Myth: The Sphinx is a creature shared in both Egyptian and Greek Mythology, the differences between the two being startling in their character. The Greek Sphinx was a riddler, a massive lion with the head and chest of a woman and the wings of a vast eagle. If any man could not solve her riddle she would devour him whole and alive and no man could answer until Oedipus crossed her path. "Which creature in the morning goes on four legs, at mid-day on two, and in the evening upon three, and the more legs it has, the weaker it be?" This was answered (Manβwho crawls on all fours as a baby, then walks on two feet as an adult, and then walks with a cane in old age) and, in despair, the Sphinx threw herself to her her death from atop a cliff.
The Egyptians believed the Sphinx was a guardian, a sacred protector of royalty, seen to be flanking the entraces to tombs. Benevolent rather than malevolent, he (Typically Sphinxes were male in Egyptian culture) was still a powerful creature and often statues were inscribed with the names of the Gods themselves as representation of their power and devotion.
In either account the Sphinx was a mysterious and wise creature with intelligence to match it's ferocious power.
Appearance: At only 5' 10" with a slim build Demetrius is far from an imposing figure. He is not muscular, nor athletic and not blessed with great speed or physical skill. He is also very pale, oweing to the amount of time he spends locked away inside. His pale face is set with eyes of a casual, deep brown and framed by straight, black hair that falls in length to his shoulders.
Usually sporting a healthy amount of stubble and glasses, he is not the most outwardly self-pampered person to go on the expedition, far from it. Clothing is usually to include a plain, black winter coat over a black tee-shirt and dark jeans.
Personality: Demetrius is usually extremely introvert, tending to let his pen speak in his place. Keeping to himself is a large part of every day to him, usually shunning visitors or saying little when they are around. However, while not speaking his mind is often in overdrive, attempting to figure people out, logic always leading him to conclusions before even getting to know people. He relies more on himself than anyone else as a feircly independent person that is not likely to ask for help.
Back story: Born and raised in a small town in Tennesse by his Greek father and American mother, Demetrius' great mental ability were picked up at a young age. He was far ahead of any of his peers at school in almost all academic areas and his potential skyrocketed when he was moved forward a year. Being the smallest, yongest, and smartest in the year was tough for him. He was constantly bullied and did not make friends very easily, though this was a trait that was present before the move also. As a result he folded in on himself, concentrated on his work and extra-curricular studies and made few friends throughout high school.
When the time came to go to college to study English the story was much the same. He prefered books over human company and spent most of his free time writing. By the time he was 22 years old he had published a book which made the top 10 bestsellers list for the state. By 25 he had released an entire series but relative fame did little to change his outlook. He remained isolated from the world and developed depression despite numerous other notable achievements which include acceptance into MENSA and a published book on riddles. From a young age Demetrius became enthralled with riddles and spent hours challenging himself in the comfort of his own room. However, despite his high IQ he could rarely answer them, leading himself to constantly read yet more and more, at last content with a constant challenge.
After the success of his first book, Demetrius' father brought him a replica of a Greek dagger, equally as sharp as any original would have been, as a sign of his heritage. Since then he has carried it with him from home to home as the only link he ever had with either of his parents. His inability to socialise well had led to them drifting apart, having little in common and eventually to their meeting becoming a rare occurance.
