Guinevere O'Callaghan

A work of art which did not begin in emotion is no art.

a character in “The Variant Code”, as played by SarcasticZombie

Description

Name: Guinevere “Gwenny” O’Callaghan
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Power: Pathokinesis/Epathetic manipulation: Gwenny can sense others feelings, moods, and their affects and in turn she can manipulate their emotions how she wants. She can increase, decrease, cause, and also channel the emotions. She doesn’t know it yet, but with enough control over her power she can manifest emotional energy to a physical level.
Weaknesses: She absorbs the emotion that she is replacing which in turn means she needs to have plenty of self control in order to keep that emotion she replaced from taking over and causing her to feel that way which isn’t always the easiest thing to do. Using her power drains her and she’ll often get a major headache and often has panic attacks. The use of her power wears on her mentally and she fears that if she uses it too much she will be driven insane.
Appearance: Image
Personality and alignment:
Guinevere can be a rather emotionally unstable girl, much of it having to do with her power. She can always sense the emotions of others and she tries to not let it affect her, but a lot of the time she can’t help it. She often has panic attacks and doesn’t often like to be around people. This causes others to believe she is stuck up and think she’s better than others. Once a person can see past this, however, they find out that she is actually a very kind person that truly cares about others. She would do anything to help put a person she’s created a bond with. Creating that bond is usually the difficult part though. She’d rather take care of herself first before taking care of others only because she knows it would be better in the long run.

Her alignment is neutral because she does whatever she thinks is the best idea at the time.
Occupation: Artist
History: Guinevere is the only child of her parents and grew up in a rather normal household. Her parents loved each other and loved her as much as a parent could. She grew up ignorant to how cruel the world actually was. Then when she was 13, her and her mother were on their way to a restaurant after a long girls day out shopping. They were going to meet her father for dinner. When they were only a few blocks from the restaurant they were hit by a drunk driver that ran a red light. She remembers watching the truck plow into her mother’s side of the car and then things went black.

When she came to she was still in the car and blood was trickling down her forehead. She felt a sharp pain in her ribs and was trying to remember what happened when she saw her mother. She wasn’t conscious and her breathing was faint. She went to shake her to wake her up and that’s when she felt her mothers fear. This sent Gwenny into and panic which in turn transferred that emotion to her mom. Before she knew it her mother’s heart rate accelerated and she ended up dying. This is when she went into a full on panic attack and as paramedics tried to help her out of the car each one went into a panic as well when they touched her until someone finely put her to sleep.

That was when she first recognized the power that she had and for years tried to pretend it wasn’t there until the headaches and panic attack worsened. Now for the last three years she’s been trying to teach herself how to control her emotions and along with that her powers. Little does she know that the government has taken notice of her and is waiting for an opportunity to bring her in.

So begins...

The Beginning

Night had fallen on the city of Nessmond and the night life was buzzing. It wasn’t a large city like Boston or New York City, but it wasn’t small either. It had plenty of tall buildings in the center of the city and then regular houses and a warehouse district as you got further out all around the town. The very outskirts of town turned into farmland and then into woods. To get to the next town it would take you a good 45 minutes in a car with not much in between besides a few houses here and there. It always amazed people how populated the city was since it seemed to be so isolated. But there it was, the city of Nessmond.

At the moment it was nearing the end of summer and going into fall which many were glad of since the summer seemed to be so hot this year. Winters weren’t pleasant either, however, with lots of snow and cold temperatures. Many looked forward to when both spring and fall came around because that’s when the weather was just right.

So as mentioned before, night had fallen on the city and it was finally cool enough for the people living within the city to go out and have some fun. Many would go to nightclubs, others would just walk around the center of the city just for the fun of it. Others had jobs that they worked at night and some had just gotten off work and didn’t want to do anything except get home and crawl into bed.

