The pirate ship rose and fell, as it sailed along the Italian coast in the calm sea. Asu, a chain shackle around his feet, was carefully counting the ship's monetary supplies. He did not want to make any mistakes. Even though the Captain spoke little Aramaic and Asu refused to speak Latin, Captain Tacitus had made it clear that there were to be no mistakes- or else.
And so Asu carefully counted out each share, separating them into piles. On hundred-fifty shares for the captain and the ship. One share for the regular crew members. Twenty shares for the helmsman, and so on. Asu hated being a slave-he hated being told what to do. Ever since that terrible day in his village back in Syria, he had tried to stir up mutiny among the other slaves, but they wouldn't listen to him, or they couldn't understand him. It was not just Syrians aboard the ship. Carthaginians, Egyptians, Numidians, and Greeks were all aboard this ship. The people from his village regarded him as a fool. So here he sat, waiting as the ship neared Ostia Antica, were the captain said he would sold for a profit.
Sighing, Asu went back to work, quick fingers quietly counting the coins. As he finished, sailors outside were pulling in the sails and mounting the oars, maneuvering the ship into the docks. The door burst open, as two burly men and Tacitus himself entered the small room. Grinning, Tacitus motioned for the two pirates to gran Asu.

"Well, well, well. You have done well, my little Syrian boy. I would keep you, but I think selling you would be better for purse. But you have done well. I will observe your progress with interest. Titus, Julius, take him out." the captain said in Latin.

Outside, all the slaves were being lined up, as plaques were placed around there necks. Well-armed sailors were everywhere, watching for any troublemakers. A plaque, describing Asu's abilities and appearance was placed around his neck, and the slave were led down the gangplank towards the market square. If Asu was lucky, he would not be bought today- they were more well-guarded than he thought, and he no way of escaping.
