Super-organism

Hive is a massive amount of insects with - you guessed it, a hivemind. They can change between forms freely. This means they can cut off their arm and transform it into a swarm of insects without harming their selves and reattaching it whenever they feel like it. Most physical attacks do no to minimal damage because of this. Hive can technically keep on living even after their human head is cut off. Also, while killing the queen would release the hivemind, it's a lot smaller than a brain or heart. On the flip side, Hive is particularly vulnerable to fire, cold, pheromones and poison.

When Hive takes damage, some insects die. They can replenish their numbers, making it nigh impossible to do permanent damage to Hive. However, regeneration is nowhere near instant. In the meanwhile they find it hard to give their selves human shape with lesser numbers. This meaning that rather than becoming a smaller version of their human form, they will become an incomplete version. For example, they'll be missing a limb, or part of their face. Also the more damage taken, the longer it takes to replenish their numbers and the weaker Hive is.

Hive can still be controlled by mages, as long as the queen is under the hypnotic effect. While this hardly makes a difference from other demons when Hive is in human form, exerting control is extremely difficult if the insects disperse before they are chained to a mage's will. Unless you feel controlling a single fly at a time is useful, of course.

Enhanced physical ability

In his human form, Hive is strong as he is fast. He can wrestle a mountain gorilla and play tag with antelopes or mountain goats. These abilities may decrease when damaged, however.

Insect Transmutation

Now you see a forearm, and now you see the blade of a praying mantis! Hive can transform parts of his human body into an insect's. Growing wings, poisonous stingers, compound eyes, it's all there. Though the location of needs to correspond to their counterparts. Hive cannot grow eyes on their back, or transform their toes into wings.

Character Opinions

Etelka Lantos
"A magekiller? Tsch. We've seen your true face, slave-girl, and it weeps in fear."

Etelka is an unpleasant reminder for Hive. She and him once shared a master, but their disposition towards Ervin Lantos was completely different. While both served out of fear, Hive constantly scouted the borders of Ervin's control and eventually played key to his demise, whereas Etelka played an obedient object of lust and violence. Hive once silently held a hope he could find an ally in her, but he was unfortunately disappointed. Hive harbours a distaste for Etelka and the memories her presence brings up, but more than anything hates the façade she puts up at the academy.

Bugby Marshall
"You smell familiar... Why do we have no memory of you?"

Bugby and Hive may be complete strangers to one another, but Hive cannot shake the feeling they are somehow related... Both demons can sense each other's presence, but how?

Liliane Auringer
"Will you savour our wisdom... Or follow the path of the slavers?"

Hive's old master was an important shareholder of the supersoldier project that built Liliane. On one of his visits, Hive infiltrated her sleeping quarters out of curiosity. He felt his situation was similar to Liliane's and he questioned her perspectives. In turn, Hive tempted Liliane with tales of curiosity and freedom. Years later, Hive wonders what remains of the thoughts he planted. Have they blossomed into understanding? Or has she grown up to be yet another puppet of the mages' so-called order? They will learn in due time.

Cleo Gardenia
"Don't you dare put a leash on this one..."

Cleo was Hive's guardian angel, who blessed him with sanctuary in a time of need. Irony of wording aside, Hive strongly identifies with demon cat's free-spirited nature. He feels a strong bond with her, even if Cleo's childish nature might occasionally get on his nerves. Hive acts like somewhat of an older brother to Cleo in that he feels partially responsible for her safety and can be very protective of Cleo, although he prefers not to show that side to others.

History
Locusts swarms are a biblical terror. One particularly ambitious demon experimented bringing back the wrath of god, but on the leash of the underworld. The result was a demon unlike anyone had ever seen, but so ravenous it received the name Gluttony. The demon soon learned it's hunger was without boundary and beyond it's control; as it would tear through even walls and as it grew, would be sure to threaten the continued existence of the human world.

Recognising the potential damage Gluttony could cause, mage- and demon-kind co-operated to control and transform it into a more manageable form. It's powers were sealed to control limited numbers and the queen, once a locust, was replaced by a bee. To prevent single-minded hunger, multiple insects were accumulated so that not one trait would grow to an extreme and another Gluttony would never be born. Instead, the demon was named Hive.