This wasn’t the case for Gwenny, however, as she unlocked the doors to the art gallery and dragged her stuff inside. She didn’t own the art gallery, but she was close with the people who did and since she had a few pieces in there and also helped out when they needed it they had given her a key. It wasn’t often she came to the gallery at this time, but she was known to do it every now and then. The reason she was there tonight was because she had needed some inspiration for a new piece and she couldn’t get that at home. Well that and the owners had mentioned that there may be a guy coming that night to fix the computers and asked if she could be there to let him in. So there she was, making use of her time to paint as she waited.

As she set up her art supplies she could hear the loud music coming from the nightclub that was next door. She smiled softly to herself as she knew this would be the perfect inspiration for her. Not the music, but the emotion. The emotion of all the people inside that she could feel. Happiness. Confidence. Desire. These were all things she could feel and so she got to work as she dipped her brush into a color and drug it across the canvas.

As she painted she wondered if there was a night gaurd on duty tonight there at the gallery or not. Sometimes they hired one, but it wasn’t always consistent. She wondered if she would know the night guard and then thought about what she’d do if she didn’t. She knew it would look weird to have a woman sitting there painting. If he started to cause a problem she could always use her power to calm him down. No she’d only use that as a last resort she figured. Well she’d deal with it if the time came.

William sat in the corner. It was nights like this he wasn't too fond of, the night club next door was packed and loud with numerous people coming in and out. But he had a job to do. He wasn't always hired here at this art gallery but when he was he usually loved it. Nobody ever came or caused trouble. As he sat thinking however he heard the small click of the front door... He was informed by the owners about an IT worker coming to fix a computer problem but, something didn't sit right with how nonchalantly this mystery person had entered the gallery.

So he stood from his chair, moving silently and quickly towards the noises. He stopped just behind the corner of the main room hearing some strange sound... He slowly peered around the corner noticing a young woman contently painting away...

"how did she... Why..." His mind ran through numerous questions before he caught up to them.

William slowly made his way to the front door, careful not to alert the woman as he checked the door for any signs of forced entry... He found none.

"Who the hell would break into an art gallery to paint anyway." He wondered to himself.

He made his way back to the main room, now much less weary of the woman.

"The art gallery is closed." He spoke firmly

Melodyn took a deep breath letting the music of the club pour over her readying for their show they booked for tonight. They normally didn't do clubs but tonight was different. Tonight was a special friends birthday and this is what she wanted for her present so she agreed. Being that this was a club she didn't know what kind of set to do as her songs were normally rock. She could always do covers but she wasn't all that sure what to do. Maybe Paramore or Flyleaf, maybe even Fit for Rivals. This set was three songs conferring with her bandmates she decided on "Misery Buisness" by Paramore, "Damage" by Fit for Rivals, and "Make a Move" by Icon for Hire. Soon the lights dimmed and they were called onto stage. "Here we go guys, show time." As they stepped out onto the stage they were greeted by cheers and signs suggesting that they were well known here.
Stepping up to the microphone she smiled and said, "Hey, so it looks like you guys know us, Wolves Bite Back," she paused as cheers erupted. "So as I was saying we are here to perform for you guys on a special request from my dear friend Jordan for her birthday. Jordan, where are ya raise your hand." she waited until she saw her friend raised her hand. "Come on up here girl, you get to sit with the band!" She said and the crowd parted to let her through. Pulling her up onto the stage she addressed the crowd again. "As we were unsure what music you would want we prepared covers. So hope you all like it." she grinned as the band began 'Misery Buisness' The crowd went wild and then it was time to sing. She felt energy flow through her. This is what she lived for, singing and playing her guitar. "I'm in the business of misery,
Let's take it from the top.
She's got a body like an hourglass, it's ticking like a clock.
It's a matter of time before we all run out,
When I thought he was mine she caught him by the mouth." she started singing letting the music flow through her a smile on her face.

