What is World of Darkness?
We can’t know when humans first started telling stories, or why. But it’s a safe bet that the first tale tellers used their craft to explain the mysteries going on around them. Indeed, some of the most ancient stories that are still told today grapple
The stories told in this game are set in the World of Darkness. It’s a place very much like our world, sharing the same history, culture and geography. Superficially, most people in this fictional world live the same lives we do. They eat the same food, wear the same clothes, and waste time watching the same stupid TV shows. And yet, in the World of Darkness, shadows are deeper, nights are darker, fog is thicker. If, in our world, a neighborhood has a rundown house that gives people the creeps, in the World of Darkness, that house emits strange sighs on certain nights of the year, and seems to have a human face when seen from the corner of one’s eye. Or so some neighbors say. In our world, there are urban legends. In the World of Darkness, there are urban legends whispered into the ears of autistic children by invisible spiders.
Setting
The Gothic aspect describes the ambience of the World of Darkness. Buttressed buildings loom overhead, bedecked with classical columns and grimacing gargoyles. Residents are dwarfed by the sheer scale of architecture, lost amid the spires that seem to grope toward Heaven in an effort to escape the physical world. The ranks of the Church swell, as mortals flock to any banner that offers them a hope of something better in the hereafter. Likewise, cults flourish in the underground, promising power and redemption. The institutions that control society are even more staid and conservative than they are in our world, for many in power prefer the evil of the world they know to the chaos engendered by change. It is a divisive world of have and have not, rich and poor, excess and squalor.
The Punk aspect is the lifestyle that many denizens of the World of Darkness have adopted. In order to give their lives meaning, they rebel, crashing themselves against the crags of power. Gangs prowl the streets and organized crime breeds in the underworld, reactions to the pointlessness of living “by the book.” Music is louder, faster, more violent or hypnotically
Gothic-Punk is a mood and setting conveyed during the course of the game. The greatest share of creating this ambience falls upon the Storyteller, but players should consider their characters’ stake in it as well. The ambience is also a matter of taste. Some troupes may prefer more Gothic than Punk, while others may want equal amounts of both elements, or little of either. In the end, it’s your game, and you are free to make of it what you will. Simply bear in mind that experiencing the world is a shared endeavor, and everything the players and Storyteller do helps make that world more believable. Actions, settings, characters and descriptions all convey the Gothic-Punk aesthetic.
Plot
A Hunter's life is fraught with danger. The "bliss of ignorance" has been taken from them and the existence of supernatural manipulation of humanity cannot be ignored. However, the Hunter cannot simply reveal this knowledge to mundane authorities since they will be branded as unstable and insane. So in the darkness, behind the scenes, they work to protect mankind.
Hunters wage a desperate, clandestine war against the inhuman, ageless forces that manipulate mankind. They see their task as taking back the night from bloodsuckers, ravaging beasts, vengeful spirits and manipulative sorcerers. They must face mankind's worst fears made real in the most deadly game of the Hunt in order to fulfill the task they have set before them: to "Inherit the Earth".
But, there is a plot brewing, and if The Orchestrator's have their way, souls will be stolen, barriers will be broken, and the rules will be rewritten. Their actions will cost humanity dearly. Never before have there been so many attacks, reports of weird sightings and events, happen worldwide. The Gates have been thrown open and demons and other creatures can now gain entry en masse, humans will be helpless as lambs before lions. Will the Hunters and Defenders find out before it’s too late? More importantly, will they fight... or stand by idly?
Hunters
Our hunters are really new to the World of Darkness, causing them to be unorganized and uninformed. Players will form a team of mismatched protagonists arguing on how to attack or deal with monsters. They will try to keep a semblance of normal life, giving the player the opportunity to explore the troubles of living a double life. They will also have to try to figure out what being a monster really means and what being human is, as they meet humans worse than monsters and genuinely kind monsters.
The roleplay will be best played by using characters new to the World of Darkness as metagaming can interfere greatly in the experience. For example, the Imbued might think all supernatural creatures are on the same team, which is false in World of Darkness. Of course, a player can simulate ignorance or the storyteller (the game master) can alter as many details to create a new personal World of Darkness for the players.
Note that there have been groups of "hunters" prior to the Imbued that exist as antagonists or allied groups. These groups however are very different from the Imbued. These "mortal hunters" were either normal people trying to fight against the monsters, ancient orders that have protected humanity for centuries, or government agencies that were equivalent to the X-Files with high-tech monster hunting gear.
Roleplay Style
The game will involve at least two, although preferably four or more players. Everybody involved in the game participates in telling a group story — the players create and act out the roles of their characters, and the Storyteller creates and reveals the plot, introducing allies and antagonists with which the players’ characters interact. The players’ choices throughout the course of the Storytelling experience alter the plot. The Storyteller’s job isn’t to defend his story from any attempt to change it, but to help create the story as events unfold, reacting to the players’ choices and weaving them into a greater whole, introducing secondary characters and exotic settings.
