He is a wise but that is usually masked by his sarcastic attitude. He is lovable but isn't very patient with young headstrong people.

History
Gears past is very hazy and he rarely mentions his real name. He is an expert with repair work and can build/fix almost anything. He carries a picture of his wife and child, both who died long ago, leaving him with only Axel to keep him company. After his home was destroyed by raiders, he decided to search for a new place to settle down.
[EDIT] - Gears is actually Commander Theodore Drakov, a Russian solider that defected after the death of his wife and son. His brother, Yuri, is head of the Russian Colony the people of Feran travel to after their home is destroyed.
