Introduction

In, Nome Alaska, during times of dog sleds was the only way to get thing to other place, It was also dangerous because of the wolves that lurked in the woods waiting for anything to kill in an instance, there was so groups of them that always fought for territory, or even just death. The first pack was always pure white wolves, known as, Light, they was always able to track any live creature miles away, and kill them. The the second pack, was only black or very dark colored wolves, known as, Shadow Wolves, they killed anything insight not worrying what it may be. These two packs hated each other deeply and if crossed they would have the need to fight each other to the death. But soon after mates on each side became harder to find and they began to mate with their enemies, the alpha's hated this and killed or kicked out the 'half-breeds', The surviving new breeds, was soon considered, Outsiders. Some old Outsiders moved more to civilization, and mated with Husky, making wolf hybrids that was hated by most humans.

The mountains... cold, foreboding in nature, but luckily for my pack, freshly inhabited by the Musk Ox. I along with five of my brothers managed to overwhelm a large cow and down her before she could alert the herd. We had tracked this herd for a least a few minutes in human time without much trouble save the winter winds threatening to throw us off of the scent.

The elders of our tribe would obviously have a tough time making their way through the rocky terrain. I was glad they sent me as the leader for this hunt, for as great as hunters my brothers were, I was the one with the more clear head, and they all knew and respected that. Despite being the one leading this pack, I never took more than I needed, giving my brothers a fair share of the kill. Despite having to reprimand the more inexperienced pups of the tribe, we would have more than enough for everyone back home.

The elders of my tribe managed to find a decent shelter with more than enough space for the lot of us, allowing us shelter from the harsh winds, thought they would never admit that part out loud. It was a clearing in the middle of the groups of trees with two separate creeks of running water. Our dens were mostly in various cluster of deep brush, our elders given the hollowed out tree trunks and other various lodging the forest of the mountains provided.

We were greeted by a midday gathering of my tribe as the came together to take part in our kill.

I however decided to allow my family eat their fill in peace as I went to the edge of the clearing to be by myself for a while, curling up into a ball, tucking my tail around me, and close my eyes for a short nap.

I was walking around chasing whatever caught my eyes at the point, When I smelled something near the clearing. I start to walk silently to the source of the smell to see it was a male wolf. I watched carefully amazed by his color fur as he laid down and closed his eyes. "Wow his fur looks so pretty" I said to myself as I looked myself over in the near by lake "I wish mine was that color, it would be so cool" I start to jump around playfully forgetting about the wolf that lied sleeping close to where I was.

My nose twitched while talking a soft breath, making my eyes shoot open. This scent was of another wolf. Yet... it was female. Thinking it was one of the pack's female pups who wandered out of the clearing, Akecheta rose to his feet walking out of the clearing to follow the scent.

It wasn't long until he'd finally found the source of the scent. It was in fact female, but the wolf pouncing about playfully was one of white colored fur.

"A Light Wolf... I can't let anyone else know she's here... they'd kill her." he thought to himself.

Making sure no one had seen him leave, Akecheta moved a little further from the clearing so he could actually speak without anyone hearing.

"Female, you are in Shadow Wolf territory. Are you of the Light Clan?" He asked calmly, his voice a deep smooth tone.

I looked at his cautiously and bow politely "No, I am not, I am a Outside" I said keeping my head low to the ground trying not to offend the wolf in any way "I'm sorry, I didn't know, I was chasing a rabbit" I said looking you in the eyes "I would leave if I could but I can't"

"An outsider..." he repeated.

Walking slowly up to the female wolf, he decided it right to at least introduce himself. His fur shifted with his movements along with the small wind moving through the trees.

"I am Akecheta of the Shadow Wolf Clan." He said as he sat down in front of her, "Who are you, and, if you won't mind my asking, why can you not leave?"

"Pleasure to meet you, I'm Snowstorm, but people who know me call me Snow" I say sitting down across from you and wagging my tail "And I can't go anywhere else is because, no one wants a Hybrid, in a clan or anywhere near it, and the woods are taken by both clans so I don't really have that much room, plus humans won't me in civilization with them, so the chase me out here" I finished as my tail stop wagging around everywhere.

"I see..." He replied, "Well, unlike my clan, I am not as quick to judge, nor chase out."

Akecheta looked down at Snowstorm, due to his height difference, and nodded.

"How long has it been since you've eaten?" He asked.

"Three days. Why?" She ask looking up at him "If your planning on giving me food I won't take it" I said starting to act slightly childish "I can hunt for food...I just haven't mastered it that much" I started to get a little embarrassed that I didn't know how to hunt that well.

"If you don't want my food, I can at least give you some aid in hunting." He replied

Sensing this was egging on the fact she may have though him to think her unable to provide for herself, so to make his point clear, he decided to elaborate.

"Besides, I know of a herd not far from here." He continued, "And I'd rather an outsider who only seeks food be unharmed by either side."

"Okay I'll go with you to where ever this herd is, after you answer this for me. Why are you helping a Female wolf, especially and mutt?" I asked standing up and walking over to the river and taking a drink of water as I waited for your answer

"One; because, unlike my family, I don't believe it's right to hate anyone upfront," He replied simply, "and two, do I need a reason to help a possible friend in need?"