However, now revealed to the human world, there would be no escape from magecraft for Hive. They were taken under the command of an old but powerful wizard. Hive was unable to escape the man's powerful magic dominance, but fortunately his master made a mistake during a duel with an old rival; giving Hive the window of opportunity to escape and leave his master to die in battle.

For years, Hive roamed the world freely, causing all kinds of mischief and trouble. However eventually, they were caught and considered a 'misbehaving demon'. Now, they have been forcefully enrolled as such, doomed to serve under yet another mage, yet again...

Kou did not want to wake up. After Mikari had returned her to her basket in the infirmary she had gone right back to sleep, resting peacefully until dawn poked through the windows and tickled her closed eyelids. It was a bother having to readjust herself so that the sun was not in her face and eventually Kou gave up and rose, the pain lessening to a dull throb that was more a nuisance than anything. I wonder if he'll keep his promise? Kou thought as she stretched, looking around the empty room. No one had gone to the infirmary after the exercise so Kou had been here all alone, with only Nurse Julie coming to check on her every now and again.

She hated it. While the basket was very comfortable, the realization that Kou was stuck in another room all alone was not. Kou hated being lonely, it is what had put her in this state in the first place. Or maybe it was that other thing she and Mikari had discussed? The strong emotions? Regardless the rabbit was not pleased with being on her own, she wished Ruzik were here with his odd quips and sudden temper tantrums, at least as an animal he wouldn't hurt her. At least, not anymore then he already had. Even a mage would be better company than the wafting curtains and smell of cleaning supplies. At this point Kou would have appreciated a visit from anyone.

Nurse Julie had retired to her room after Mikari had returned. He had informed Julie that there really wasn't anything he could do and they would have to wait until morning. So wait she did. Julie retired to her corridors, setting her alarm to go off every two and a half hours to check on her patient. Thankfully no students had returned from Memphis's exercise injured so there was no need to remain stationed in the infirmary all night. Just in case though Julie had left a note posted as to where to find her in case of an emergency so students and teachers alike would know she had gone to sleep.

Julie needed a break. She headed outside of the building, a cool breeze sliding loose strands of hair from her bun into her face and sat on a bench by the entrance of the school; grabbing a pencil and her notebook from her pockets. Writing always helped clear her head, whenever Julie was frustrated or distraught she would whip out the tiny binder decorated in gold leaf. She had become so immersed in her task that the nurse had hardly noticed a purple haired male with golden eyes approach. "Excuse me, Ma'am?" He asked, startling the nurse. She dropped her pencil and looked up, her eyes widening at the sight of him. "I seem to have lost something very important to me. She's white and small and very fluffy, do you know where I could find her?" There was no doubt about it, from the aura radiating off of this young man Julie could tell that the celestial being before her was in fact Tsukuyomi.

"Y-yes!" Quickly Julie collected her things, pocketing her fallen pencil and closing the notebook. "Right this way," Julie led the man inside through the maze of a school to the infirmary. She glanced over her shoulder every now and again to ensure that she wasn't dreaming and to make sure that he was still following her. "In here, she might still be asleep though so do your best to remain quiet." Julie popped the door open, Tsukuyomi brushing past her and rushing towards her desk where the rabbit was now awake, but still laying on her side as though all the life had been drained out of her.

"Kou!" Tsukuyomi cried, causing the rabbit to look up. Without warning he scooped Kou up in his arms, cradling the animal like a child. What are you doing here? Kou questioned, rather alarmed by her owner's sudden appearance. "That's no way to greet your master." Tsukuyomi chided, pulling something from his pocket. Kou recognized it, the red and white ribbon with bells on the end that had served as her collar. He fastened it around the rabbit's neck and held her close so that she could hear his heartbeat. "I've come to take you home... Is what I'd like to say." Tsukuyomi held her back for a second, as if examining her. "But you still haven't learned your lesson."

Muse was dead tired when she arrived back to her dorm. Liliane was already there, firing off questions that the demon did not care to answer. Instead the demon pulled off her torn attire, folding it neatly and placing it under the bed. The gash that little monster had caused her was in full view, almost healed by now. Muse lay on her side, her eyes drifting open and shut. "I'll tell you all about it in the morning," the girl promised and crawled under the covers as she was cold in nothing but her underwear. Muse had no other clothing, she had no belongings and so the demon was unsure as to what she would do as far as dressing herself went.