As Gwenny's painting was coming to life she felt something new. Something closer. Alarm. Someone really close by was alarmed. Was it because of her? Was it a night guard? She acted like she didn't notice anything and perhaps once he saw her he'd be okay. Maybe he'd recognize her if they had met before and then just leave her to her own devices. Or maybe he wouldn't notice her and take action and try to take her down or something. She didn't think she'd have it in her to fight back at all even though she had taken some self defense classes. Those were a joke though. Plus would she be considered assaulting an officer or something as well? Stop. She was getting carried away and her painting was turning into a disaster. He'd probably question her first.

As she was calming herself she hadn't heard the man approach. When he spoke she jumped and let out a tiny noise of fright as she dropped her paintbrush. Little bits of paint splattered across the floor. "Dammit..." She grumbled to herself as she quickly picked up the paintbrush and used the sleeve of her shirt to wipe up the paint. She then quickly stood and turned to face the young man. She tried to give him a friendly simile, but knew she probably looked like an awkward monkey trying to smile. "Oh y-yes I know it is. Actually I wor-" She began to stutter out as Uptown Funk began to play loudly in her pocket. This caused her to jump again. "Oh for the love of Tom Cruise you all need to stop making me jump! I'm gonna have a flipping heart attack!" She yelled as she pulled her phone out of her pocket. She didn't recognize the number, but figured it might be the IT guy. "Yes, hello?" She said as she tried to calm herself, hoping her moment of panic didn't get transferred in the slightest to the guy that was standing there.

William stood... A little taken aback at what was going on in front of him... He didnt really know what to do either. There was this girl just, well, ignoring him. She was about to say something but then her phone went off... Atleast she had an alright taste in music though.

William was starting to get irked at the fact that the girl would answer her phone at a time like this, but yet he could only stare at her with an expression that had "Really?" written all over it.

"But hey atleast the music at the night club got better." He thought to himself

As Samuel begins heading in the right direction a girl answers the phone sounding quite annoyed.

"Yes, hello?"

"Uh hi, umm I'm the computer guy on my way to help you guys out. I, uhh, kinda got lost. I'm a few blocks away so its gonna be a while till i get there."

Samuel hoped her mood wasn't directed at him. Last thing he needs is an angry girl breathing down his neck while he worked. He needed peace, especially today.

"Give me twenty minutes, I'll be there. And ill be out just as fast." Samuel hoped this would appease the girl.

Gwenny was slowly getting herself calmed down as the man on the other end began to speak. She could feel the man in the room with her was irked and this made the calming down process more difficult. Every emotion felt different to her and most negative emotions felt like there was a heavy weight pressing down on her. She just tried to breath, however, as she responded to the man on the phone. "Oh that's perfectly fine. I'm in no rush or anything so please just take your time. Just tap on the front door when you get here and I'll let you in." She tried to make her voice sound more calm and happy, knowing she must have sounded rude when she answered. Last thing she needed was to deal with two irritated people. She surely would go into a panic attack then.

She took a deep breath as she turned the sound off and put the phone back in her pocket. Now time to deal with the issue at hand. "I'm sorry about that, it was the IT guy calling to say he was going to be a little late." She started as she decided to use her powers just a little bit and gently pushed a calm mood towards the man. "As I had begun to say, I actually work here. My name's Gwenny. I have some paintings up in here as well." She said as she motioned to a couple art pieces on the wall. "I just came to let the IT guy in and figured while I'm at it I'd paint some too. I don't mean to cause any trouble, please forgive me?" This time she managed to pull of a kind and friendly smile, hoping that she managed to calm the man some and maybe push some happiness in there as well. He seemed so dark and it was a little creepy to her.

As Gwenny began to talk William was taken aback... he felt a sudden calming sensation wash over him as she spoke, he almost got lost in it before he realized she was still talking and pointing to paintings on the wall.

"So your an artist then." He spoke more of a statement then a question. He then looked around at some of the paintings, including the one she was working on. Then shrugged his shoulders.

