The Essence of Mok Gar
Mok Gar practitioners can accomplish “five moves in one second”. Its founding principals are: three heights and eight
directions, long and short attacks, its signature flexible stepping and simultaneous offensive and defensive legwork. This is what
makes Mok Gar one of the most effective and complete styles of Gung Fu. Unlike some other styles, Mok Gar has been
faithfully passed from generation to generation without modification.

Mok Gar is most famous for delivering first class powerful kicking techniques; However, its' practitioners are in no way
restricted to kicking alone, Mok Gar also places emphasis on short-hand techniques and a full range of weaponry. Mok Gar is
also known for its sophisticated, constantly changing, highly elusive footwork, powerful fists, flexible stepping, and long and
short attacks. It uses continuous united offense and defense and high stances for both footwork and hand techniques. Mok Gar’
s animal emphasis, is the Snake.

Training in Mok Gar
Training in Mok Gar concentrates on building a tremendous amount of stamina as well as development of power and flexibility
in the legs. Students would traditionally learn one posture at a time, until all three heights and eight directions were mastered;
only then, would the next posture be taught. Techniques to withstand punches and kicks are also taught to students of this
style. Mok Gar has 45 postures and is approximately 70% legs and 30% hands. Weight training, iron rings, and stone locks are
used for the development of strength, stamina, and speed. The Mok-Gar style by tradition has two wooden dummies for
practice. One called Mook-Yan-Chon which has projections like arms and is used for blocking and countering. The second is
called Darn-Gee which consists of a hollow bamboo post 13 feet high and 4 inches diameter, which is set into the ground by
about 3 feet, it’s filled with washers (originally coins) and is used to practice all of the attacks a student has to learn. The
training is a terrific aid to building power into punches and kicks. Every student passes through a stage where he or she must
develop a considerable amount of power before progressing with his or her training. There are 108 movements, which form the
basis of Mok-Gar style.

Mok Gar has nine fists (Double punches, Rolling punch, Snap punch, Uppercut, Flower fist, Back fist, Reverse punch, Casting
fist, and Splitting fist), six palms (Right palm, Left palm, Double Palm, Left palm block, Right palm block); five elbows
(Double elbow strike), eleven kicks (Guo Men Jiao: Pass the Gate Kick; Zhi Jie Ce Jiao: Direct Side Kick; She Jiao: Absorbing
Kick; Pao Jiao: Hurling Kick lightning legs, Front kick. Turning kick, Back kick, Spinning kick, Sickle kick, Knee strike, Round
kick, and Heel kick, Right hook sickle kick, and side body kick); six stances (Mu Ren Chan: Wooden Man Stance; Pian Shen
Ma: Deflecting Stance; Horse stance, Bow and arrow stance); and eight stepping patterns. Blocks include: Upper block, Middle
block, Lower block, and Kick blocks. Legwork and footwork: The legs are used for attacking, blocking, blocking, trapping, and
breaking. With its flexible footwork, long and short attacks, and offense and defense is one motion; Flexible waist, Rooted
stances, Weight distribution. The resulting flexibility of attack & defense epitomizes the original concept of Chinese Martial
Arts.

Mok Gar Forms include: First set (Yeu goon lin za) which teaches basic hand patterns and stances and develops whipping
power and spiraling motions; Second set (Lian Tui Quan - Practice Leg Form) which teaches kicks and develops “the seven
sides of the foot”; Third set which teaches balance, rooting, and power development from the waist; Forth set which teach
joining hands and feet, and develops flexible stepping methods and hand work (the Tight Hand Method); and The advanced
form which uses 108 kicking combinations using the seven sides of the foot, lower and upper knee and leg locks, elbow and
shoulder strikes, short range palm and fist work, and develops jumps and sweeps. It also includes Lau Gar Kuen a "borrowed"
form from the Lau Family style.