Oh well, she would worry about that in the morning.

Muse awoke to an announcement. Her temples throbbed from the sudden voice intruding her dreams and she sat up, rubbing her eyes. The female went into the bathroom, attempting to figure out where she could get water from and jumping when she turned a spigot and warm liquid came rushing out, soaking her. Muse stripped the rest of the way, washing herself under the boiling water as fast as she could. In truth the heat felt good on her dirty body, but as time progressed the water began to sting and she shut it off, quickly drying herself to avoid the cold and replacing her undergarments.

When Muse caught sight of herself in the mirror something inside of the demon snapped. Mirrors had always been her enemy for one reason or another so when Muse glanced at herself and found her green eyes gazing back at her a blood curdling scream ripped from her throat. She clutched her skull, backing into the wall and sliding against it until she was sitting, rocking herself on the floor and muttering incoherently. After a minute Muse began to cry, choking on her sobs. "No, no, no. Muse is a good girl, a very good girl." It could have been PTSD, but with the memory loss there was no telling.

Kou had just finished fastening her shoes when Ruzik poked his head in to see if she was dressed, then entered a split second later. "Well I like you better when you're not all angry." Kou said and entwined her finger's in his. She was glad that he was going to try and find a different way to deal with his temper as Kou could not take it anymore. She hated it that she allowed herself to be treated like that. To be emotionally abused in hopes that it would make Ruzik feel better.

The things demons do for love.

"Oh? They're really going to take us out so early into the year? I would've thought that they would at least wait until we had learned a few manners." She followed Ruzik, taking his hand in her's and hoping that their absence had not been noticed by anyone aside from Momoko and Etelka. Kou didn't want others to know she had turned back into a rabbit, she was afraid that they would consider her weak and spineless. She was ashamed that Etelka had seen her like that and that the rabbit had needed someone to rescue her. Kou was never going to let that happen again. She was determined to become stronger, to be better than the mages and demons in this Academy.

As they exited the building, the entrance to the Academy was within their sights. "What part of the town do you think they're going to take us to?" Kou asked excitedly, her heels sinking a bit into the grass. For a second she was tempted to pick a few blades to nibble on, but Kou quickly remembered herself and the fact that she was human again. "So where are those carrots you promised me?" Kou teased, full-well knowing that Ruzik had none and that the cafeteria was most likely closed until lunch.

Muse followed Liliane's gaze to the apparent Momoko. She was a girl with short blond hair and wearing some sort of garb. Muse turned her head back to Liliane, nodding her head in consensus with the girl's plan. "Yes, new clothing would be nice. But what about for yourself? Surely there's something you would like in the town as well?" When Muse had awoken this morning she had noticed that Lili was wearing some sort of device over her ears, a music player perhaps? Maybe Muse could help Lili find some songs to put on it? Of course Muse had no idea how these things worked, otherwise she would have known that it wasn't as easy as walking into a store and buying a song.

"It wasn't all that exciting," Muse replied. "We went to fight these monsters, Cleo and I teamed up, Hive flew away, I don't know where he went, and then Laurence closed the portal or whatever that thing was." Muse didn't mention that she had lost herself in blood lust and had found out that she had the instincts of a killer. That was probably why she had been sent here, because she could kill mercilessly and without a second thought.

The girl Lili had referenced to earlier, Momoko, walked over and asked if she could join them. "I'm fine with it if Liliane is. I'm Muse," up close Muse could see that she was exotic and quite pretty. "How do you suppose we're going to communicate outside?" Muse couldn't speak English, she only knew German and Muse doubted that anyone else in their class spoke it. Wait a second, how had they been able to communicate yesterday on the mission of none of them spoke the same language?

Their mage parted ways from the other group, joining them and expressing her joy at seeing that things had worked out between them. Kou smiled, she seemed to be doing that a lot lately. It wasn't anyone's business what had happened between the two and the fact that even Momoko seemed clueless as to the events that took place pleased her. "Yes, hopefully things will run a bit smoother now." Kou replied, unconsciously tugging at the edge of her dress. She was also very glad to hear the news that the school was funding this trip and they would be able to purchase whatever they needed. Which for Kou meant more clothes and possibly some sweets.