"Just dont forget to lock the door on your way out." He said as he turned away and began walking before having a sudden and quite foreign to him thought and looked over his shoulder.

"Please." he ended before walking back to his chair, he felt awkward.... He never used that word, in fact, he hated that word.... Please... He remembered screaming it as a child till his throat hurt...

"Please... Such a useless word" He thought bitterly to himself as he walked away...

But why did he feel the need to say it to this woman.... Something bothered William about that. he needed a second away from the so called Gwenny to find out.

When the man told Gwenny to lock up when he left and then seemed to awkwardly say please at the end, the woman couldn't suppress a small giggle. She knew it didn't fit and probably sounded odd, but to her it was a little humorous. The man had no clue that she knew what he was feeling and the fact she got him to say please which in turn made him feel awkward gave Guinevere a sense of joy. She moved back over to her painting and sat down, beginning to paint once again.

As she felt the emotions from next door she felt irritation creep up on her. There it was, the downside to her power. Even though she pushed the calm feeling ever so slightly, she took on some of the man's irritation. Everything around her began to annoy her than, especially her painting she was doing. She began to paint furiously over top of what she'd already done. Then she slammed her paintbrush down loudly. "Why do you all have to feel so much?!" She yelled to no one in particular. When she realized she had said that out loud she shook her head. You need to get a hold of yourself Guinevere. Keep control of your emotions. She thought to herself as she took a deep breath.

William was startled by the sudden outburst the artist girl displayed. he was so deep in thought he didn't even notice the fact that she was starting to get pretty annoyed about something, then the sudden "Why do you all feel so much" knocked him back to reality.

"Are you okay?" William poked his head around the corner again making sure the woman wasn't about to break something in rage.

Samuel finally made it to the gallery. He could hear the end of a live show at the club next door and regretted missing it. He likes a good show now and then. Lightly, he tapped on the door waiting for the lady to let him in. After a few minutes he tried pushing the door, finding it open. He took the liberty of letting himself in. As he wandered through the gallery looking at the paintings he heard a slam like someone was angry.

"Ugh knock knock?" Samuel figured he should speak up in order to not startle anyone.

"The door was open so I just let myself in, hope you don't mind"

As he walked toward the back he found a girl sitting in front of a half finished painting. Sadly it looks like she got frustrated and ruined it. She looked upset so he was wary of aproaching her. She didn't seem to have noticed him so he tapped on a bare piece of wall.At the same time a man turned the corner asking the woman if she was okay.

Guinevere glanced over at the man as he asked if she was okay. She sat silent for a minute, taking a deep breath and forcing herself to calm down. Before she spoke she noticed another man there now. She immediately assumed he was the IT guy, but decided to answer the night guard first. "Yeah sorry, I just got frustrated at something." She tried to offer a reassuring smile as she did so and then turned to the other man.

"You must be the IT guy. I'm totally okay that you let yourself in. Here let me show you where-" She was cut off as she heard a loud crash sound which made her jump. "What the hell was that?!" She asked alarmed as she turned to head for the door. Before she could start moving, however, she felt something she wished to never feel again. The panic and fear of some one dying. This freaked her out and she could actually feel what this person was feeling.

"No! Stop this! She's dying!" She screamed as she grabbed her head. The pain grew worse and worse until Gwenny let out a scream and dropped to her knees, gripping her head tightly. Tears began to stream down her face as she realized whoever had these feeling's had died. She knew too well how death felt, she felt it when her mother died and now she was feeling it again. It didn't stop after the feeling of death past. Now there was fear, tremendous fear. "God please make it stop!" She pleaded with no one in particular and continued to hold her head and let the tears flow as she felt a panic attack coming on.

There was the sound of a large crash outside as the girl began to speak to him. Right before Samuel's eyes this girl began to scream and cry, something about someone dying. Out of reflex he rushed to her and wrapped his arms around her.

