(Hello, lovelies! This is my first roleplay, and I hope you all like it! :D If it seems a bit bare, that is because the story is meant to be mostly character driven. After we get things running for a little while, I will introduce other characters and a deeper, more defined conflict or plot. Thank you!)

For ages come and gone, humankind has pondered the world around them in a way completely unlike any other lifeform seen in nature. When man grew tired of observing that which is natural and inevitable, man aspired to achieve the unnatural. Alchemists, artisans of matter and space, are the few individuals in the world who, throughout history, have sought the most unnatural perfection to be conceived: The Philosopher's Stone. A substance capable of making any element achieve the highest possible perfection. Common metals can become gold, simple water can become an elixir of youth, and humans who consume it can become immortal. There were many, however, who thought such a marvel tampered with God's work. As time wore on and history was recorded, the pursuit for the stone failed, time and time again. In this search, multifarious alchemic discoveries were made and, while the stone has never been created, alchemists have continuously worked wonders and miracles in the world around them. Presently, alchemy is an even rarer science than in older times. Not many actively practice or research it, but those who do are tortured with the same question, the same possibility, that haunted the alchemists of old.

Our story begins in Tokyo, Japan. A modern alchemist,who simply went by Dr. Rine, dedicated his whole life to pursuing the Philosopher's Stone. In his lifelong research, he became one of the most accomplished alchemists of his time. However, he made himself ill with longing for the success of his great work, his magnum opus. He died at 56 years old of tuberculosis. His death came as news to other alchemists around the world, most of which were pursuing the same goal as he. For a reason to each their own, several alchemists traveled to the home of Dr. Rine. Some might have wished to steal his research, others may have thought to buy it from any remaining relatives, if there were any, but many kept their reasons to themselves. Most had thought Dr. Rine to have never married or have children, but unbeknownst to the majority of the alchemist community, he had left one daughter.

Glossary
(Please bear in mind that these terms and definitions are necessarily not the real thing, but modified versions to fit with the lore of the story.)
Alchemy - An influential philosophical tradition whose practitioners have, from antiquity, claimed it to be the precursor to profound powers.
Philosopher's Stone - A legendary alchemical substance with the ability to turn any other substance into it's most perfect form, whether that is from iron to gold, water to a panacea, or a finite lifespan to immortality.
Magnum Opus - Latin for "great work" and the term used to describe the process of making a Philosopher's Stone.
Alchemist - One who practices alchemy. They tend to keep communication with other alchemists to a minimum and conduct most of their work in solitude. Most skills and knowledge are passed down through family.
Homunculus - An alchemically created lifeform that is capable of thoughts and emotions. They can be made to have a wide range of superhuman abilities, and are almost always loyal to their creators.
