The Beniamino crossbow
This is an interesting weapon to be sure. The crossbow was designed and crafted by the inventor and declared heretic Beniamino Canavacciuolo, of the Free Cities, which are clustered around the Holy City of Anorix. The stock of the weapon resembles that of the newly invented arquebus. In front of the firing lever is a handgrip that can be pumped up and down, causing a number of gears inside the stock to turn. This causes the bow string to be drawn back and is ready to fire after four pumps. Both Beniamino and the crossbow disappear thirty years ago, fleeing from Church Knights sent to arrest him for making crossbows, along with a dozen other charges. The crossbow reappeared ten years ago, in the hands of a Vampire hunter named Julius Montagna

History

Julius was born in the fortress town of Novaesium, up in the Ortler Mountains. Like many other Anorians, his grandparents raised him and his older bother, as both his mother and father were vampire hunters. His was a fairly normal childhood, among the mountains. At the age of seven, he was enrolled in a special school, were the teachers were those that had either been crippled on the hunt or survived to old age. It was there he learned about ghouls and zombies, bloodlings and vampires. He learned how to make them weak and how to kill them. He was taught marksmanship with a crossbow and swordsmanship with a number of blades.

At the age of sixteen, his class (Anorians, other races of men and werewolves alike) were split into six man teams, along with a novice Gideonian Friar, a novice Daughter of Isabella and sent out into the field, taken under the wing of veterans for the next four years. By the time they were allowed out on their own, their number had reduced by one, killed by a bloodling during a hunt the first hunt. He was selected to be Hunt Master of the team, for his personal bravery and his quick thinking during a battle with a town overrun with ghouls, where he saved the lives of two of his fellow rookies and managed to turn the tide of the fight in the favor of the Hunters.

For the next ten years, they traveled about the lands, following orders sent to them. They faced a score or so of vampires, triple the number of bloodlings and countless ghouls or zombies. At the age of thirty, after a decade of service, the team was allowed a customary rest, of roughly a year’s time. During that year, he had a romance with the daughter of a crossbow maker and she bore him a daughter. He has one year left, before the second decade of service is over and he had return to see his child.