It was at that moment they began to walk out of the school, the bells ringing with every step she took.

When they reached the town the Headmaster had some parting words for them, which unfortunately for Group's 1 and 4 were more of a warning since he would be the one to watch them. Then there was the announcement of a "surprise" activity which Kou decided she was not going to give too much thought to as she tended to over think those types of things. Ruzik suggested something and Kou tuned out as the group conversed, jumping back in when Momoko mentioned clothes. "Yes, I thikn that's a wonderful idea." Kou agreed, it would give the girl's time to do some serious shopping and not have to drag the boys along for the ride. "I'll see you later," Kou said and kissed Ruzik's cheek. She let go of his hand and stepped over to where Momoko, Etelka, and Venom were. The third demon had seemingly popped out of nowhere, echoing the demon and mage's desires.

It was obvious to Kou that something was bothering Etelka the way the girl kept her eyes low and her posture slouched. Perhaps she didn't like being outside? Or maybe the sun was in her eyes? Kou shrugged and shook her head. "Etelka, do you want to maybe get an umbrella while we're here?" Kou suggested quietly so as not to embarrass the Succubus. Then, a bit louder Kou asked Momoko. "What's a textile?" Unfortunately the rabbit had never had an opportunity to learn to read, much less to write so she really was clueless about anything with words.

Tsukuyomi crossed his arms as they teleported into Mikari's room. Dark magic always gave him the creeps, but Tsukuyomi was not going to let Mikari know that. Then he would have something to use against him and the God didn't want to be seen as weak for something as stupid as being afraid of the dark. When the light of the room reappeared Tsukuyomi flopped down onto Mikari's couch, running a hand through his hair. Yes, those two love-birds would be the cause of his death if things kept going this way. Especially if Ruzik continued to insist that Kou was his. "There shouldn't be anymore problems, although if Kou does become a bit of an emotional wreck again, depending on whether she gets mad her abilities can get out of hand. That's any demon though." Tsu leaned back, unsure if this was really what Mikari wanted to ask him.

"What am I really doing in your room? And don't play the concerned Sensei, I'm not falling for that one bit." He sighed when Mikari called him a pervert again. It seems the dark mage was not going to drop the nickname. "Yes, in this form I am as weak as you. However unlike you I can turn back into my original form whenever I want." Tsu's abilities also had a much wider range since he was after-all a God.

Muse watched as Momoko parted ways, jumping at the chance to rejoin her original group. Muse didn't blame her, she would have felt awkward and most likely would have been standing off to the side alone like last night had Liliane not been with them. It seems there were a few students missing, including Hive, but before Muse could question this the Headmaster announced it was time to go. It seems that Cleo, Ichiro, and Hive would not be joining them on their trip to the town. Or maybe they would be catching up later? Bugby bounded over towards them in that moment after it was announced that he would be joining their group, suggesting that they leave.

"Yes, it's probably best. Do you know what happened to the others?" Muse asked, scratching behind one of her horns. She seemed to be making a habit of this and Muse bit down on her lip to keep from doing it again. She was not going to get into bad habits, not now when she was trying so hard to be on her best behavior. They reached the town rather quickly and again Memphis spoke, announcing a surprise that seemed to send a few groups into a flurry of excited whispers. Or maybe they were talking about something else? Muse didn't know and quite frankly didn't care.

"So what should we do first?" The demon asked Liliane and Bugby. The town was rather big and there was an abundance of activity coming from all around. At first Muse attempted to follow some of it but her head began to spin and so she shook her head and returned her attention to the present. "We could just walk around if you guys want?" They could waste their hour by going in and out of shops and simply browsing the shelves. Of course Muse still needed clothes but she didn't want to bug the two with her needs. "Or we could find a food store and stock up?" Who knows when the cafeteria would serve a meal none of them liked?

#, as written by Kestrel
It was so very convenient Mr. Kurayami and his associate were dealing with any further conflicts. Hive grinned. In spite of his taunts, he'd been well-behaved... Well-behaved enough not to warrant a second glance. Back on the ground, skipping over the pieces of rubble he'd dropped to the ground, Hive found himself next to Cleo. “Sssh,” He hushed, as he touched the forearm of the usually excitable Cleo. “This is our chance, follow me.” Hive said, as he drifted to the back of the group.

