Introduction
The City of Nox
July of 2017, a vicious plague ravaged the country. The sick poured into hospitals, severely deformed and mentally unstable. Many begged for death. Others took matters in their own hands. As their bodiesβ circadian rhythms became distorted, leaving them restless at night, and their veins grew with a strange luminescent glow, those that remained became more accustomed to the night. Their eyes mutated as their photopic vision degraded until nearly all color became indistinguishable. Their scotopic vision, however, developed rapidly to compensate and advanced their ability to see under low light. Their corneas enlarged, leaving little white to their eyes and a thick protective film developed over them. A few of the victims can blink with this strange white film independently like ravens. It also gives them the ability to detect motion in the dark.
~
Doctors puzzled over this illness but found no answer. They could only detect a sudden introduction of luciferin into the victimβs bloodstream. As the luciferin interacted with a humanβs naturally occurring adenosine triphosphate, it began to glow and become visible in the victimβs translucent skin. Sometimes it can appear all over the body, usually in babies or young children, but often it is apparent in the most exposed parts of the body such as the extremities. It is clear that the victims are producing it themselves but none can say why or how.
~
With no apparent cause and no way to predict how it transfers, the victims that remained were moved to facilities for their own benefit. Many facilities worldwide that had long been abandoned opened up for treatment. Old insane asylums of ivy covered brick and dilapidated hospitals with fallen windows were all renewed with patients.
~
Then a doctor, stricken with the disease himself, discovered a gene mutation. For better or worse, Dr. Nox changed the face of the illness forever. The illness was no longer feared as a plague but became viewed as a deformity. Lack of interest coupled with disgust lead to a great unleashing of the victims onto the public. They were told to forget their new abilities, their new weaknesses, and adjust. There were rehabilitation centers in place of treatment centers. When the victims could not adapt, they were ridiculed. Critics claimed they were βlooking for attentionβ or βspecial treatmentβ. They quickly became second class citizens.
~
Dr. Nox tried to help what he believed to be his new βkindβ. With investors, he set up a small corner of town tailored to the stricken. He believed he could better their lives and make it easier to adjust. Many victims were given a new lease on life. They could work at night and cater to others with their condition. They were given homes with low lights and protection from the coarse light of day. With the success of his little neighborhood, he sought the same treatment for victims everywhere. He became a great advocate and came to believe that what happened to them was not an illness, but another stage of evolution. They came to be known as Nocturnals, instead of victims.
~
But there was great fear and ignorance in the guise of concern. They feared they would be taken over. They feared they would become marginalized. They feared the Nocturnals would turn on their own oppressors. They tried to suppress Nocturnals who intended on making their own areas in cities and towns all over the country. But it would prove to be impossible. Nocturnals still had families and supporters on the other side whom they began to call Diurnals. Dr. Nox, himself, was charismatic and idealistic. So the opposition developed a new plan. One night, as the doctor returned home at dawn, he was killed in the streets of his own neighborhood. No one saw the person who did it. Nocturnals had a massive funeral for their leader but with him gone, they had lost the battle for their freedom. To βprotectβ the Nocturnals, the opposition agreed to pushing the victims into their own neighborhoods. They were barred inside with great fences and gates. A curfew was instituted and their rights were stripped one by one. Nocturnals could not vote. Nocturnals could not run for a government position. Nocturnals could not own property. Nocturnals could live no where else but their assigned neighborhoods. Families were split up. Friends were moved apart.
~
The motto of the these Diurnals became, βItβs us or them,β And despite efforts from dayside supporters to include the victims, to rescue them from their plight, little has been done. To this day, those stricken with the illness are separated, neglected, and abandoned. But all are not hopeless. They bear the name of the doctor in their hearts and whisper it on their lips. They carry his vision for a better life and no longer view themselves as victims or even Nocturnals but sons and daughters of Dr. Nox. And someday, he will be avenged.

Your character's background and relationships are up to you, but please include whether they are nocturnal or diurnal, as well as whether they live inside or outside the city limits. Bare in mind that there is little travel between the outside and city worlds so interaction will have to be creative.

Setting
0.00 INK
He crumpled the paper in his hands. Sully was uninterested in making friends. They would sleep on the floor and leave him alone. He didn't need some newbie underfoot plaguing him with questions about his affliction. Why do our veins glow? Why am I so tired during the day? Does this mean I'm a vampire? He rolled his eyes. There had been a number of new people who came through and all behaved like small children with their incessant questions. Many of them calmed down and adapted. A few could not. Their graves were in stacked urns in a converted alleyway. There was no use getting close.
The setting changes from The Bradbury Apartments to Real world, in the future
Her father had fought for years against the formation of the city, behind closed doors and within reams of legal paperwork. In the public eye he was a senator and had to project a measured approach, one which implied he supported the segregation without actually stating it. But he hadn't been able to stop the zeitgeist and once Kathleen contracted the illness he was unable to do anything to keep her with him.
The others in the waiting room clutched suitcases and duffel bags, as many of their belongings as they could carry, and watched the large clock by the exit doors. At the end of the hour they would be shuffled onto a Greyhound bus headed for Nox, the city full of the nocturnal.

A narrow, rickety stairwell climbs the seven story tenement building, spilling over with a cacophony of sounds, smells and people.

A single street cuts through the district of Nox. It is lined with towering tenement building with people bursting at its seams. The gated entrance is manned by two guards for the "protection" of the Nocturnals.

The only thing is that you didn't specify whether she's nocturnal or diurnal and what side of the wall she lives on. Other than that, feel free to start posting. :)