About
Characters in this game will be three dimensional and have a level of realism to them. Though all of them will be hunters of the supernatural and some of them supernatural beings themselves, they will still possess ordinary aspects obtained from their normal life and try to hold on to their humanity; some will even attempt to live two lives. Character collaboration will be important, but not necessary. People don't always come together and mesh. Sometimes, most times, they clash due to their different personalities. There are families that can't work and/or live together, so it makes sense that these men and women from different walks of life, won't want to team-up and be friends. This is why staying solo will be a plausible route. However, fate, which is controlled by the Storyteller, will continuously merge paths through happenstances that occur in the story.
Setting will not be restricted to one location, or one dimension for that matter. Evil is everywhere, so location will be wherever the story takes us. Additionally, date is likely to change as well. Its highly possible that time skips could consist of any chronological combination, from 10 minutes to 10 years. Needless to say, progression will be an active factor in this game. Characters that smoke may develop cancer or after raiding a vampire lair, they could contract vampirism. It won't all be bad though, there are positive effects of progression and change, like acquiring new gear and skills. In short, the game will be ever evolving, the only constant will be the World of Darkness.
Character Creation
While I do prefer pictures in the app, do try to make them a manageable size, but text descriptions are welcome as well. I also appreciate good use of coding because it makes for an easier read, plus it looks nice. This is why I advise everyone to use the application I provide, it brings organization to the sheet as well list all the info I request. I have said this before and I will say it again: be creative. There are too many options available for characters to be similar.
Using the provided character application is a must, substituting your own or adding unnecessary categories is not acceptable. What you can do is customize the sheet with your own coding, fonts, colors, pictures, and your characters information, obviously. I realize the sheet is long, so I've made two different versions: extended and condensed. Both are still pretty lengthy, but the condensed has less areas to fill out and doesn't require in-depth descriptions, as a paragraph will suffice as detailed information. The extended is the opposite, I will expect exemplary and expansive writing, of which will not go unnoticed or unrewarded. So, the choice is yours.
On the subject of character balance:
Think of your character as a six sided die. If we use a typical human as the average norm, their stats would fall into line as 3’s across the board, with a 1 & 2 = Below Average, 4’s = Above Average (but nothing spectacular), and 5 & 6 = Well Above Average & Really Good.
So where does exceptional or perfect fit in?
Well this takes us well past typical human greatness and the exponentially harder to achieve 7 & 8 = Exceptional; 9 = Near Perfect; 10 = Perfect.
How do you get there?
Natural talent, training, and heritage. For instance, if you are studying a single subject and trying to become exceptional in it, you will probably falter in another area after devoting so much time and resources to the former. You are also more likely to be skilled in this subject if your ancestors were. Now, unless your character is a God or some other extraordinary race or species, one should consider a more mediocre approach to character creation. The upper levels are just that, the exception to the rule.
Example 1: Telepathy: The ability to hear thoughts.
Tier 1: Read Thoughts, Communicate Mentally
Tier 2: Project Thoughts, Memory Search
Tier 3: Mind Trap, Project Illusions
Tier 4: Mind Control, Dream Dive/Control/Create
Tier 5: Improved Abilities-wider range-tap more minds at once, Add Mental BlocksExample 2: Pyrokinesis/Flame Control: The ability to create and control fire with the mind.
Tier 1: Fire Streams, Flame Projectiles, Flame Manipulation/Creation
Tier 2: Producing flames from other areas, Increased precision and temperature, Area Techniques
Tier 3: Power Increase, Channeling/Absorption, Flame Wall
Tier 4: Control/Manipulation of other Branches of Fire: Steam, Spontaneous Combustion, Explosions, Heat
Tier 5: Produce Secondary Element of Fire: Lightning, Grander Techniques: Ocean of Flames
If you have trouble or just don't want to write a personality description for your character, this is fine. But if that is the case, I would like you to copy/paste the information about your character's: demeanor, nature, alignment, virtue, and creed. Regurgitated information is better than no information at all. This is something I actually prefer since it would prevent me from having to go back to the reference threads, plus the information paints a pretty vivid picture of who your character is.
Despite this, they are the same in nature, but may appear in another way or discern information differently. Because they are similar, I will allow players to use either version. This can be done by swapping an edge out with the same one of the same level for that specific creed and virtue or purchasing them. This notification is only relevant to players with Imbued character. If you have any questions, PM me.
- Recommendation: Not just players with Imbued characters, but I would advise everyone read a Hunter the Reckoning: Creed Book. They are useful reference guides for your character's creed and give you insight on the World of Darkness which can help get you in the right mindset and be inspirational for developing your character. Finding the online PDF versions is one of the easiest ways to do this, unless you can get the actual books, which is much better.