Cleo’s ears perked up upon hearing a familiar voice, turning her gaze over to look at Hive as he touched the girls arm and quietly spoke something to her. At first the feline didn’t quite understand and merely gave a questioning stare, until what he was suggesting finally hit her and Cleo gave a faint meow in response as the cat mentally debated what her course of action would be. On the one hand Cleo felt that she had to stay as it was the right thing to do accruing to the teachers, whilst on the other hand it also felt right to follow Hive as she knew him best, in comparison to their school. Then again there was also the issue of Ichiro to consider, and as his demon the feline felt compelled to stay with him.

But if Cleo did leave with Hive, then there was also the chance she could return and come back for her mage at some point. That sounded like a plan, or at least it reassured her and made the girl feel better about leaving. Even if her decision was made in only a few seconds, it would work. She’d make it work. Giving a nod to herself the feline slowed her pace down gradually so that she was able to drift backwards and allow the other students to pass her without suspicion, and soon enough she lingered at the back beside her friend. As she kept to the back and dropped her pace even more a gap began to emerge between the two demons and the rest of the group, though no one seemed to notice or minded. Even the Headmaster hadn’t bothered to glance behind him, which Cleo had noticed and then whispered to Hive, “Come on.”

The academy entrance was fast approaching and soon the group would be passing through it, to which Cleo motioned for the bug-demon to follow as she casually drifted off the path leading to it. Maybe the whole idea was a little amusing to the girl, filling her with visible excitement though she’d try to ensure that she didn’t get carried away, at least not just yet.

The strength of their vanishing act was like a magician’s, subtle and making use of the elsewhere directed attention. The experiences of everyone seemed to have them so distracted, nobody had paid mind to the two slipping away. Like Cleo, Hive wore the sense of excitement on his face. After all his efforts to gather information and seep into the cracks of the academy, it was this simple opportunity that had gotten him away from it. What a beautiful thing. He could hardly keep himself from snickering, as the image of the academy drifted further from the horizon.

The feeling bolstered with every step Hive took and flowed within his pace. From a subtle detour, Hive now felt almost like running. Off the beaten path, Hive had lead Cleo into more open lands. They were still close enough to civilisation, here and there the odd road swayed through the landscape. Yet the scent of the grasslands was positively different from the academy’s.

“Ah
The air.” Hive breathed in deep when they’d come to a stop. He let himself drop into the grass, which colour had already attached itself to his boots and now claimed spots on his jacket as well. “We have missed this feeling.” Hive smiled. The sense of being free again caught Hive in a state of euphoria. His smile evolved into a chuckle. Hive felt a positive energy flowing through all of his bodies as he started to laugh out loud.

“Free, Cleo, can you believe it, we are free!” He roared, unable to contain the raw emotion. “Finally free!”

Cleo had followed Hive onto more open fields of land and for a moment stood idly and observed as her companion enjoyed the fresh air around them. “Aren’t you exaggerating just a bit? There’s air everywhere, silly.” She teased lightly before kneeling down onto the ground near the bug-demon. “But I understand what you mean
it’s different in some strange way.” Smiling, the feline let out a content purr and allowed her ears to flicker in the cool breeze.

Exhaling a long yawn the girl dropped onto her side as she hit the ground and lay in a state of fatigue. “It’s pretty late,” Cleo said and shot a quick glance to the night sky. “We should sleep and continue in the morning, maybe find some food and stuff?” It was hardly surprising for the cat to think of her stomach above everything else, though given how far they had gone in such a small bit of time Cleo wasn’t that worried about the pair being found by the academy just yet.

“Anyway, sleep, sleep.” Pulling her body over and crawling next to the other demon Cleo plopped down against his side lazily, before looking up to Hive. “It’ll be nice to sleep beneath the stars like the old days, out in the grass and fresh air, huh?” Cuddling against him and wrapping her arms round the bug-demon softly the girl began to drift off without little effort. Whether he companion would sleep too she couldn’t guess, but the feline was knackered and needed her rest! So hopefully he wouldn’t mind a little nap for the cat’s sake.

