any of them or any sort of reprise but just as a sub-conscious habit formed from years of exploration of peoples un-open to the concept of foreign looks.

He knelt to pick up a short sword that still had the decomposing hand of a restless dead attached to it as the group made their halt in the chamber. The blade was still in stable condition, his fingers running slowly along the edge of the blade to test his theory. Meanwhile his eyes alongside everyone else’s in the party scanned over the myriad of runes, carvings…stories and glyphs that echoed their silent stories and passages. He hadn’t worried when the path before them appeared stalled, as the one in their group who had finally made use of one of his many rings revealed the way before them. Indeed this group was at the least competent, and prepared for a host of situations by looks of their current appearance.

When the door opened, and the party scattered themselves to decide who would be the first to trek through, Lacuna decided that at this moment he would reveal some of the uses that he held. He slowly removed the cloak that had hidden the bulk of his features and allowed the brilliant craft of his armor work radiate within the gloom of the crypt. The tri-peace insignia upon his chest gave off a gentle glow before him as he neared the entrance to the newly opened chamber, one hand resting along the hilt of the blade that he sheathed upon his belt, and the other hand firmly gripping Adastra his trusted staff. He stepped forward, silent graceful steps contradicting the size that he his body held as a light slowly began to form around the hand that held his staff.

With a shallow incantation the light split into tendrils and began to travel languidly along the walls of the passage, Lacuna’s eyes closed in a subtle meditation as he felt the energy and force of the path that they traveled. His now hidden face gave the appearance of a newborn wraith as his eyes were now the only visible part of his head . The energy that crept along the walls served as his new eyes as he navigated their course. Though he could not see what lay ahead of the group, this magick was allowing his body to feel what lay before their path. He was able to discern the stories of spiders as the energy circled over their ancient webs. Ripples of water that the energy cascaded over told their tales of undisturbed ages. But then there were the runes….

He could feel their grooved carvings cast from an unknown maker. He could sense their omens, their purpose, but what they defined was eluding him. As much use as this ability was, it was limited and he had not enough experience in his mental bank to be able to decipher the lore. Such would take some time and unfortunately that was a commodity that they did not have an abundance of. Thus he shook his head and attempted to force his energy onward but then his body was violently shaken out of its meditation. One of the runes that were ahead drew his energies like a magnet and scattered it like an egg fallen from a great height. Before he would come to, his real eyes saw the image of a horrifying Geist, formless yet staring back at Lacuna for that brief moment before his vision cleared and he once again found himself within the confines of the chamber, scanning over his temporary allies before clearing his voice to speak.

His eyes met with those first of Cale before moving back and forth through all that were gathered. If one’s senses were especially sharp, they would notice, albeit just for a second that the colour of the skin upon his arm had a different tone growing from his hands to his arms as he spoke out. The natural caramel tone that was reflected in the light changing match that of the man who was before him.

“ I know not of the dangers that may await us and our prize, however I feel that for the while, our group’s passage is clear until a certain ways….half a league if mercy smiles upon us.”

He then arced his hands towards the group, drawing out a new sphere of energy and letting it disperse over their feet. The glow would surround their boots as long as they held no natural resistances and or were unwilling to have foreign magick envelop them. He stomped his foot hard to demonstrate the padding effect that his spell was currently placing on their feet. While it would not offer complete silence for stealth, for a group of their size the added quite could come in handy. "My name is Lacuna", he bowed solemnly before continuing "this shall be a boon to our quest. May we find what we are searching for in good fortune."

“Come” he then spoke out before quickly taking off into the passage at a brisk pace. While he was far from a rogue or scout, Lacuna’s natural body was well adapted to such places and climates. His eyes were trying their best to scan what he had felt before. He knew that he would eventually be surpassed by one of his group, perhaps the rogue would even get deeper into the crypt than he but at the least progress was being made.

Lacuna was no stranger to meeting the unknown head on, thus he moved ahead with only a small moment’s anxiety before the adventure settled within his mind. His concentration could not afford to deal with such emotions while he tried his best to make sure that his allies’ sounds weren’t heightened as they went forward.