"Hey hey hey, whats going on? Are you okay? What was that noise?" Samuel asked trying to grasp the situation.

He looked up at the other man in bewilderment. His face showed almost no emotion, other then determination. His eyes looked like those of a man who had grown accustomed to such things because of a dark past. With fear in his own eyes he asked the man,

"What was that noise? Should we go check it out?"

Samuel was terrified himself, mostly from the girls reaction and wasn't particularly fond of the idea of going out there alone, or even at all. Just more craziness to add to the past few days, just what he needed right now. He began to wonder if some sort of disaster magnet was following him lately.

It had suddenly clicked in Williams mind. After seeing the girl freak out over seemingly nothing he knew... She was like him. That had to be why he felt so at ease with her... He thought. He noticed then the IT guy talking to him

"Should we go check it out?" he asked, visibly panicked at the situation. William only looked at him, then walked past him and towards the conflict, as he did he quickly grasped at the darkness, grabbing it and forming it into a dagger... he felt it then, that primal bloodlust he once felt as a child... He hated it but... At the same time, he loved it. The look of life draining from a persons eyes; it made him laugh almost.

"it's been awhile hasn't it." the thought ran through his head.
"Been quiet some time since i've been able too show myself in YOUR life William" the thought continued.
"Shut up... Your only here to get this done." William silenced the thoughts. Years of control wouldn't be thrown away because of this one stupid night...

as William turned the corner he immediately saw the body laying on the ground along with the people surrounding it and stopped. gripping the shadow dagger tighter he soullessly asked.

"What... The hell... Is going on."

Isaac, lost in thought, is startled after the waitress with the golden eyes had walked up to him and asked him to follow her to his seat. She looked over her shoulder and asked him "I'm assuming you need a table for one"?

"Yes" Isaac replies in an awkward manner, following her to a table.

As he takes his seat and looks up to the waitress, he started to notice something different about the girl, well of course she was already different because of her eye color. But it was more than that, he couldn't tell what it was about her that was different, he just had this feeling. The waitress looked down at him with a smile, and asked "Would you like anything to drink to start you off with?

"Yes I would like"
he is quickly cut off as he started to speak by a loud crash several blocks down the road.

With everyone in the restaurant startled, Isaac immediately gets out his seat and rushes out the door! Thinking someone might have been hurt and, with him being qualified to help, he just acted...

Normally he would never do this, Isaac was never quick to take action this fast, but something was pushing him. Perhaps maybe he was still in that mental state he gets from working in a hospital? Or was it something else? He couldn't really tell.

Sprinting, Isaac sees the club down the street where the crash sound came from. He notices a person standing in the alleyway and hears him say "What the hell is going on?"
Rounding the corner, Isaac sees a group of people surrounding something he couldn't make out. he is however quick to realize it's a person unconscious on the ground and he quickly shoves everyone aside yelling "move I'm a nurse!" And attempts to help.

At first Gwenny didn't even realize the man had come over and wrapped his arms around her. All she knew was that it was comforting. She barely heard the words he spoke, but she tried to answer to the best of her ability. "Someone has died, someone was murdered. I could feel their death. Their pain, their agony and panic. I can feel all of it, it's horrible. And there's now someone else in trouble." She managed to gasp out in between panicked breaths. Come on Gwenny, you need to calm yourself. Ignore everyone else feelings and take deep breaths. You can do this, just focus. She thought to herself as she tried to steady her breathing.

After a few minutes she had managed to calm herself at least a little. That's when she realized that somewhere in all that happened she had gripped onto the man and buried her face into his shoulder. She quickly let go of him and wiped her face. "I am so sorry! I don't even know you and you were kind enough to comfort me and here I go and get tears all over your shirt while looking like a crazy person going on about feelings and people dying and how it hurts. Now I'm rambling and probably look even crazier and this is why I shouldn't be allowed to interact with people." She quickly spoke and then felt embarrassed as she looked down. She could still feel all the emotion outside and almost wondered if they should go out and see what was happening as well.

