So... what is Dreamscape?

Simply put, the dreamscape is the part of the mind that is responsible for producing dreams, visions and other such hallucinations. If you've ever had a lucid dream, technically the illusory world in which the dream was based would be the dreamscape. It's important to know the Dreamscape because much of the story will take place within the dreamscape of a girl with the ability to re-define reality through dreams, but I'll get to that point shortly.

What is important to know about this roleplay?

The general premise of the roleplay is that a select group of psychic humans have the ability to translate their dreams over into reality, in essence playing God, through the use of a special psychic power known as deja-vu. These people are known as dream weavers(not to be confused with dreamcatchers)

The U.S. government has taken an interest in these individuals and have gone to great lengths toward locating , subduing and "re-educating" them to suit their needs. The only means of controlling said individuals is through the use of special dream psychic agents known as dreamcathers, these agents work in specialized units known as the psi-ops.

Anyway, the straight forth synopsis is about how a team of agents are tasked with invading the dreamscape of a non-co-operative psychologically disturbed 8 year-old girl who seems to reject her conditioning, because of such she's classified as a threat.

Their job is to investigate the source of her trauma eliminate it and make an evaluation as to the fate of the girl.

The roleplay itself can be categorized as semi-realistic, meaning that the backdrop in which the story occurs, takes places in a real world setting, no supernatural powers and what not, however your ordinary character will have the opportunity of crossing into other peoples subconscious minds and entering their dreams known otherwise as the dreamscape.

The character you assume in the dreamscape will be a fictional avatar of your own imagining , because this roleplay takes place in two different universes, you will need to make a real life character and a dream character to be approved.
The dream character can be anime, cartoonish or realistic comic as long as they aren't a real person. Your "dream-self" can be a warlock, a samurai, a vampire, a comic book hero, just about anything you imagine yourself.

The persona the agents assume in the dreamscape will of course have metaphysical powers and abilities. However there is a limit to the the extent in which your character can practice their powers, your powers only affect you because you are not in possession of the dreamscape. The only person who has the ability to warp reality would be the little girl and even her powers have limits.

Types of Dreamcatchers /Proficiencies

There are all types of dreamcatchers with diffferent specialities and developmental paths. I will explore the ones used for this roleplay.

PSI is the ability to manipulate yourself, your surroundings, or others using the power of the mind. PSI itself is divided into three general forms: Burst, Trance and Rise & one newly revealed form, Nova. With each form they are based on the basic rule that before using any PSI you have to make a mental picture.

Burst

Burst, in summation, is the ability to manipulate the world around you. In essence, you channel and manipulate energy or matter in the surrounding environment. Burst has a number of forms it takes, ranging from the ability to move objects with only your mind, the power to command fire or lightning, or even the ability to manifest solid objects. Powerful Burst users are capable of unleashing absolute devastation, destroying or altering the world around them to their will. As if to counteract this, Burst puts a tremendous strain on the user, proportional to the power of their ability. In addition, breaking or even damaging the Burst can lead to a breakdown of the mind or body. Burst users are identified by their red auras.

Trance

Trance, at its most basic, is the ability to manipulate the minds of others. So far, it has been used to read minds, "dive" into memories, and force the target to see illusions. However, the possibilities for Trance go far beyond just what has been displayed so far; for instance, it is theoretically possible to completely control a target. However, there are less dangerous uses of Trance, such as being able to locate the enhanced minds of others using PSI or communicating between two PSI users however unlike Burst waves, Trance thought waves are directly affected by the outside atmosphere and can be blocked by any defense in battles. Trance users are identified by their blue auras.

Rise
Rise is used to manipulate the user. Rise powers can be subdivided into three types: "sense", "strength," and "healing".

  • Sense-type Rise increases the 5 senses of the user (sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch) to extraordinary levels and also increases the user's reflexes.
  • Strength-type Rise focuses on the user's physical body, increasing the body's physical strength, speed, and endurance. It can simply be referred to as Super Human Strength.
  • Healing-type Rise ties into Strength-type but focuses more towards the body's endurance. When trained properly, the user can reduce the amount of damage being taken and how long it will take for their body to recover from damage such as a large cut or bruise. There are types of people that can "share their rise to another person and heal their body instead of their own."
Rise users are identified for their green auras.

Hybrid

It's entirely possible for a dreamcatcher to specialize in up to two differing Psi forms. Rise/Burst Burst/Trance Trance/Rise. They tend to make effective team leaders although not all team leaders are hybrids and otherwise for non-leader types. Hybrids tend to be well balanced across the board and are good at adapting to the situation as their skills call for it, making them good at many things, but weaker in specific more specialized areas. Hybrid users are a little tricky as far as identification purpose, because they can utilize more than one aura.

Nova

This is the style of psi Dreamweavers are known to use. Nova is a PSI limiter removal type of form where the user and their PSI energy merge. Since the users body is more energy than matter, they are known as an existence instead of a person. Nova is the last potential of PSI, as limitless as a human brain's and the universe itself. It is the combination of all aspects of Psi: Burst, Rise, and Trace. Nova energy can be transferred onto other people through touch, but the pain is excruciating because every cell of the body is affected. The only known users of Nova are dreamweavers and they are identified for their golden aura.

Proficiencies

Before a dreamcatcher can be allowed practice their psi on a team , they must first have their skills evaluated by a peer group in the form of an aptitude test, the results of the test determines the placement of psi-op teams , they are issued grades based on their proficiency of psi. Grades range from D, C, B, A, and S. S represents the highest talent, D the lowest. + and - are considered.

Psi Level on the other hand functions as a numerical value that indicates the aggregate level of strength of a psi-user. Character will have the opportunity of increasing their psi-level through either training or battling. (It's basically my take on dragon balls power levels)

Re: DreamScape: Strange Journey

I expressed interest in the other thread but looking here, you mention nightmare Roles. Will you need roleplayers to do these? 'Cause I think I may be more interested in one of those parts. I have a thing for playing psychological warfare, especially from the POV of the antagonist.

Re: DreamScape: Strange Journey

Dramatic entrance, boasting sentence, blah blah blah, I'm going to sign up for this roleplay. I think that sums up what I would usually say.

Re: DreamScape: Strange Journey

That's good! I usually make threads for my roleplays, but if you want you can wait a while and see if you get any more character applications. They usually help out a bit, I've found, as well as keeping the OOC active so it shows up at the top of the forum page.

No, you think I should? I have a character pending for approval. She just needs to fill out the rest of her character sheet and maybe tone down one of her proficiencies by at least a letter grade so she isn't as overpowered.

Re: DreamScape: Strange Journey

Did you make a roleplayer's wanted thread?

Re: DreamScape: Strange Journey

I'm thinking about starting the roleplay sometime saturday if we get enough recruits to fill in some roles until then.

Re: DreamScape: Strange Journey

Okay, thank you! I guess I knew that, I was just confusing myself.

The only question I have is: the psi-powers are only used in the dreams, right? For example, if I were to make a character with the power of trance, would I just be able to invade the minds of people in the dreams? Like, if the characters were in battle with one of the nightmare generals and I used it. Or can psi powers also be used outside the dream on people in real life?

Well, you can dive inside other peoples dreams by astral projection. You just can't do any of the crazy insane stuff you could otherwise do in the dreamscape