He quickly shut his mouth, fearing he'd said too much, not so much out of being upfront, but out pf embarrassment for he was never quite this talkative around the male wolves of his pack. He'd never admit that, at least out loud at the moment.

"Okay then, lets go then, of great master" I said with a bit of sarcasm in my voice as I run around you in a circle "So what kind of herd is it anyways deer or something" I finally calm down "Don't you need your clan to help you hunt them down if, it's a very big herd?" I asked getting a little worried about it.

Standing to his feet, slowly started up a mountain trail heading opposite from where he had been standing, his fur shifting and his paws making soft crinkles from the grassy and leaf filled forest floor. His scar shifted with the upper skin of his left eye as he blinked before turning his head to Snowstorm.

"I've been through enough hunts to be able to handle herds on my own, but it does help to have another with me." He replied. So first, tell me, what do you know of hunting?

"I only know how to stay quiet and low to the ground, and that you have to be very quick" I said wagging my tail "I don't know anything else about hunting, but I'm pretty sure you can teach me all that can't you?"

"Well, I can teach you that, and more, Snowstorm." He said.

Backtracking the herd of Musk Ox, Akacheta was relieved to see the herd hadn't moved. He and Snowstorm laid low to the ground as they remained hidden among the grove of rocks and snow covered brush. From there to the herd was about thirty feet, just enough for him to explain the proper techniques.

"Okay," he said softly, "This herd is somewhat tightly packed, so what we want to do is wait for the right moment. And that moment will be when one is stupid enough to move from it. We must be patient until that moment."

Akecheta then told Snowstorm how he and his herd waited until a cow of the herd made it's way to the mountain stream nearby, allowing him and his brothers to down it before it made any noise.

"Wow, so how long does it usually take before one leaves the herd to go somewhere else" I ask keeping my eyes on the herd of Ox. After awhile I took my eyes off of the herd and looked at Akecheta "Umm...Akecheta, How did you get that wound on your eye if you don't mind if I ask" I look at you my ears staying low to my head trying to be unnoticed to the herd that we was waiting on.

"It could be a while, that's when they key is patience." He answered.

When Snowstorm asked him about his scar, he momentarily took his eyes off of the herd, glancing at her before he returned his eyes to the Oxen.

"I was looking for food, scouting on my own." He explained, "I happened to find a small camp where a Huskey and it's master were camping out. They had been fortunate in hunting and I was going to ask if I could take some back with me. I was a young pup back then. It started yelling at me, saying my kind killed it's parents."

He could almost hear her voice as he told the story.

"You don't understand, I have young ones in my clan to feed!" Akecheta tried to reason.

"NO!" the young female shouted, "IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO DONE IT, THEY WERE WOLVES! YOU'RE NO DIFFERENT!"

They female's yelling to humans was the equivalent to barking, raising it's owner to rush to it's aid. Despite his efforts to appear harmless, the human lashed out at Akecheta with a knife, cutting the skin of the upper lid of his left eye.

Returning to the present, he continued to speak.

"Ever since then, my scar has been a reminder that even when you don't mean harm, the simple appearance of ill intent can result in the other fearing you."

"I'm sorry to hear that" I said as I lowered my head "My mom used to come out into the woods when her and her human would come hunting, when the human saw my dad and me with my mom he killed my father and I ran off after that my mom stopped coming around" I started to let out a soft whimper "So I stayed out here both my parents kept me a secret from their homes" I turn my attention back on the oxen to see one was straying away from the herd "Hey look, one's leaving the herd" I whispered.

Akecheta began to give her consultation, but her second statement made his eyes dart to the Ox moving away from the herd.

"Okay, now when we follow, move when I say move."

Right after speaking, Akecheta sprang from his hiding place and dove behind a rock. He knew his movement may have been noticed. So, taking very slow movements, he peeked out from behind the rock.

Sure enough, he noticed of the Oxen looking his direction. It was half a minute before it returned to the grassy bit it stood on. He knew the color of her fur would allow her to move more easily in contrast to his dark fur.

"Now... crawl to me slowly." he said softly.

I took a deep breath and crawled slowly keeping my body low to the ground as I got to the rock "This is fun" I said looking over the rock quietly and wagging my tail softly from side to side as I kept my eyes on the Oxen "I wish I learned this sooner, I might have been able to catch things bigger things then a rabbit" I kept low to the ground afraid that the Oxen might see me.

"Good." He said softly, moving to the other side of the rock.

The Ox had moved behind a wall of rocks, out of sight from the herd. It had began taking a drink... sitting on all fours. A cow... that had to be it.

"Okay. Now, when I run at it, I'm going to latch onto it's throat. You are going to latch onto the space on my left." He instructed, "Understood?"

Watching for the right moment Akecheta watched the Oxen. It wasn't until the Ox turned it's head away from their hiding place. Then...

WOOSH!

His paws seemed to float over the rocks that covered the ground as he ran in full sprint. His eyes locked onto his target, the cow's throat. The cow's ears twitched as it's head began jerking towards the sound of the animal approaching it. However, before it even caught the color of black fur out of the corner of it's eye, it felt the sting of gigantic canine teeth inside of it's neck. But not only it's neck... it's vocal chords. This would have been the time for her to make her move, but with his mouth occupied, it would all rest on her.
