There was nothing special about Jostica, with the exception of her unusual, and intentionally misspelled, name until she was eight.
Her father died in car crash and soon after she turned nine, her mother remarried a man named Alexander Rose. The transition was initially difficult, but was made easier by Rose’s son, who was several years older. Despite his rarely being around, Jostica took to her new step-brother like a duck to water.
They became very close, so close, even, that she considered him her best friend and took his last name. Soon after he graduated High School however, he left home, not saying much more than, “Goodbye.”
The family was devastated and though it was never openly discussed, and not even mentioned around her, before or after his departure, it was the common conclusion that he left because he was a mutant.
Jostica eventually managed to drag the reason out of his girlfriend, who was the only one he kept in regular contact with; he had left to protect them.
Jostica decided at that time that if he left because he wanted to protect them, then she would learn to protect herself and then drag him home. By the hair if necessary.
She threw herself into the study of the magical arts, and after getting into some serious trouble while meditating on the astral plane, she met a powerful sorcerer who agreed to teach her, at least enough to protect herself.
By the time she was eighteen, he decided that she knew enough to be able to protect herself on her quest, told her that he’d check up on her every couple of months, and, giving her a Rune Cloak and a Staff of Elements, wished her luck.
She waited until she’d graduated high school and then left in search of her brother.