Morning came almost too soon. Hive had let a few of his insects nibble off the grass, coated in morning dew. Even though he woke early
It wasn’t like Hive to sit still. Yet today, he simply let his eyes wander the morning glory as he waited for Cleo to wake up and move her head off of his stomach.

Though Hive could feed off the grass for the time being, Cleo could not. He’d have to break this moment of serenity sooner or later
The academy would come looking for them. Yet at that point, as far as his insects left at academy grounds were concerned, Cleo and he weren’t missed yet

Cleo began to stir and right away her ears began to flicker, a sign that movement was about her as the feline began to animate shortly after. Yawning, she pushed herself up a little and looked onto a familiar face. “Morning.” She greeted with a purr, before fully sitting upright on the ground and off the bug-demon.

“Morning.” Hive grinned back.

It took a few minutes for the girl to remember where they were and that they had left the academy. “Guess no one has come this way?” She said, referring to perhaps mages who may have been looking for them. “I wonder how everyone is doing without us, if they even notice we’re gone.” Mainly her teammates naturally, who she was beginning to miss but she’d suck it up for now, hoping to hide her anxiety for them. Just then suddenly a loud noise erupted from deep in her stomach and the girl let out a small whine. “I guess I’m pretty hungry.” She added with a sheepish giggle before getting to her feet and standing up slowly.

Turning her gaze over across some of the land Cleo then raised a hand and pointed in the direction that she faced. “I smell food that way,” Her senses were more heightened than others given her cat in-heritage, and knowing her, if she smelt food then Cleo was probably right. “Tell you what, let’s race! Like we did in the old days, sound fun? Ok, ok
 On your marks, get set
” Before she had even finished the girl had already sprang forward and hurried ahead, being a tad sneaky perhaps, though hunger was most likely driving her sudden eagerness.

“They’re doing-” Hive tried to answer, but Cleo had already sprinted off. “Cheeky, cheeky.” Hive said to himself, as he pushed himself up to chase after Cleo. Hive wondered where Cleo’s nose would bring them
But until his scouts warned him of pursuers, he was not to worried about it.

Cleo had run a good distance before showing signs of slowing her pace down, as the feline took a moment to look back at her companion as he followed. As well, after looking to Hive the girl stared elsewhere and inhaled a deep sniff. Without saying a word Cleo pushed onward and returned to a light run, knowing Hive would follow and not doubt her sense of smell as the feline ran to where her nose lead her.

Running through the open lands of grass Cleo had soon brought the pair to a small woodland area and delved inside through the trees without a second thought, weaving in and out through them with great speed until suddenly coming to an abrupt halt halfway. With a tired breath she hunched over with her hands to her hips, ears flickering to whatever sound they picked up.

“There’s a town close by.” She said, though Hive likely already knew. The food she smelled was most likely from within the walls of the town itself, but simply walking into such a place may not be a wise action to take. Even from where they were, some distance aways, Cleo could practically taste the food and her stomach quietly rumbled a little. Just then however the girl lowered her ears suddenly and looked about, eyes wide and alert, as if something were near them. But for all the eye could see nothing was actually there and yet a sense tickled at her nose, as if warning Cleo. “I sense something.”

Whatever it was she didn’t know, and yet from seemingly nowhere a mouse sprang out from the bushes and darted about the small open patch of dirt before them. Cleo nearly jumped in surprise before offering a hiss to the creature, attempting to nab it with her hand but the small thing wriggled out of her grasp. “Damn mouse, you’re not what I sensed
. Were you? Hm.” The mouse continued to squeak and scamper about in front of the girl as if taunting her, as Cleo tried to catch it with little avail.

The two had often hunted together, so when Cleo started chasing the mouse, Hive lifted from the grass by beating his transparent beetle wings and hovered silently in wait until it would come his way. Unaware of it’s pursuer’s partner in predation, the mouse was skewered by Hive’s stinger within a flash. The bug demon offered Cleo the mouse, sticking it out like a marshmallow on a stick, as his boots reconnected with the grass.

.“Curious. What do you sense?” Hive asked. Cleo’s hearing was superior to his own and her sense of smell picked up different scents. The two often noted different things. “Is it in the town?” Hive wondered, though a little wary. They weren’t far away enough from the academy to leisurely stroll through the local population. Even if Hive felt little for playing hide and seek for the coming weeks.
