Nanako was born on the 18th of January, in the depth of winter and since then has a great love for the cold season. She loves the snow and peacefulness which it brings along as soon as the first few snow flakes start falling. Her family was quite the ordinary one, no big drama or tragedy happened, at least till her parents death. Before, though, they could be considered the average little family. With a father working as a lawyer, being quite strict, but loving nonetheless and mother working as a teacher with young children. Nanako was a very open-minded child with a good-natured spirit, but after her parents died, she turned very reclusive and quiet. Now she tends to express herself through her music and drawings.

Nanako's parents, Yumi and Haruka Ukame, died in a car crash when she was twelve years old. Since then, Nanako lived with her grandmother Kyoko in a small old cottage close by the school. She is an only child, so sometimes gets a bit lonely with only her grandmother as company, but the two of them make the best of it and Nanako cares for her grandma a lot. She has an uncle, her mother's older brother, Ichiro, but he lives in a different town and doesn't visit very often.
When her parents died in the accident, Nanako fell into a depression, not speaking with anyone for weeks and only the comfort of her violin, which was a present from her parents, could carry her through the pain.