Samuel patiently waited for the girl to finish her rambling as she cried into his shoulder.

"If you're gonna be okay I'm going to follow that man and see what I can do. Stay here, stay calm and you'll be okay"

Samuel did his best to console the hysterical girl by sounding confident himself. In truth he was probably just as panicked as anyone would be but he needed to stay strong. Samuel rose to his feet, glanced over at the crying girl one more time then followed or the back. By the time he had gotten there a crowd had already begun to form. He saw the other man standing in the doorway, something in his hand. He approached the man, placed his hand in his shoulder saying,

"What's going on? Did you see who did this? "

William just stood and watched as the two mysterious figures shuffled off into the crowd. he lessened his grip on the shadow in his hand and felt it quietly disperse into nothing as a hand was placed on his shoulder, reflexively he shrugged the hand off and looked at the man.

"Whats going on? Did you see who did this?" The IT worker asked.

"I don't know, and I don't care." he he said unemotionally.

He shot a glance at the self proclaimed nurse attempting to help the dead girl before silently turning and walking back into the gallery.

Upon entering he noticed the artist... Gwenny, and had something that he needed to get off his chest.

"What did you do too me." He asked bluntly. truthfully not caring about the fact that she still had tears forming in her eyes.

"Tears... nobody cares about tears... Mother never cared about tears.... Father never cared about tears." The thoughts began to speak again.

"Your annoying." William shut down the thoughts again. appearing physically irked at the them.

Gwenny watched as the man left, knowing he was panicked. He put on a good face though, so she didn't say anything about it. Once he was gone, however, she finally managed to force herself to calm down. "Like hell I'm going to stay in here." She said to herself as she stood up. She wiped her face, though she knew she couldn't keep her eyes from being red, and she went outside.

Before she could move, however, the dark man came back in. He seemed annoyed which didn't seem to shock Gwenny at all. She could tell he was an unhappy person with something else she couldn't place, something dark and.....crazy. When he asked her what she had done to him so bluntly she immediately became agitated and she wasn't sure why. Maybe it was a leftover feeling from all the emotions she just felt. "What did I DO to you?! I did nothing but calm you my dear. Wasn't it nice? Calm is supposed to be nice. Here feel some happiness too why don't you. That's a nice feeling as well!" She said as she pressed a happy mood towards him, but only for a moment and then she released him from it. She soon regretted it, however, as she felt a migraine come on. One of her hands went to her temples as she closed her eyes and rubbed it. "Oh why do you all have to have so many different and conflicting emotions? I always have to feel them, always have to keep them in check in order to keep myself from going completely bonkers. It's not easy you know." She said, not realizing she had just said it all out loud and the man could hear it all.

William stood quite dumbfounded... for a few seconds not a single thought ran through his head but... He was... Happy... then he didn't know what to feel. He was confused, agitated, sad, hungry, just all around jumbled.

"You..." was all he let out for a second, still giving her an quizzical look.

"Feel them." He finally finished his thought.

"how did you calm me.." He asked now in more of an agitated tone. Coming back to the fact his question wasn't answered.

"I don't FEEL calm. I don't FEEL anything, Feelings are for the weak!" He spoke, his voice getting more and more dark.

"And you feel everyone's emotions don't you!? That makes you weak! Weak ones DIE!" he cynically growled

It was then he stopped almost amazed at himself... He ran his fingers through his hair and took a deep breath..

"That... Hasn't happened in awhile." He admitted out loud. He noticed Gwenny had a hand pressed to her temples and walked to his corner, grabbing his bag he pulled out some Ibuprofen... He knew the pain of migraines all to well...

"Here... It's Ibuprofen, strongest I can get over the counter... I get migraines frequently too." He said holding out his hand too her. He was never this nice... And it wasn't that he felt bad either he just...

Nobody should have to put up with what he just allowed to happen.
