In the fantasy world of Arlos, there exist two kinds of demons.

The Unconscious
and
The Aware.

Aware demons are capable of conscious thought. They have personalities, likes, dislikes. They can speak. They can think. They are extremely intelligent and can live to thousands of years old. These demons rarely keep lifelong partners because their personalities change so much after millenniums that they often become incompatible with their partners. They can cast spells and usually have unique appearances, such as horns, scales, wings, strange eyes or hair, tails, claws, and all kinds of appearances. Some can shapeshift. Some drink blood. There are many breeds. But they are all generally humanoid.

The unconscious demons are not.

Unconscious demons have succumbed to the immense amount of magic inside them. They are insane. They are incapable of thought. Their personalities disintegrate. They are nothing more than balls of fury and bloodlust, lashing out and killing everything around them. Their power is enormous because they are no longer capable of restraint or holding it in check; however, they are extremely stupid, incapable of coming up with plans.

Every demon begins aware, but some end up unconscious through a myriad of reasons. Torture. Trauma. Disease. Insanity. Something that makes them collapse, crumble. Sometimes demons that live for thousands of years and don't end their own lives soon enough collapse and turn unconscious because of the sheer amount of years they have lived. But either way, for every demon, "crumbling", as it is called, is a frightening, very real concept. Usually, before you crumble, there are episodes, breakdowns. Perhaps you hurt yourself or people you love. What do you do when you are afraid that you are crumbling?

You attend the Academy of Shamans.



The mentors at this academy are of the highest caliber. They have the highest self-restraint in the world. And they specialize in keeping you, young demon, from crumbling.

It is not a very safe place, of course. All of the students are somewhat insane, usually very afraid of going feral. In fact, the academy can be downright cruel to maintain safety. The mentors will do what they have to do.



But the Florence Nightingale effect begins to take place.
